Parry-Romberg syndrome is characterized by progressive hemifacial atrophy that is the lack of tissue (generally soft tissue and rarely bone and muscle) in the atrophic area of the face. The etiology and the incidence of this pathologic process are uncertain, but it is relatively rare and self-limited. The objective of this study is to present 21-year-old female patient with progressive hemifacial atrophy who was reconstructed with composite galeal frontalis flap.

The effect of pinealectomy on plasma vasopressin response to isotonic, hypertonic and hypovolemic treatments in rats supplemented with L-thyroxine.

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of basal, isotonic as well as hypertonic and hypovolemic treatments on fluid-electrolyte balance and plasma AVP levels in rats supplemented with L-thyroxine and pinealectomized L-thyroxine. The animals were initially separated into 4 groups: control (n = 24), L-thyroxine treated (n = 24); L-thyroxine + sham-pinealectomy (n = 24) treated and 4-L-thyroxine + pinealectomy (n = 24) treated. L-thyroxine was given for 4 weeks.

Comparison of different dose regimens of enoxaparin in deep vein thrombosis therapy in pregnancy.

Introduction: Pregnant women have a higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and consequent thrombogenic events, including pulmonary embolisms. Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) products have been shown to successfully treat DVT with few significant side effects. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two dose regimens of enoxaparin (a LMWH) in the management of DVT in pregnancy.

Relation of glutathione S-transferase T1, M1 and P1 genotypes and breast cancer risk.

The aim of this study was to investigate associations between genetic variability in specific Glutathione S-transferases (GST) genes (GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1) and susceptibility to breast cancer. Genotypes of blood specimen DNA were determined for 65 women with incident cases of breast cancer and 108 control subjects. Associations between specific genotypes and the development of breast cancer were examined by the use of logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Background: It is important to reshape the breast with the least scar possible. This has led us to develop a technique for large breasts where the vertical scar was eliminated.

Methods: The new nipple is positioned at 19-21 cm.

Objective: The -5T/C polymorphism in the Kozak sequence of glycoprotein Ibalpha, a component of the platelet glycoprotein Ib-IX-V receptor complex, is associated with an increase in this receptor density on the surface of the platelet. This study was designed to investigate the effect of platelet glycoprotein Ibalpha Kozak polymorphism on the clinical presentation of the patients with acute pulmonary embolism.

Methods: Forty-two patients with pulmonary embolism were genotyped for Kozak polymorphism of the glycoprotein Ibalpha by polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism.

The acute effect of tropisetron on ECG parameters in cancer patients.

Objectives: The 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor antagonists, including tropisetron, ondansetron, granisetron, and dolasetron are agents used effectively for supportive care. They are used for the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy-induced emesis. Despite their overall excellent safety profile, some electrocardiographic changes related to heart rate and repolarization were reported.

Lesions of the groin include hernia, hydrocele, spermatic cord cyst, undescended testes, lymphadenopathy, and abscess. Hydatid cysts are endemic in certain regions of the world. They are usually located in the liver, lung, spleen, brain, and kidney.

Preconditioning with levosimendan prevents contractile dysfunction due to H2O2-induced oxidative stress in human myocardium.

We studied the inotropic and possible antioxidant effects of levosimendan in human atrial strips, before and after induction of oxidative stress induced by H2O2. Levosimendan (10(-9) to 10(-6) M) increased contractions induced by electrical stimulation (ES) in human atrial strips. The maximal positive inotropic effect of levosimendan was 145.

The acute effect of trastuzumab infusion on ECG parameters in metastatic breast cancer patients.

Objectives: Although trastuzumab therapy is known to be associated with congestive heart failure, its arrhythmogenic potential has not been studied in detail. The purpose of this study was to determine the acute influence of trastuzumab infusion on electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: Twenty patients with HER2 overexpressing metastatic breast cancer and normal cardiac function were enrolled in this single-centre prospective study.

A rare presentation of true hermaphroditism: an abnormal inguinoscrotal mass.

This study examined the differential diagnosis of inguinoscrotal masses and true hermaphroditism as well as incarcerated inguinal hernia in the differential diagnosis of abnormal inguinoscrotal masses. Inguinoscrotal masses are a rare presentation of true hermaphroditism. A child with an inguinoscrotal mass of the right groin and penoscrotal hypospadias was diagnosed.

Effect of pinealectomy on homocysteine levels in ovariectomized rats.

Objective: Hyperhomocysteinemia plays a role in obstetric and gynecological diseases and such diseases are seen as a consequence of an impaired methionine cycle. In the present study, it was aimed to determine the effect of estradiol and progesterone on homocysteine levels in pinealectomized and ovariectomized rats.

Materials And Methods: The study was carried out on 24 adult Spraque-Dawley female rats.

[Nonoperatively treated penetrating thoracic and abdominal wound caused by a low-velocity shot].

This paper describes the successful nonoperative treatment of a 31-year-old male patient with thoracic and abdominal gunshot wounds. Once stabilized in the emergency department (ED), he was transferred to our general surgical department. On the first day after his admission, diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) was performed, revealing a small amount of hemorrhagic fluid.

A comparison of liquid-based cytology with conventional cytology.

Objective: To evaluate the 2 methods of cytologic screening to detect abnormalities of the cervical epithelium.

Methods: This study with 3 groups of women was performed at Selcuk University Meram Medical School between January 2004 and March 2006. In one group (paired sample for specimen collection) women were screened with conventional cytology; in another group (paired sample for specimen collection) they were screened with liquid-based cytology; and in the third group (split sample for specimen collection) they were screened by both methods.

Diuretics, plasma brain natriuretic peptide and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Background: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is associated with increased myocardial stretching. This study aims to assess the effect of mild diuretics on plasma BNP levels in patients with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have high plasma concentrations of BNP.

Methods: Thirty consecutive patients with an acute exacerbation of COPD without any clinical evidence of cor pulmonale who had elevated plasma BNP concentrations (group 1) and 15 patients with stable COPD as controls (group 2) participated in this study.

The effect of costal cartilage resection on the chest wall development: a morphometric evaluation.

Objective: In repair of thoracic wall deformities, there is a debate in the literature regarding the optimal age and the type and number of costal cartilage resections. We evaluated the effect of costal cartilage resections on the chest wall development in young rabbits.

Methods: Fifty apparently healthy, 6 weeks of age, male New Zealand white rabbits were evaluated in five groups, each including 10 subjects.

Severity of coronary artery disease and symptoms of erectile dysfunction in males with a positive exercise treadmill test.

Aim: The objective of this study is to investigate the significance of erectile dysfunction in males with a positive exercise treadmill test (ETT) to predict the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).

Materials And Method: With no previous marked CAD, and applying to our clinic with chest pain, 105 male patients (mean age: 56 +/- 8 years) underwent coronary angiography after the ETT. These patients met our criteria and were included in our study.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the trachea mimicking bronchial asthma: report of a case.

Benign tracheal tumors are rare and difficult to diagnose. A delay in diagnosis is common because the symptoms mimic those of bronchial asthma. We report the case of a 42-year-old woman who was treated for asthma for 2 years before a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma of the trachea was made.
