Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of acute hepatitis E infection in humans. Two epidemiological patterns of the disease exist-endemic and sporadic. Genotypes 1 (HEV-1) and 2 (HEV-2) are transmitted through contaminated water and are responsible for the outbreaks of many large-scale epidemics in developing countries of Asia and Africa.

Background: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma represents 3-10% of all pediatric renal tumors. With the advancement of ultrasound diagnostics and magnetic resonance imaging, the diagnosis of this renal neoplasm is increasingly being established prenatally and at birth. It usually presents as a benign tumor, but it can severely affect pregnancy outcomes, contributing to perinatal morbidity and mortality.

The selection of an optimal referencing method in event-related potential (ERP) research has been a long-standing debate, as it can significantly influence results and lead to data misinterpretation. Such misinterpretation can produce flawed scientific conclusions, like the inaccurate localization of neural processes, and in practical applications, such as using ERPs as biomarkers in medicine, it may result in incorrect diagnoses or ineffective treatments. In line with the development and advancement of good scientific practice (GSP) in ERP research, this study sought to address several questions regarding the most suitable digital reference for investigating the N400 ERP component.

Thermal Characteristics and Kinetics of the Thermal Degradation of Sugar Beet Waste Leaves and Pulp in Relation to Chemical Composition.

Foods

January 2025

Department of Food Engineering, Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, Pierotti Street 6, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.

Thermal characteristics of dried sugar beet pulp, leaves and leaf fractions obtained after extraction: fibrous leaf pulp and fibre rich leaf fraction, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. The sugar beet samples showed a similar thermal behaviour associated with a similar composition. Two endotherms are found on the differential scanning calorimetry curves.

Fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides as well as polyols (FODMAPs) came into focus following recent clinical studies confirming that they worsen the symptoms of several gastrointestinal disorders suffered by 40% of the general population. Currently; only the low-FODMAP diet is a valuable strategy to help relieve IBS symptoms; however; it is only a temporary solution due to the nutritional deficiency caused by avoiding high-FODMAP foods. At the same time; bakery products are an important part of the human diet worldwide and the key contributors to the high intake of FODMAPs; especially in their wholegrain form.

A rapid and efficient ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) procedure followed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the determination of 14 rare earth elements (REEs) (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu), along with yttrium (Y) and scandium (Sc), in coffee samples. The method was validated using certified reference material (NIST SRM 1547), recovery tests at four fortification levels, and comparisons with microwave-assisted digestion (MAD). Excellent accuracy and precision were achieved, with recovery rates ranging from 80.

Viruses that infect cyanobacteria are an integral part of aquatic food webs, influencing nutrient cycling and ecosystem health. However, the significance of virus host range, replication efficiency, and host compatibility on cyanobacterial dynamics, growth, and toxicity remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the effects of cyanophage additions on the dynamics and activity of optimal, sub-optimal, and non-permissive cyanobacterial hosts in cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa and Raphidiopsis raciborskii.

Ectopic calcifications occur in tendons, ligaments, entheses, muscles, and fasciae, and are often associated with pain and inflammation. In clinical settings, these calcifications are commonly treated by physical therapy and/or surgical interventions. However, there is not enough understanding of pharmacological treatments as primary cures, supportive therapy to physical or surgical treatment, or even preventive measures to avoid or diminish the development of ectopic calcifications.

Magnesium-based materials, which are known for their light weight and exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, hold immense promise in the biomedical, automotive, aerospace, and military sectors. However, their inherent limitations, including low wear resistance and poor mechanical properties, have driven the development of magnesium-based metal matrix composites (Mg-MMCs). The pivotal role of powder metallurgy (PM) in fabricating Mg-MMCs was explored, enhancing their mechanical and corrosion resistance characteristics.

Inertial Memory Effects in Molecular Transport Across Nanoporous Membranes.

Membranes (Basel)

January 2025

Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences-National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, Mike Petrovica Alasa 12-14, P.O. Box 522, 11001 Belgrade, Serbia.

Nanoporous membranes are heterogeneous structures, with heterogeneity manifesting at the microscale. In examining particle transport through such media, it has been observed that this transport deviates from classical diffusion, as described by Fick's second law. Moreover, the classical model is physically unsustainable, as it is non-causal and predicts an infinite speed of concentration perturbation propagation through a substantial medium.

Background/objectives: A significant breakthrough in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment has occurred with the introduction of targeted therapies and immunotherapy. However, not all patients treated with these therapies would respond to treatment, and patients who respond to treatment would acquire resistance at some time point. This is why we need new biomarkers that can predict response to therapy.
