The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of iloprost, a cytoprotective prostacyclin analog, on renal injury during unilateral renal I/R in rats and to determine whether the levels of serum cystatin C (CyC) and beta2-microglobulin (B2M), as markers of glomerular function, might denote this injury. Thirty-two Wistar rats were randomized into four groups (n = 8) as follows: control (sham laparotomy), renal I/R (60-min left renal ischemia and 120-min reperfusion), renal I/R + iloprost (20 ng kg(-1) min(-1) infusion during renal I/R period, i.v.

Background: To determine the individual effect of abnormalities in blood pressure (BP) circadian rhythm (non-dipping status (NDS), increased morning BP (MBP) or increased MBP surge (MBPS)) on target organ damage (TOD) and which of these is more closely related to TOD in normotensives.

Methods And Results: The 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) and echocardiography were performed and urinary albumin excretion (UAE) was measured in 47 dipper (28 women, mean age 45.8 +/- 9.

Background: Coronary artery disease is one of the most common causes of complete atrioventricular block (AVB) in adults. In this study, we evaluated whether prompt revascularization of the coronary artery occlusion can ameliorate new-onset complete AVB due to acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Methods: Five patients (4 men and 1 woman) with a mean age of 69.

Repair of coarctation-related aortic arch aneurysm and ventricular septal defect in an adolescent.

Tex Heart Inst J

August 2009

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Meram Medical School, Selcuk University, 42080 Konya, Turkey.

A saccular aortic arch aneurysm that is secondary to aortic arch coarctation and that is accompanied by a ventricular septal defect is a rare combination in the adolescent patient. Total simultaneous repair of all of these conditions is desirable, because of the higher morbidity and mortality rates of staged procedures-particularly when resection of the saccular aneurysm is delayed. Herein, we discuss the case of a 16-year-old boy who underwent simultaneous surgical correction of these malformations.

The effect of pre-operative atorvastatin on systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), often seen after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was evaluated in 40 patients undergoing elective CABG. Patients were divided into two groups: group I (pre-operative LDL cholesterol > or = 100 mg/dl; n = 20) received 20 mg/day atorvastatin for at least 15 days pre-operatively; group II (pre-operative LDL cholesterol < 100 mg/dl; n = 20) did not receive antihyperlipidaemic agents. All patients underwent CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Background: Cardiac structural changes have been reported to be more prominent in nondipper normotensives than the dipper ones. But the influence of nondipping status on cardiac diastolic functions of normotensives has not been studied yet. In this study, we investigated the effect of nondipping status on both cardiac structural changes and left ventricular (LV) diastolic functions in normotensives.

Correlation between osteopontin protein expression and histological grade of astrocytomas.

Pathol Oncol Res

June 2009

Department of Pathology, Meram Medical School, Selcuk University, 42080 Meram, Konya, Turkey.

Osteopontin is a ligand for the integrin proteins, which are cell surface receptors that mediate the physical and functional interactions between a cell and the extracellular matrix. The expression of osteopontin is reportedly increased in a number of transformed cell lines and tumor tissues. Furthermore, increased expression of osteopontin results in some infiltrative features of tumors.

Endothelin is both a potent vasoconstrictor and an important mediator of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Therefore, the role of endothelin receptor antagonism in IR-induced-tissue injury carries great interest. Here, we examined the effect of tezosentan, a nonselective antagonist for endothelin receptors, on myocardial injury induced by abdominal aortic IR, which represents a model of the IR injury in distant organs frequently occurred after vascular surgery.

Background: Surgical shunting might be considered as the only option in the treatment of extended ischemic priapism that does not respond to aspiration and medication.

Objective: A modified, simple, minimally invasive, and easily applicable artificial cavernosal-venous shunt technique for treating priapism is described in this report.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A total of 15 patients with extended and nonresponsive low-flow priapism were treated with this technique between January 1998 and February 2007.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of melatonin in preventing ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury-induced tissue damage and on spermatogenesis after experimental testicular torsion (TT).

Methods: Forty peripubertal rats were divided into 4 groups each containing 10 rats: control (C), sham (S), torsion plus detorsion (TD), and torsion plus melatonin (M). The left testes were rotated 720 degrees for 6 hours and detorsed for 6 hours thereafter.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus on epicardial coronary flow velocity assessed by the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count. The thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count was measured in 272 coronary arteries from 101 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and in 271 coronary arteries from 104 age- and gender-matched patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus referred for coronary angiography. The thrombolysis in myocardial infarction frame count was measured only in normal arteries or in arteries without significant lesion.

September 2007

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Meram Medical School University of Selcuk, Konya, Turkey.

This article describes the concomitant presence of two anomalous forearm muscles in a 20-year-old man, discovered accidentally during an operation for a forearm injury. The first one was similar to a reverse palmaris longus muscle except for its direction to the Guyon's canal. The second one originated from the radial antebrachial fascia, superficial to all other forearm muscles in the lower half of the forearm, then diverged medially and extended into the Guyon's canal and was innervated by the ulnar nerve.
