Introduction: Older adults are a heterogeneous group, and their care experience preferences are likely to be diverse and individualized. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify categories of older adults' care experience preferences and to examine similarities and differences across different age groups.

Methods: The initial categories of older adults' care experience preferences were identified through a qualitative review of narrative text (n = 3134) in the ADVault data set.

Article Synopsis
  • Multimorbidity negatively impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL), particularly in patients with hypertension, but the exact reasons for this effect were not well understood.
  • This study explored how depressive symptoms and treatment burden act as mediators between the number of diseases a patient has and their HRQoL, analyzing differences between younger (<60 years) and older (60+) age groups.
  • Results indicated that while there is a direct link between disease burden and HRQoL, depressive symptoms play a larger mediating role than treatment burden in older patients, highlighting the need for age-specific interventions that address both factors.

Background: Although a child- and family-centred care (CFCC) philosophy has been emphasized and adopted for decades in paediatric critical care settings in several countries, numerous issues from parents' perspectives regarding the philosophy remain unresolved. To facilitate the full translation of CFCC into clinical practice, health care professionals need an in-depth understanding of family experiences. Real-life mothering experiences, including maternal roles and identities, remain largely unknown at paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in the Republic of Korea, where family visitation, presence, and participation are restricted.

Article Synopsis
  • - This review examined the effectiveness and quality of studies on infant sleep interventions using actigraphy, a method for objectively tracking sleep patterns in infants in real-life settings.
  • - It analyzed eleven studies, revealing that while most interventions improved sleep outcomes for both infants and parents, the benefits to parents were less consistent; only two studies showed low risk of bias.
  • - The findings highlight the need for better methodological standards and reporting in future research to enhance the assessment of infant sleep through actigraphy.

Developing reliable biomarkers is important for screening Alzheimer's disease (AD) and monitoring its progression. Although EEG is non-invasive direct measurement of brain neural activity and has potentials for various neurologic disorders, vulnerability to noise, difficulty in clinical interpretation and quantification of signal information have limited its clinical application. There have been many research about machine learning (ML) adoption with EEG, but the accuracy of detecting AD is not so high or not validated with Aβ PET scan.

Background: Since 2014, Korea has been operating the National Emergency Medical Situation Room (NEMSR) to provide regional emergency departments (EDs) with coordination services for the interhospital transfer of critically ill patients. The present study aimed to describe the NEMSR's experience and interhospital transfer pattern from EDs nationwide, and investigate the factors related to delayed transfers or transfers that could not be arranged by the NEMSR.

Methods: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of the NEMSR's coordination registry from 2017 to 2019.

January 2023

Research Institute of Nursing Science, Center for Human-Caring Nurse Leaders for the Future by Brain Korea 21 (BK 21) Four Project, Seoul National University College of Nursing, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: Although antihypertensive drug therapy is commonly believed to be a life-long therapy, several recent guidelines have suggested that antihypertensive medications can be gradually reduced or discontinued for some patients whose blood pressure (BP) is well-controlled for an extended period. Thus, this pilot study aimed to describe the success rate of antihypertensive drug discontinuation over 6 months among young and middle-aged patients with hypertension.

Methods: This was a prospective, single-group, intervention study.

Article Synopsis
  • This review compiles various developmental screening tests used globally and estimates their diagnostic accuracy in identifying developmental issues among children under 13.
  • Following strict methodological guidelines, the study analyzed 56 research articles to assess the effectiveness of 17 common screening tests, such as ASQ and DDST, revealing a pooled sensitivity of 0.75 and specificity of 0.76.
  • The findings suggest that children's existing developmental concerns significantly affect screening accuracy, emphasizing the need for standardized validation processes to improve the effectiveness of these tests in clinical use.

The use of positron emission tomography (PET) as the initial or sole biomarker of β-amyloid (Aβ) brain pathology may inhibit Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug development and clinical use due to cost, access, and tolerability. We developed a qEEG-ML algorithm to predict Aβ pathology among subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients, and validated it using Aβ PET. We compared QEEG data between patients with MCI and those with SCD with and without PET-confirmed beta-amyloid plaque.

Objective: Wound infection is prevalent in home healthcare (HHC) and often leads to hospitalizations. However, none of the previous studies of wounds in HHC have used data from clinical notes. Therefore, the authors created a more accurate description of a patient's condition by extracting risk factors from clinical notes to build predictive models to identify a patient's risk of wound infection in HHC.
