Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated how motor-innervated free flaps impact tongue mobility in patients who had hemi-tongue reconstructions, using cine-MRI images for evaluation.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 47 patients who had undergone tongue reconstruction and 10 control subjects, comparing those with motor innervation to those without.
  • - Results showed that patients with motor innervation had better swallowing functionality and tongue mobility, especially during the pharyngeal phase after tongue base resection.

Using traditional measures to assess mandibular stability after the surgery-first approach (SFA) may produce inaccurate results because unlike the conventional orthodontic-first approach (OFA), the main dental movements occur after surgery in SFA, which produce unavoidable mandibular movements, especially in cases with postsurgical premature dental contact. As these movements are part of the surgical-orthodontic plan, they should not be considered an actual relapse. In this study, to avoid postsurgical dental movement effects, the authors used the relationship between proximal and distal mandibular segments to evaluate stability after SFA.

In this study, the authors introduced a dual application of patient-specific occlusion-based positioning guide and fibular cutting guide to obtain ideal occlusal relationship and mandibular contour in patients undergoing mandibular reconstruction. A retrospective review was performed in 21 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with a fibular osteocutaneous free flap. Using computed tomography and intraoral scanning data, fibular cutting guide and occlusion-based positioning guide were simulated in a modeling software and 3-dimensionally printed.

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Seoul Asan Medical Center, College of Medicine, University of Ulsan, Seoul, Korea.

In this study, the authors report the experience of extended superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) face-lift with the vertical vector in Asian ethnicity and investigate the 3-dimensional change of facial contour. A total of 32 patients with Korean ethnicity underwent extended SMAS face-lift with vertical vector from 2015 to 2018. Patients with aging face were included for the study subjects, whereas those who were diagnosed with any craniofacial deformity were excluded.

The aim of this study was to present a new case of congenital Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, a rare anomaly of the female reproductive tract, and review the related literature. A 12-year-old girl presented with severe dysmenorrhea since menarche and magnetic resonance imaging showing a bicornuate uterus, double cervix, right hematometra, and hematosalpinx with ipsilateral renal agenesis, accompanied by a remnant distal ureter with hydroureter. A diagnostic cystoscopy and a reduced-port robot-assisted laparoscopy with chromopertubation were performed in order to identify the anomaly.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the surgery-first approach with the traditional orthodontic-first approach for treating facial asymmetry in patients who underwent orthognathic surgery.
  • Both approaches resulted in similar levels of asymmetry correction and skeletal stability, with comparable relapse ratios for various maxilla and mandibular measurements.
  • Notably, the surgery-first approach led to a significantly shorter treatment duration (18.5 months) compared to the orthodontic-first approach (22.9 months), indicating potential efficiency advantages of the newer method.

Dynamic Hemitongue Defect Reconstruction With Functional Gracilis Muscle Free Transfer.

Ann Plast Surg

March 2021

From the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University of Ulsan, College of Medicine, Seoul Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea.

Background: Because the tongue consists of 26 intrinsic and extrinsic muscles, even hemiglossectomy, which preserves some of the tongue and its muscles, leads to functional morbidity in speech and swallowing. Subsequent reconstruction using a conventional fasciocutaneous flap results in limited functional recovery. This study compared the functional recovery of patients who underwent hemiglossectomy based on the fasciocutaneous free flap with or without dynamic gracilis muscle flap reconstruction.

Histological Review of Demineralized Dentin Matrix as a Carrier of rhBMP-2.

Tissue Eng Part B Rev

June 2020

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry and Institute of Oral Bioscience, Research Institute of Clinical Medicine of Chonbuk National University, Jeonju, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2007, rhBMP-2 was approved to augment bone tissue in dental procedures, but high doses and poor retention in carriers like collagen sponges can lead to side effects.
  • Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM), which has been used alongside rhBMP-2 since 1998, shows promise as a better carrier, offering sustained release and supporting bone growth over 30 days.
  • This review examines the histological results of using DDM with rhBMP-2, aiming to emphasize its effectiveness and biological benefits in dental implant applications.
