Izuforant is a selective, and potent histamine H4 receptor (H4R) antagonist developed to treat atopic dermatitis (AD). There is an unmet medical need for therapeutic agents to control inflammation and pruritus. Izuforant is a strong candidate for this task based on the findings of non-clinical studies showing that inhibition of the histamine-mediated signaling pathway via H4R by izuforant results in decreased pruritus and inflammation.

Background: Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the gold standard for diagnosing sarcopenia. However, comparative studies using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) would be required in the Korean population. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between total-body bone density measuring devices (Hologic and GE Lunar) and a bioelectrical impedance measurement device (InBody 970) as well as the correlation between upper body muscle mass.

Background: Hip fractures are a common and debilitating condition, particularly among older adults. Loss of muscle mass and strength is a common consequence of hip fractures, which further contribute to functional decline and increased disability. Assessing changes in individual thigh muscles volume in follow-up patients can provide valuable insights into the quantitative recovery process and guide rehabilitation interventions.

Presoaking hamstring autograft with vancomycin does not jeopardize its biomechanical properties, including graft elongation, after cyclic loading.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

August 2024

Department of Anatomy, Catholic Institute for Applied Anatomy, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Purpose: Presoaking the graft with vancomycin before implantation has been shown to reduce the risk of postoperative infection after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, the effects of presoaking on the graft biomechanical properties remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether presoaking the graft with vancomycin affects the graft biomechanical properties and length after cyclic loading.

Article Synopsis
  • * Sixty adults with MASLD were divided into two groups: one used the mobile app for interventions, while the other received standard educational materials, with liver enzyme levels assessed before and after 4 weeks.
  • * Results showed significant decreases in liver enzymes (alanine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transferase) in the intervention group, suggesting that mobile lifestyle interventions could help improve liver health without impacting body weight or waist circumference, though more extensive studies are needed for confirmation.

The study aims to develop a deep learning based automatic segmentation approach using the UNETR(U-net Transformer) architecture to quantify the volume of individual thigh muscles(27 muscles in 5 groups) for Sarcopenia assessment. By automating the segmentation process, this approach improves the efficiency and accuracy of muscle volume calculation, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of muscle composition and its relationship to Sarcopenia. The study utilized a dataset of 72 whole thigh CT scans from hip fracture patients, annotated by two radiologists.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated bone turnover markers (BTMs) - CTX, P1NP, and osteocalcin - in Korean patients with osteoporosis through a multicenter clinical analysis.
  • It focused on pre- and post-menopausal women and men, collecting demographic data and measuring BTM levels, while excluding patients without sufficient test results.
  • Results showed significant BTM levels in both genders, with teriparatide increasing P1NP and denosumab decreasing CTX, providing valuable data for future bone health assessments in Koreans.

Position Statement: Postmenopausal Osteoporosis Treatment Strategies in Korea.

J Bone Metab

November 2023

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, Kyung Hee University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Classifying patients with osteoporosis according to fracture risk and establishing adequate treatment strategies is crucial to effectively treat osteoporosis. The Korean Society for Bone and Mineral Research has issued a position statement regarding appropriate treatment strategies for postmenopausal osteoporosis. According to previous fragility fracture history, bone mineral density (BMD) test results, fracture risk assessment tool, and several clinical risk factors, fracture risk groups are classified into low, moderate, high, and very-high-risk groups.

As the aging population increases, the number of patients with osteoporosis is gradually rising. Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and the microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, resulting in reduced bone strength and an increased risk of low-energy or fragility fractures. Thus, the use of anti-resorptive agents, such as bisphosphonates (BPs), to prevent osteoporotic fractures is growing annually.

Background: This prospective randomized controlled study aimed to determine the effects of abdominal massage on constipation management in elderly patients with hip fractures.

Methods: From August 2017 to December 2018, patients aged above 65 years with hip fractures (n = 88) were randomly assigned to a massage group that received a bowel massage (n = 48) or a control group that did not receive a bowel massage (n = 40). Patients in the bowel massage group received a bowel massage from a trained caregiver after breakfast at approximately 9:00 AM for an hour.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies indicated that gastric cancer survivors face a higher risk of osteoporotic fractures, but the impact of different surgery types wasn't thoroughly analyzed.
  • This study analyzed data from 85,124 gastric cancer survivors and categorized them by surgical type—total gastrectomy (TG), subtotal gastrectomy (SG), and endoscopic procedures (ESD/EMR)—to compare fracture incidence.
  • The findings revealed that TG significantly increases the risk of osteoporotic fractures compared to SG and ESD/EMR, suggesting that the extent of gastric removal and its metabolic effects contribute to this increased risk.
