Introduction: This study examined the prevalence of the use of different complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) strategies, families' attitudes and belief systems about the use of these strategies, and the economic burden of these strategies placed on family income in families of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Method: A questionnaire survey concerning the use of CAM in children with ASD was administered to parents in the five different geographic locations in Turkey.
Result: Of the 172 respondents, 56% had used at least one CAM therapy.

Background: Thoracic peri-aortic fat tissue (PFT) and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) are metabolically active visceral fat deposits surrounding the thoracic aorta and the heart, respectively. Various studies have demonstrated a positive predictive value of both PFT and EAT for coronary artery disease in the general population. In the present study, we aimed to investigate PFT thickness and the independent predictors of PFT in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, coronary artery calcification (CAC), and left ventricular hypertrophy are the most commonly encountered risk factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in end-stage renal disease patients. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is the true visceral fat depot of the heart. The relationship between coronary artery disease and EAT has been shown in healthy subjects and patients with a high risk of coronary artery disease.

Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have elevated serum levels of inflammatory mediators including C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL)-6. Systemic inflammation was found to be correlated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in this population. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was introduced as a potential marker to determine inflammation in cardiac and non-cardiac disorders.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and sleep quality (SQ) were impaired in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The impairment of both HRQoL and SQ and being in a depressive mood were found to be associated with increased morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. We aimed to investigate the association between SQ, HRQoL, and depression, and to define independent predictors of SQ and depression in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients.

Purpose: Myocardial iron overload remains an important problem and results in cardiac dysfunction in patients with thalassemia major (TM). The ratio of color M-mode flow propagation velocity to early diastolic transmitral flow velocity (E/Vp) in echocardiography is a marker of increased left ventricular filling pressure, which is independent of preload, afterload, and heart rate. We examined the relationship between E/Vp and iron loading in patients with TM using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Hemodialysis patients have extremely increased cardiovascular mortality. Vascular calcification, inflammation, and low serum fetuin-A levels are implicated for increased mortality. In this study, relationship between coronary artery calcification, inflammation, and serum fetuin-A levels were investigated.

Osteoid osteoma, a benign bone tumor, is characterized by a generally less than 1 cm nidus surrounded by a zone of reactive sclerosis. It is frequently located in the femur and tibia; on the other hand in up to 5% of cases it may be presented in upper extremities. In previous years, its treatment was usually open surgery with en-bloc resection or curettage of the tumor.

Objective: The goal of the study described here was to evaluate interictal heart rate variability (HRV) in young patients with epilepsy, a patient population in whom sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is known to be more common.
Methods: Twenty-four-hour ambulatory ECG Holter recordings of 37 patients (15-40 years old) and 32 healthy controls were compared.
Results: All of the time domain indices (SDNN, SDANN, RMSSD, and HRV triangular index) were significantly suppressed (P<0.

Background: Cardiovascular problems are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR) as a marker of endothelial dysfunction, carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) as a marker of subclinical organ damage and insulin resistance (IR) as a cardiovascular risk factor in patients with ADPKD.
Methods: Twenty-two normotensive ADPKD patients with well-preserved renal function and 19 healthy subjects were included in the study.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is believed to be the single leading cause of death in both men and women in the world. Smoking is the most important risk factor for CAD. Smoking increases platelet aggregation and thrombus formation.

Objectives: Atrial remodeling is an important part of cardiac remodeling after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of spironolactone on atria in patients with preserved left ventricular (LV) functions after AMI by using two-dimensional and tissue Doppler imaging techniques (TDI).
Methods: The study consisted of 110 patients with AMI, successfully revascularized with percutaneous coronary intervention, ejection fraction greater than or equal to 40%, and Killip class I-II.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogenous group of predominantly antibody-deficiency disorders that make up the greatest proportion of patients with symptomatic primary hypogammaglobulinemia. The rare coincidence of amyloidosis and hypogammaglobulinemia has been reported previously. Contrary to the usual insidious, slowly progressive disease following hepatitis C infection, a rapidly progressive cirrhotic form can develop in hypogammaglobulinemic patients.

Background: The exaggerated blood pressure response to exercise (EBPR) is an independent predictor of hypertension. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous nitric oxide inhibitor and higher plasma levels of ADMA are related to increased cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between ADMA and EBPR.

In this study, we evaluated the gender differences in body mass index (BMI), age and their effects on apnea-hypopnea index during total sleep time (AHI(TST)) in the Turkish population who were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and compared them with data from the literature. A computerized database of 244 Turkish patients (194 males, 50 females) who had undergone overnight polysomnography (PSG) and diagnosed with OSAS at Bayindir Hospital sleep laboratory between October 2004 and January 2007 was reviewed. The male:female ratio of the patients was 3.
