Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of several infectious diseases in humans and fish. This study was conducted to compare human and fish-derived GBS in terms of their antimicrobial susceptibility, serotype, virulence and pili genes and sequence type (ST), and to determine whether there is a potential linkage of zoonotic transmission in Malaysia. GBS isolated from humans and fish had similar phenotypic characteristics and differed in virulence gene profile, antimicrobial susceptibility, serotype and sequence type.

Sports-related shoulder dislocations: a state-hospital experience.

This retrospective study was conducted in a state hospital set-up and aimed at identifying the incidence of sports-related shoulder dislocations and their characteristics and the sports events involved. All patients with shoulder dislocation related to sporting activities admitted to the hospital from January 1999 to December 2002 were included in the study. There were 18 sports-related shoulder dislocations out of 106 all shoulder dislocations admitted during this 4-year period.

Unicameral bone cyst of the calcaneum.

The calcaneus is not a common site for a unicameral solitary bone cyst. Little is known about the etiology and natural history of these lesions. The author reports an adult man with a solitary bone cyst of the os calcis which was confirmed radiologically and histologically and successfully treated with curretage and bone grafting.

A retrospective follow-through study confined to users of government health services in Peninsular Malaysia was carried out in 1997.

To establish a profile of fractures related to sporting activities, to determine the extent to which these injuries resulted in morbidity, and to find suitable target areas for injury prevention, a one-year study was undertaken at Seremban Hospital, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, from July 15, 1998 to July 14, 1999. All patients presenting to the Department of Orthopaedic & Traumatology with fractures sustained during sporting activities were enrolled. Fractures related to sporting activities are increasing and an entity to be recognized despite the good function outcome of the treatment.

Sudden maternal deaths in Malaysia: a case report.

We report on a retrospective study of maternal deaths in Malaysia that occurred within 24 hours of delivery, abortion or operative termination of the pregnancy (defined as sudden deaths) in the years 1995-1996. There were 131 sudden maternal deaths (20.6% of all maternal deaths); postpartum hemorrhage, obstetric embolisms, trauma and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy were the main causes.

Background: An outbreak of viral encephalitis occurred among pig industry workers in Malaysia in September 1998 to April 1999. The encephalitis was attributed to a new paramyxovirus, Nipah virus. The Confidential Enquiries Into Maternal Deaths in Malaysia showed that there were 23 maternal deaths attributed to liver disease between 1991-1994. Objectives: The purposes of this study were to compare the efficacy of sublingual nifedipine with intravenous hydrallazine in the control of acute hypertension of pregnancy and to make a preliminary assessment whether sublingual nifedipine could be recommended for use by midwives faced with severe hypertension in pregnancy in a rural setting.

Methods: Subjects were 200 consecutive patients admitted to Kuala Tereng-ganu General Hospital, Malaysia with severe hypertension in pregnancy between August 1989 and June 1990. Admission criteria were an ongoing viable pregnancy more than 28 weeks and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) more than 120 mmHg.
