Acute pancreatitis in children in Japan is often caused by an anatomical abnormality of the pancreatic and bile duct, resulting in fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Crohn's disease, however, is a chronic granulomatous inflammatory bowel disease with ulcerative lesions of the intestinal tract of unknown cause that occurs mainly in young people, with symptoms similar to those of acute pancreatitis. We report a case of acute pancreatitis diagnosed in a patient not only with incomplete fusion of the pancreatic duct but also with Crohn's disease.

[Purpose] To assess the neural fiber damage causing balance deficits in post-stroke patients. [Participants and Methods] Diffusion tensor imaging was conducted during the second week after stroke onset, and the Berg Balance Scale scores were recorded at discharge from our affiliated rehabilitation facility. The total score of the motor component of the Stroke Impairment Assessment Set and the Functional Independence Measure motor score were also documented.

Background: Lateral node metastasis confers a poor prognosis in rectal cancer. Several multidisciplinary treatments have been proposed with favorable outcomes. However, appropriate neoadjuvant/adjuvant treatments or follow-up plans based on information about the probable recurrence site have not been specified.

The challenge in bimaxillary surgery lies in significant intraoperative bleeding, prompting various strategies to minimize blood loss. Among the methods considered for controlling intraoperative bleeding, hypotensive anesthesia and the use of piezosurgical instruments (Osada, Tokyo, Japan) have been explored. However, hypotensive anesthesia may have adverse effects on cardiac function, and surgical time is likely to be prolonged when using piezosurgical instruments.

Objective: Diuretics, including thiazides and thiazide-like drugs, are commonly recommended for treating hypertension, though their precise mechanism of action is not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacological effects of trichloromethiazide (TCM) in malignant stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (M-SHRSP).
Methods: M-SHRSPs were treated with varying doses of TCM.

Acral peeling skin syndrome (APSS; MIM 609796) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by painless focal cutaneous exfoliation of the dorsal hands and feet, typically displaying autosomal recessive inheritance. While cases associated with a founder mutation in TGM5 are relatively common in European Caucasian populations, no APSS cases have been reported from Japan or other East Asian countries. In contrast, Nagashima-type palmoplantar keratosis (NPPK; MIM 615598), caused by variants in SERPINB7, is relatively common in East Asia due to founder mutations.

Background: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the estimated incidence of pseudoaneurysm (PSA) with follow-up computed tomography (CT) for adult splenic injury with nonoperative management (NOM).
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Central, CINAHL, Clinical Trials, and ICTRP databases between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2023. Quality assessment was performed using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Exposures (ROBINS-E) tool.

We report the histological changes over time for a patient with infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) that developed in a transplanted kidney. A 47-year-old man had undergone renal transplantation 3 years ago for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). After several episodes of acute rejection, the patient was in a stable CKD condition.

Evidence on the optimal antibiotic strategy for empyema is lacking. Our database study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of empirical anti-pseudomonal antibiotics in patients with empyema. We utilised a Japanese real-world data database, focusing on patients aged ≥40 diagnosed with empyema, who underwent thoracostomy and received intravenous antibiotics either upon admission or the following day.

Burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS), also referred to as compassion fatigue, are undeniable negative consequences experienced by healthcare professionals when working with patients. As frontline healthcare professionals are essential to communities, it is crucial to understand their mental health and how they cope with negative psychological responses. This study investigated the relationships between burnout, STS, compassion satisfaction, dispositional empathy, and stress management among Japanese healthcare professionals and students taking care of patients in clinical practice.

Purpose: To investigate regional disparities in lung cancer surgery in Japan.
Methods: The annual incidence of lung cancer, lung cancer surgery, and the number of board-certified thoracic surgeons in Japan during 2014-2019 were investigated using a national open database. Lung cancer surgeries were categorized by procedure (wedge resection, segmentectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy) and approach (open, thoracoscopic).

BACKGROUND Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare extranodal large B-cell lymphoma characterized by the selective growth of lymphoma cells within vasculature. This presents a diagnostic challenge due to non-specific symptoms and lack of tumor formation. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) provides useful information in diagnosing FDG-avid lymphoma, but is not specific to IVLBCL.

Aim: Emergency resuscitative thoracotomy is a potentially lifesaving procedure for patients with cardiac pulmonary arrest and profound circulatory failure resulting from a severe injury. However, survival rate post-emergency resuscitative thoracotomy shows considerable variation, with many studies constrained by limited sample sizes and ambiguous criteria for inclusion. Herein, we assessed the outcomes of emergency resuscitative thoracotomy and identified predictors of futility using Japan Trauma Data Bank data.

Background: The role of the pulmonary veins (PVs) as triggers in atrial fibrillation (AF) is well-known; however, their detailed electrophysiological properties have not been thoroughly examined.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological properties of the PVs between paroxysmal AF (pAF) and persistent AF (perAF).
Methods: Prior to catheter ablation in patients with pAF ( = 51) and perAF ( = 41), a voltage map of the left atrium and PVs was created under sinus rhythm, and the area of the myocardial sleeves in the PVs and their electrophysiological characteristics, including the pacing threshold and effective refractory period (ERP), were compared between the two groups.

Objective: This study evaluated the prognostic impact of the quality of dose distribution using dosiomics in patients with prostate cancer, stratified by pretreatment prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and Gleason grade (GG) group.
Methods: A total of 721 patients (Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research [JFCR] cohort: N = 489 and Tokyo Radiation Oncology Clinic [TROC] cohort: N = 232) with localized prostate cancer treated by intensity-modulated radiation therapy were enrolled. Two predictive dosiomic features for biochemical recurrence (BCR) were selected and patients were divided into certain groups stratified by pretreatment PSA levels and GG.

Licorice, one of the most commonly used herbs, can cause hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, and apparent mineralocorticoid excess, also known as pseudoaldosteronism. Herein, we present a case of diaphragmatic dysfunction caused by licorice administration. An 80-year-old woman who had been taking dietary supplements and following a restricted diet for approximately 6 months was brought to the emergency department with impaired consciousness.

Objectives Fabry disease is characterized by the systemic accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) and globotriaosylsphingosine (Lyso-Gb3), which are widely used as biomarkers of the disease. However, few reports have described the relationship of Lyso-Gb3 analogs and Gb3 isoforms with the disease. The present study determined the profiles of Lyso-Gb3 analogs and Gb3 isoforms accumulated in body fluids from various phenotypic Fabry patients to elucidate the basis of the disease.
