Objective: Exercise has been shown to be an effective intervention; the difficulty still lies in providing exercise programs to the older adults in rural areas. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week exercise program provided with visual guidelines (prerecorded video) on frailty among older adults in rural areas.
Methods: Fifty participants (71.

The socioeconomic burden of alcohol-related liver disease has been increasing worldwide. Its prevalence is underestimated, and patients with alcohol-related liver disease are rarely diagnosed in the earlier phase of the disease spectrum. Alcoholic hepatitis is a distinct syndrome with life-threatening signs of systemic inflammation.

Background And Aims: Sarcopaenia is associated with advanced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the impact of the muscle mass categorised by muscle quality on fibrosis progression remains unclear.
Methods: A total of 292 patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD who underwent serial vibration-controlled transient elastography assessments at least 1 year from baseline were selected.

Chemicals have been identified as a potential risk factor of renal dysfunction. However, studies that consider both multiple chemicals and non-chemical risk factors, such as hypertension, are rare. In this study, we assessed the associations between exposure to several chemicals, including major metals, phthalates, and phenolic compounds, and the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR).

Background: Structural alterations of the penis, including cavernosal apoptosis and fibrosis, induce venous leakage into the corpus cavernosum or cavernosal veno-occlusive dysfunction, a key pathophysiology associated with erectile dysfunction after radical prostatectomy. We hypothesized that the effect of JNK inhibitors on reducing apoptosis and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) on inducing tissue regeneration could be another treatment mechanism of erectile dysfunction after radical prostatectomy.
Aim: To investigate whether JNK inhibition combined with intracavernosal administration of HGF can completely preserve cavernosal veno-occlusive function (CVOF) in a rat model of erectile dysfunction induced via bilateral cavernosal nerve crush injury (CNCI).

Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNA) in small extracellular vesicles (sEV) such as exosomes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although circulating cell-free miRNA have been extensively investigated in ALS, sEV-derived miRNAs have not been systemically explored yet. Here, we performed small RNA sequencing analysis of serum sEV and identified 5 differentially expressed miRNA in a discovery cohort of 12 patients and 11 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (fold change > 2, p < 0.

Noninvasive risk stratification is a challenging issue in the management of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study aimed to identify multiomics-based predictors of NAFLD progression, as assessed by changes in serial FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase (FAST) scores during lifestyle modification. A total of 266 patients with available metabolomics and genotyping data were included.

Background: The relationship between diet and risk genotypes in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) development and fibrosis progression in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear.
Objective: We aimed to investigate the effects of diet on NASH development and fibrosis progression in patients with NAFLD stratified by the PNPLA3 genotype.
Methods: We performed a prospective study in a cohort of patients with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD.

The multimodal activities of farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonists make this class an attractive option to treat nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The safety and efficacy of tropifexor, an FXR agonist, in a randomized, multicenter, double-blind, three-part adaptive design, phase 2 study, in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis were therefore assessed. In Parts A + B, 198 patients were randomized to receive tropifexor (10-90 μg) or placebo for 12 weeks.

Preoperative diagnosis of borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) is of increasing concern. This study aimed to determine computed tomography (CT) features in differentiating stage 1 BOTs from stage I malignant epithelial ovarian tumors (MEOTs). A total of 170 ovarian masses (97 BOTs and 73 MEOTs) from 141 consecutive patients who underwent preoperative CT imaging were retrospectively analyzed.

Introduction: Low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) for osteoarthritis (OA) has been performed for several decades. However, supporting evidence from randomised studies using modern methodologies is lacking, and a recently published randomised study failed to show the significant benefit of LDRT. The presented trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of LDRT for patients with knee OA.

Chronic alcohol consumption often induces hepatic steatosis but rarely causes severe inflammation in Kupffer cells (KCs) despite the increased hepatic influx of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), suggesting the presence of a veiled tolerance mechanism. In addition to LPS, the liver is affected by several gut-derived neurotransmitters through the portal blood, but the effects of catecholamines on KCs have not been clearly explored in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Hence, we investigated the regulatory roles of catecholamine on inflammatory KCs under chronic alcohol exposure.

Background: Evidence of endoscopic papillectomy (EP) for ampullar adenoma with high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or adenocarcinoma is insufficient. Here we investigated the long-term outcomes of the advanced ampullary tumors treated by EP with careful surveillance comparing to subsequent surgery after EP.
Methods: Patients treated with EP for ampullary adenoma with HGD or adenocarcinoma from the multi-center retrospective Korean cohort of ampulla of Vater tumor were categorized into EP alone versus EP with subsequent surgery groups.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sarcopenia share insulin resistance as a common pathophysiology and have overlapping clinical manifestation of metabolic derangement; hence, it is difficult to differentiate the independent effect of sarcopenia on the development of NAFLD from concomitant metabolic disorders. Using a community-based prospective cohort study, the contributions of low muscle mass and genetic risk factors to the development of NAFLD and NAFLD-related hepatic fibrosis were investigated in the Korean population.
Methods: This prospective community-based cohort study included 40-70-year-old adults, followed up biennially from 2001-2002 to 2017-2018.

Patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) may have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have dealt with the association between AP and the risk of CVD in diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the risk of CVD and mortality in patients with diabetes and AP history by analyzing a large-scale national claims database in Korea.

Background/aims: Novel agents acting against hepatitis B virus (HBV) are needed to improve HBsAg seroclearance or termed as 'functional cure'. Inarigivir (retinoic acid-inducible gene I agonist) has immunomodulatory and direct antiviral actions against HBV. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of Inarigivir for the treatment of HBV infection.
