Background: While protein therapeutics are invaluable in managing numerous diseases, many require frequent injections to maintain therapeutically effective concentrations, due to their short half-life in circulation. PolyXen™, a platform and patented technology employing biodegradable, non-immunogenic and hydrophilic Polysialic Acids (PSA) for drug delivery, is being utilized to overcome such limitations, thereby potentially enabling the clinical utility of a broad range of protein therapeutics. Here, we report the recent progress on two development candidates, polysialylated deoxyribonuclease I (PSA-DNase) and polysialylated erythropoietin (PSA-EPO).

Background: Yellow fever (YF) is still a major public health problem in endemic regions of Africa and South America. In Africa, one of the main control strategies is routine vaccination within the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). A new meningococcal A conjugate vaccine (PsA-TT) is about to be introduced in the EPI of countries in the African meningitis belt, and this study reports on the immunogenicity of the YF-17D vaccines in infants when administered concomitantly with measles vaccine and PsA-TT.

In countries where Hib vaccination is not applied routinely, due to limited availability and high cost of the vaccines, invasive Hib disease is still a cause of mortality. Through the development of a production process for a Hib conjugate vaccine and related quality control tests and the transfer of this technology to emerging vaccine manufacturers in developing countries, a substantial contribution was made to the availability and affordability of Hib conjugate vaccines in these countries.

Our survey in 696 children aged ⩽2 years in rural West Bengal detected rotavirus as sole pathogen in 8% (17/199) of diarrhoeic stool specimens. Other organisms were detected along with rotavirus in 11% of faecal specimens.

Vaccines represent one of the greatest achievements of science and medicine in the fight against infectious diseases. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective public health tools to prevent infectious diseases. Significant progress has been made in expanding the coverage of vaccines globally, resulting in the prevention of more than two million deaths annually.

Live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs) targeting seasonal influenza are produced in embryonated eggs and formulated as a trivalent preparation of three live attenuated vaccine strains, one A(H1N1) strain, one A(H3N2) strain and one type B strain. In this study, we describe an egg-based potency assay for estimating the 50% Egg infectious dose (EID50) of individual strains in the trivalent preparation by selective neutralisation of two strains and then estimating the infective titres of the non-neutralised strain. The test is highly specific, and no cross interference of heterologous antisera is observed in the estimation of individual titres.

In the event of a highly pathogenic influenza pandemic, the Indian subcontinent would need 1.2 billion doses of vaccine to immunize its entire population, double if two doses were required to assure immunity. Serum Institute of India Limited (SII) thus became one of six initial grantees of the World Health Organization (WHO) technology transfer initiative to create capacity in developing countries to manufacture H5N1 pandemic influenza vaccine.

The Network's main strategic priority (increase access to DPT-based combination vaccines containing vaccines against Hepatitis B (HepB) and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)) has now come close to fulfillment due in part to the transfer of conjugation technology from The Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI) to various manufacturers of the Network. It is argued that at the international level more push mechanisms for product development involving DCVM are needed, including those promoting access to technology and transfer of technology, know how and technical skills from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries to developing countries.
