Purpose: The prognostic significance of the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and red cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with malignancy have not been intensely investigated and are largely overlooked. We, therefore, investigated the clinical significance of MCV and RDW in non-metastatic obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients with a self-expandable metallic stent inserted as a bridge to curative surgery.
Methods: Eighty-five pathological stage II and III OCRC patients were retrospectively evaluated.

This study evaluated the dependence of the signal characteristics of time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (time-SLIP) on flow velocity and tag thickness to depict the pancreatic juice flow by analyzing signal profile using a tube phantom study. The tag edge property was evaluated by edge rise distance (ERD). For various slow flow velocities and tag thicknesses, the signal profile characteristics were evaluated using two indices: the tag center value (R) reduction rate and the total signal value along the tube (T).

Objectives: Understanding the relationship between sarcopenia and malignancy is increasingly important since they inevitably affect the aging population. We investigated the clinical significance of sarcopenia in nonmetastatic obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients who were inserted self-expandable metallic stent and underwent curative surgery.
Methods: Plain cross-sectional CT images obtained before stenting were retrospectively analyzed in 92 patients.

The decomposition of the linear attenuation coefficient into photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering provides virtual monochromatic images (VMIs). The accuracy of the computed tomography (CT) number of VMI, which is obtained by decomposing the linear attenuation coefficient into photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering, was verified in the energy range of 40-200 keV. The possibility of improving the accuracy of CT numbers by using pre-energy-calibrated images as input was also investigated.

Objectives: It has been increasingly recognized that the progression of cancer is dependent not only on the tumor characteristics but also on the nutritious and inflammatory condition of the host. We investigated the relationship between the globulin-to-albumin ratio (GAR) and long-term outcomes in obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients who were inserted self-expandable metallic stent as a bridge to curative surgery.
Methods: A total of 75 pathological stage II and III OCRC patients between 2013 and 2020 were retrospectively evaluated.

Purpose: Intestinal decompression using self-expandable metallic colonic stents (SEMSs) as a bridge to surgery is now considered an attractive alternative to emergency surgery. However, data regarding the optimal timing of surgery after stenting are limited.
Methods: We investigated the impact of the interval between stenting and surgery on short- and long-term outcomes in 92 obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients who had a SEMS inserted and subsequently received curative surgery.

Background & Aims: The efficacy of endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) before endoscopic transpapillary biliary drainage in preventing post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP) has not been established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of performing ES before biliary stent/tube placement on the occurrence of PEP.
Methods: Three hundred seventy patients with biliary stricture requiring endoscopic biliary stenting were enrolled and randomly allocated to the ES group (n = 185) or non-ES group (n = 185).

Whether trastuzumab use beyond disease progression is beneficial in second-line treatment for patients with unresectable human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive gastric cancer remains to be elucidated. We conducted this phase II study to assess whether trastuzumab plus docetaxel was effective for patients with previously treated advanced HER2-positive gastric cancer. This trial was a single-arm, open-label, multicenter, phase II study, conducted by Tohoku Clinical Oncology Research and Education Society (T-CORE).

The recurrence rate of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients after first-time myocardial infarction (MI) is over ten times higher than in the general population. However, it is unclear whether patients with multiple-time MI have an even higher recurrence rate of MI. This study aimed to compare the recurrence rate in patients with multiple-time MI with the rate in patients after first-time MI.

The 2020 Olympic/Paralympic Games have been postponed to 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We developed a model that integrated source-environment-receptor pathways to evaluate how preventive efforts can reduce the infection risk among spectators at the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympic Games. We simulated viral loads of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emitted from infectors through talking/coughing/sneezing and modeled temporal environmental behaviors, including virus inactivation and transfer.

Aims: To clarify the clinical characteristics of IgG4-SC and IgG4-SC without AIP.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed imaging, serology, other organ involvement (OOI) and histology of 872 patients with IgG4-SC who participated in a Japanese nationwide survey in 2019, and compared these items between IgG4-SC with and without AIP.

Introduction: Cystine and theanine are amino acids that contribute to the production of glutathione, which is the most potent antioxidant in the body, and it has been reported that these amino acids prevent immunosuppression, has anti- inflammatory effect, and reduce invasiveness.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of oral administration of amino acids cystine and theanine on stomatitis during chemotherapy.
Subjects And Methods: For 17 patients with Grade 1(CTCAE v4.

A 67-year-old man with complaints of upper abdominal pain visited a clinic and was diagnosed with type 3 gastric cancer. Contrasted-enhanced CT revealed gastric wall thickening and extensive metastatic lymph nodes particularly around the celiac artery and also invasion to pancreas. He was diagnosed with cT4b, cN2, cM0, cStage ⅢB and we treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC)consisting of 4 courses of S-1 and cisplatin regimen.

The number of elderly patients and colorectal cancer patients is increasing, so laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in elderly patients is suspected to increase. In 456 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, we investigated whether laparoscopic surgery for elderly patients with colon cancer patients could be performed equally compared to non-elderly patients. Preoperative ASA-PS was slightly poorer in elderly patients.

Purpose: The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) Score, originally developed as a nutritional screening tool, is a cumulative score calculated from the serum albumin level, total cholesterol level, and total lymphocyte count. Previous studies have demonstrated that the score has significant prognostic value in various malignancies. We investigated the relationship between the CONUT score and long-term survival in obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients who underwent self-expandable metallic colonic stent placement and subsequently received curative surgery.

The X-ray effective energy differs for each computed tomography (CT) scanner even at the same tube voltage because of differences in the bow-tie filter and additional filter. Even when scanning with the same tube voltage and dose setting, these differences in effective energy result in different image noise levels. Although this qualitative change is known, the related quantitative changes have not been clarified.

We investigated the relationship between these markers and the long-term survival in obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC) patients with self-expandable metallic colonic stents (SEMSs) who subsequently received curative surgery.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 72 consecutive pathological stage II and III OCRC patients between 2013 and 2019.
