Background: Proteinuria is broadly classified into glomerular and tubular proteinuria. Urinary beta-2-microglobulin (β2-MG) is known as a marker for detecting tubulointerstitial diseases. However, tubulointerstitial damage can also lead to an increase in urinary β2-MG level in some patients with glomerular diseases.

The Veggie Meter® (VM) is a refraction spectrometer that detects skin carotenoids. We tested the variability of the two modes (single-scan and averaging modes) of four VMs of three different versions (VM-1, 2, 3, 4) with 92 healthy volunteers. Both the modes exhibited a high intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC); however, the averaging mode had a significantly lower coefficient of variance than the single-scan mode.

Background: We hypothesized that fine finger motor functions are controlled by the ipsilesional hemisphere, and that gross motor functions are compensated for by the contralesional hemisphere after brain injury in humans. The purpose of this study was to compare finger movements before and after hemispherotomy that defunctionated the ipsilesional hemisphere for patients with hemispherical lesions.
Methods: We statistically compared Brunnstrom stage of the fingers, arm (upper extremity), and leg (lower extremity) before and after hemispherotomy.

Objective: Unstable hemoglobinopathy (UH), red blood cell membrane disease (MD), and red blood cell enzymopathy are known as major congenital hemolytic anemias. Specialized examinations are needed for their differential diagnosis. We hypothesized that simultaneous measurements of HbA1c levels using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) by fast mode (FM) and immunoassay [HPLC (FM)-HbA1c and IA-HbA1c, respectively] are useful for the differential diagnosis of UH from other congenital hemolytic anemias and verified this hypothesis in this study.

Purpose: We recently constructed an algorithm to measure visual field (VF) using the variational Bayes linear regression (VBLR). This algorithm enabled a faster VF measurement than the Swedish interactive thresholding algorithm (SITA) standard while maintaining the test-retest reproducibility (Murata H, et al. Br J Ophthalmol 2021).

Focal cortical dysplasia is the most common malformation during cortical development, sometimes excised by epilepsy surgery and often caused by somatic variants of the mTOR pathway genes. In this study, we performed a genetic analysis of epileptogenic brain malformed lesions from 64 patients with focal cortical dysplasia, hemimegalencephy, brain tumors, or hippocampal sclerosis. Targeted sequencing, whole-exome sequencing, and single nucleotide polymorphism microarray detected four germline and 35 somatic variants, comprising three copy number variants and 36 single nucleotide variants and indels in 37 patients.

Background: Childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (CECTS) is the most common epilepsy syndrome in school-aged children. However, predictors for seizure frequency are yet to be clarified using the phase lag index (PLI) analyses. We investigated PLI of scalp electroencephalography data at onset to identify potential predictive markers for seizure times.

Aims: Although the delivery catheter system for pacemaker-lead implantation is a new alternative to the stylet system, no randomized controlled trial has addressed the difference in right ventricular (RV) lead placement accuracy to the septum between the stylet and the delivery catheter systems. This multicentre prospective randomized controlled trial aimed to prove the efficacy of the delivery catheter system for accurate delivery of RV lead to the septum.
Methods And Results: In this trial, 70 patients (mean age 78 ± 11 years; 30 men) with pacemaker indications of atrioventricular block were randomized to the delivery catheter or the stylet groups.

We comprehensively assessed the roles of systemic redox markers by including both prooxidant and antioxidant markers in 121 Japanese subjects (mean ± SD age, 70 ± 11 years; 38 men) with no ocular pathology except age-related cataract. Serum levels of lipid peroxides, ferric-reducing activity, and thiol antioxidant activity were measured using the diacron reactive oxygen metabolite (dROM), biologic antioxidant potential (BAP), and sulfhydryl (SH) tests, respectively, using a free-radical analyzer. Univariate analyses suggested that older age, higher pulse rate, worse best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), higher intraocular pressure, and higher cataract grade were associated with a lower SH level.

Objective: Unique clinical courses were observed in two asymptomatic patients receiving warfarin who referred to our hospital because of suspected central hyperthyroidism. We eventually diagnosed these patients with falsely elevated thyroid hormone levels caused by macroscopically invisible fibrin. Although false results caused by fibrin interference in vitro have been identified in various immunoassays, especially in blood samples from patients receiving anticoagulant therapy, no studies on thyroid function testing have been reported.
