It has been postulated that being breastfed in infancy affects not only health status in childhood but also disease risk in adulthood. To investigate the association of being breastfed with the risks of adult colorectal cancer and benign tumor, we conducted a case-control study including 1190 colorectal cancer and 1585 benign tumor cases and 5301 controls, admitted to a single hospital in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, between 1997 and 2013. History of having been breastfed was assessed using a self-administered questionnaire, and odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using unconditional logistic regression.

Objectives: Clinical guidelines recommend that patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) should be treated with appropriate adjuvant therapy. However, compliance with guideline recommendations is insufficient, and this may lead to unfavorable outcomes. We aimed to investigate the level of adherence to guideline recommendations in patients with NMIBC and evaluate the outcomes of those who did and did not receive guideline-recommended therapies.

The benign tumor uterine leiomyoma (UL) develops from the smooth muscle tissue that constitutes the uterus, whereas malignant tumor uterine sarcoma develops from either the smooth muscle tissue or stroma and is different from UL and endometrial cancer. Uterine sarcoma is broadly classified into three types: uterine leiomyosarcoma, endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS), and carcinosarcoma. Although uterine leiomyosarcoma and ESS are both classified as uterine sarcoma, they significantly differ in terms of their sites of occurrence, symptoms, and treatment methods.

Background: The difference between Young's moduli of the femur and the stem causes stress shielding (SS). TiNbSn (TNS) stem has a low Young's modulus and strength with gradient functional properties during the change in elastic modulus with heat treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of TNS stems on SS and their clinical outcomes compared to conventional stems.

Background And Aim: The usefulness of fecal calprotectin (FC) and serum leucine-rich alpha-2 glycoprotein (LRG) assessing the activity of Crohn's disease (CD) remains to be fully demonstrated in Asia. The present study aimed to elucidate whether FC and LRG could predict endoscopic remission (ER) in Japanese patients with CD.
Methods: Between October 2018 and July 2021, we prospectively observed treatment courses of CD patients treated with biologic agents.

Symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (sPDA) is common among preterm infants, and can lead to several complications. This is particularly true for extremely preterm infants, as closure of the ductus arteriosus using cyclooxygenase inhibitors is often difficult. A recent study using a preterm sheep model showed that intimal thickening-required for anatomical closure of the ductus arteriosus-is less developed in twins than in singletons.

Histological classification and cytology reporting format described in General Rules for the Description of Thyroid Cancer, the 8 edition (2019) (the Japanese General Rules) were briefly introduced. Moreover, the differences between "the Japanese General Rules", and WHO Histological Classification, the 4 edition (2017) and The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology, the 2 edition (2018) were also explained. The Japanese General Rules did not accept the borderline lesions of thyroid tumor which were newly shown in WHO Histological Classification.

A 46-year-old woman consulted our hospital with diffuse alopecia and blood eosinophilia. Histological examination of the scalp revealed dense eosinophilic infiltration around the hair follicles and in the surrounding subcutis. Oral corticosteroid was effective to reduce hair loss and blood eosinophilia, but these conditions immediately relapsed after ending treatment.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome is a disorder of respiratory control caused by mutations in the paired-like homeobox 2B gene. Mutations in the paired-like homeobox 2B gene are also responsible for Hirschsprung's disease. Variant Hirschsprung's disease is a rarer disorder that does not meet the diagnostic criteria of Hirschsprung's disease, although severe functional bowel obstruction persists.

Background: Although several complications capable of causing pouch failure may develop after restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) for ulcerative colitis (UC), the incidences and causes are conflicting and vary according to country, race and institution. To avoid pouch failure, this study aimed to evaluate the rate of pouch failure and its risk factors in UC patients over the past decade via a nationwide cohort study.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, multicenter study that included 13 institutions in Japan.

Background/aim: Cancer of the intestinal tract (small and large intestine) associated with Crohn's disease has a low incidence but can be fatal if it develops. Thus, the key question is how to deal with this type of cancer. The current study surveyed major medical facilities that treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) surgically in Japan in order to examine the clinical features of cancer of the intestinal tract associated with Crohn's disease and explore ways to deal with this cancer in the future.
