Mechanisms leading to ceftazidime/avibactam resistance development during treatment of GES-5-producing infections.

Antimicrob Agents Chemother

November 2024

Servicio de Microbiología and Unidad de Investigación, Hospital Universitario Son Espases, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Illes Balears (IdISBa), CIBERINFEC, Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

The mechanisms underlying ceftazidime/avibactam resistance development in four ceftazidime/avibactam susceptible/resistant pairs of GES-5-producing ST235 clinical isolates were investigated. In three of the cases, ceftazidime/avibactam resistance was driven by a single mutation leading to GES-27 (P162Q), GES-29 (P162A), or the novel GES-60 (N136S), as confirmed through cloning experiments. Moreover, these mutations were associated with increased cefiderocol MICs but reduced carbapenem, particularly imipenem/relebactam, resistance.

Bronchiectasis not due to cystic fibrosis.

Med Clin (Barc)

July 2024

Servicio de Neumología, Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe, Valencia, España; CIBER de Enfermedades Respiratorias. ISCIII, Madrid, España. Electronic address:

Bronchiectasis is a clinical-radiological condition composed of irreversible bronchial dilation due to inflammation and infection of the airways, which causes respiratory symptoms, usually productive cough and infectious exacerbations. Bronchiectasis can have multiple causes, both pulmonary and extrapulmonary, and its clinical presentation is very heterogenous. Its prevalence is unknown, although up to 35-50% of severe COPD and 25% of severe asthma present them, so their underdiagnosis is evident.

During resolution of inflammation, specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs), including resolvins, are produced to restore tissue homeostasis. We hypothesized that there might be a dysregulation of SPMs pathways in pathological vascular remodeling and that resolvin D2 (RvD2) might prevent vascular remodeling and contractile and endothelial dysfunction in a model of obesity and hypertension. In aortic samples of patients with or without abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), we evaluated gene expression of enzymes involved in SPMs synthesis (ALOXs), SPMs receptors and pro-inflammatory genes.
