Front Psychiatry

November 2024

French Society for Biological Psychiatry and Neuropsychopharmacology, STEP Section (Stimulation Transcrânienne En Psychiatrie), Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France.

Over the past three decades, non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques have gained worldwide attention and demonstrated therapeutic potential in various medical fields, particularly psychiatry. The emergence of these novel techniques has led to an increased need for robust training programs to provide practitioners, whether clinicians or scientists, with the necessary skills and knowledge. In response, a comprehensive training curriculum for NIBS in psychiatry has been developed in France.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims at reporting the current evidence of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on grief in children.

Recent Findings: Evidence from the scientific literature shows that the severity of grief in children is impacted by numerous risk factors which can lead to prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Among these risk factors are the unpredictability of the death, the lack of understanding about what is happening by the child, the global insecurity raised by the context of the pandemic or again the impossibility for the child to find comfort with his peers due to the lock-down.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research indicates that individuals with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) experience significant cognitive impairments, but the progression of these impairments based on treatment response has been understudied.
  • The study analyzed 131 TRD patients over a year to compare cognitive performance changes in those who responded to treatment versus those who did not.
  • Findings showed persistent cognitive impairments in both groups, but responders exhibited more significant improvements, suggesting the need for cognitive remediation to enhance their daily functioning post-treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and severe disorder characterized by unstability of self-image, unstable affect, and unstable interpersonal relationships. Women with BPD would give birth as much as other women, but according to several studies, BPD mothers have a reduced sensitivity to their babies and a poor interpretation of their emotions; this would interfere in mother-baby interaction and in psycho-affective development of the baby, with the risk to develop psychiatric pathologies in adulthood. In this context several professionals have developed different interventions for mothers suffering from BPD.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a disabling psychiatric condition characterized by the failure of two antidepressants (ADs). Since the occurrence of side effects (SEs) appears to be one of the main determinants of early discontinuation of pharmacological treatments contributing to a pseudo-resistance, the purpose of this study was to determine the parameters associated with the occurrence of SEs under ADs in a cohort of patients with TRD. An observational, cross-sectional, multicentre study was carried out using data from the French network of Expert Centers for TRD.

June 2022

Pôle hospitalo-universitaire de psychiatrie d'adultes du Grand Nancy, Centre psychothérapique de Nancy, 54520 Laxou, France; Département de neurologie, CHU de Nancy, 54000 Nancy, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Anticholinergic properties are key in managing mental health conditions but can lead to adverse effects, including cognitive deficits and physical symptoms like dry mouth and constipation.
  • Anticholinergic drugs, often mistakenly categorized, mainly act as antagonists to the parasympathetic nervous system; particularly common in certain antipsychotics and tricyclic antidepressants.
  • Various anticholinergic burden scales have emerged to assess side effects, with three main scales (ADS, ARS, ACB) widely used in clinical practice, highlighting the need for awareness of these effects in treatment, especially in elderly patients and those on multiple medications.

Although clinical pharmacy is a discipline that emerged in the 1960s, the question of precisely how pharmacists can play a role in therapeutic optimization remains unanswered. In the field of mental health, psychiatric pharmacists are increasingly involved in medication reconciliation and therapeutic patient education (or psychoeducation) to improve medication management and enhance medication adherence, respectively. However, psychiatric pharmacists must now assume a growing role in team-based models of care and engage in shared expertise in psychopharmacology in order to truly invest in therapeutic optimization of psychotropics.
