Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common motor-postural disorders in childhood. It occurs due to impairment in the developing brain-before, during, or after birth-and has a significant burden on the public health system. This study aimed to investigate the potential risk factors and detect the associated CP-related disorders.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) induces a generalized seizure under anesthesia with an electrical current for treatment-resistant patients and may be underutilized. To our knowledge, no large-scale, American, nationwide hospital system retrospective study has examined how ECT affects psychiatric rehospitalization chances.

Methods: We analyzed initial inpatient encounters for adults aged > 18 years at HCA Healthcare Behavioral Health Units from 2016 to 2021 with diagnoses of major depressive disorder with/without psychosis, bipolar disorder with/without psychosis, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia.

Exploring the Long-Term Effect of Artificial Sweeteners on Metabolic Health.

Cureus

September 2024

Department of Pharmacology, Sri Ramaswamy Memorial (SRM) College of Pharmacy, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur, IND.

Artificial sweeteners (ASs) are widely used as low-calorie sugar substitutes for managing conditions like diabetes and obesity, but recent evidence suggests their health effects may be more complex than previously understood. High consumption has been associated with increased risks of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, and, somewhat paradoxically, weight gain, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and potential risks for individuals with low seizure thresholds. Studies, including the Women's Health Initiative, have linked artificially sweetened beverages to an elevated risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and mortality, independent of established risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a rare disorder causing severe seizures and brain atrophy in children, often requiring surgical intervention when treatments fail.
  • A case study highlights a woman who had a left hemispherectomy at age seven and successfully went through two pregnancies, experiencing temporary worsening of her symptoms during each but returning to her baseline afterward.
  • This situation underscores the lack of data on RE and pregnancy, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring and an interdisciplinary approach to ensure the health and safety of both mother and child during and after pregnancy.

A large number of clinical studies demonstrate that the ketogenic diet (KD) may be an effective approach to the reduction of epileptic seizures in children and adults. Such dietary therapy could also help pregnant women with epilepsy, especially since most antiseizure drugs have teratogenic action. However, there is a lack of medical data, considering the safety of using KD during gestation for the progeny.

Objective: Providing accurate prenatal prognostication for expectant parents is challenging due to limited literature on factors impacting outcomes in children with congenital aqueductal stenosis (CAS). This study stratified CAS patients into isolated or complex categories (presence of additional intra- or extra-cranial anomalies or genetic syndromes) and evaluated both short- and long-term outcomes. Additionally, the role of ventricular rupture was assessed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term effects of opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) during pregnancy, specifically focusing on the impact of methadone and buprenorphine on childhood neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).
  • Using Rhode Island Medicaid data from 2008-2018, the research looks at pregnancies with opioid use disorder (OUD) and evaluates the timing of drug exposure during gestation.
  • Results indicated that children exposed to methadone in early pregnancy had a significantly higher incidence of NDDs (36%) compared to those exposed to buprenorphine (17%), highlighting a potential risk associated with the timing and type of OMT used.

Department of Pediatric Physiotherapy, Ravi Nair Physiotherapy College, Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education and Research, Wardha, IND.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a serious condition affecting newborns when their brain lacks oxygen and blood flow, usually due to issues during pregnancy or delivery.
  • The case highlights a male infant with HIE who needed ventilator support and later developed pneumonia, leading to respiratory and feeding problems.
  • Treatment involving chest physiotherapy and oromotor stimulation (OMS) showed positive effects, improving the infant's respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcomes, suggesting a path toward better recovery.

  • The increasing prescription of levetiracetam during pregnancy raises concerns about its potential link to stillbirth and spontaneous abortion, despite its lower teratogenic risk.
  • A study analyzed over 2,800 cases of these adverse events in women with epilepsy, identifying the association of levetiracetam and several other antiseizure medications with increased risks of spontaneous abortion and stillbirth.
  • The findings suggest a significant disproportionality signal for levetiracetam, indicating that women taking this medication may have a higher risk of these adverse outcomes, warranting further caution and research.
