Background/aims: The incidence of steatotic liver disease (SLD) is increasing across all age groups as the incidence of obesity increases worldwide. The existing noninvasive prediction models for SLD require laboratory tests or imaging and perform poorly in the early diagnosis of infrequently screened populations such as young adults and individuals with healthcare disparities. We developed a machine learning-based point-of-care prediction model for SLD that is readily available to the broader population with the aim of facilitating early detection and timely intervention and ultimately reducing the burden of SLD.

Obesity and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

J Obes Metab Syndr

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System Gangnam Center, Seoul, Korea.

The core pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome involves an overproduction of androgens primarily originating from ovarian thecal cells. Two major external triggers promote androgen overproduction in the ovaries: the increased secretion of luteinizing hormone, a consequence of aberrant hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion dynamics, and compensatory hyperinsulinemia resulting from insulin resistance. Obesity interacts with polycystic ovary syndrome in multiple ways, but a major role of obesity in its pathophysiology is the exacerbation of insulin resistance.

A longer cecal intubation time (CIT) occurs during colonoscopy under difficult insertion conditions, which may hinder meticulous mucosal observation. However, whether a longer CIT has detrimental effects on the detection of adenomas remains unclear. We evaluated the effects of CIT on the detection and miss rates of colorectal neoplasms in asymptomatic participants.

Toll-like receptor 3 signaling attenuated colitis-associated cancer development in mice.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine and Liver Research Institute, Seoul National University College of Medicine, 101 Daehak-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, 03080, Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease may lead to a heightened risk of colitis-associated cancer (CAC), which this study investigates using mouse models.
  • TLR3 was examined for its role in CAC, showing that TLR3 knockout mice had more severe colitis and a higher tumor burden compared to wild-type mice.
  • The study concluded that enhancing TLR3 signaling could potentially serve as a therapeutic strategy to mitigate the development of CAC in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Backgruound: The increasing rate of excess body weight (EBW) in the global population has led to growing health concerns, including cancer-related EBW. We aimed to estimate the population attributable fraction (PAF) of cancer incidence and deaths linked to EBW in Korean individuals from 2015 to 2030 and to compare its value with various body mass index cutoffs.

Methods: Levin's formula was used to calculate the PAF; the prevalence rates were computed using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, while the relative risks of specific cancers related to EBW were estimated based on the results of Korean cohort studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers examined how genetic risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) interacts with air pollution exposure to influence CVD outcomes.
  • Using data from the UK Biobank involving over 249,000 participants, they found that individuals with high genetic risk who were also exposed to high levels of particulate matter (PM) faced significantly increased risks of cardiovascular death.
  • The study suggests that reducing PM exposure and tailoring preventive strategies for those at high genetic risk could improve cardiovascular health outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Antibiotic usage in early life may influence the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with a specific focus on ulcerative colitis among South Korean infants.
  • A study involving nearly 3 million infants found that most (87%) used antibiotics within their first year, and this usage was associated with a decreased risk of ulcerative colitis, especially when exposure occurred earlier.
  • The findings suggest that specific antibiotics, particularly penicillin, could potentially play a protective role against IBD, with the results remaining consistent after factoring in dietary influences.
