Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is a rare and severe type of skeletal dysplasia. Typical clinical findings include macrocephaly, shortening of the four limbs, underdeveloped lungs, and thoracic hypoplasia. Neonates with TD develop severe respiratory problems due to thoracic hypoplasia and require respiratory management for survival.

Purpose: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of antiemetic therapy with olanzapine, a neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist (RA), a 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 (5-HT) RA, and dexamethasone for preventing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in patients receiving carboplatin-containing chemotherapy.
Patients And Methods: Chemotherapy-naïve patients scheduled to receive carboplatin (AUC ≥5) were randomly assigned to receive either olanzapine 5 mg once daily (olanzapine group) or placebo (placebo group) in combination with aprepitant, a 5-HT RA, and dexamethasone. The primary end point was the complete response (CR; no vomiting and no rescue therapy) rate in the overall phase (0-120 hours).

Carotenoids play a role in preventing and impeding the progression of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) through their anti-oxidative effects. This study evaluated associations between ASCVD risk and skin carotenoid (SC) levels, reflecting dietary carotenoid intake. Participants' ASCVD risk was assessed using the Hisayama ASCVD risk prediction model, and SC levels were measured through a reflection spectroscope (Veggie Meter).

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether bone mineral density (BMD) ≥ -2.5 SD could be used as the treat-to-target (T2T) goal when treating osteoporosis with teriparatide (TPTD) and alendronate (ALN), and to investigate the relationship with incident vertebral fracture by re-analyzing data from a randomized, controlled trial (JOINT-05) involving postmenopausal Japanese women at high fracture risk.
Materials And Methods: Participants received sequential therapy with once-weekly TPTD for 72 weeks, followed by ALN for 48 weeks (TPTD-ALN group) or ALN monotherapy for 120 weeks (ALN group).

Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2) mediates the crosslinking of extracellular collagen, reflecting qualitative changes in liver fibrosis. This study aimed to validate the utility of serum LOXL2 levels as a predictive biomarker for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who achieved a sustained virological response (SVR). This retrospective study included 137 patients with chronic HCV infection without history of HCC development and who achieved SVR via direct-acting antiviral therapy.

Introduction: Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a rare benign tumor classified as a pulmonary adenoma. It presents as a solitary pulmonary nodule without any specific findings, often posing a diagnostic challenge. We herein present a case of a PSP with a short volume doubling time (VDT) comparable to low-grade pulmonary malignancies.

Background: Despite the effectiveness of the retrograde approach for chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesions, there are no standardized tools to predict the success of retrograde percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop a prediction tool to identify CTO lesions that will achieve successful retrograde PCI.
Methods: This study evaluated data from 2,374 patients who underwent primary retrograde CTO-PCI and were enrolled in the Japanese CTO-PCI Expert Registry between January 2016 and December 2022 (NCT01889459).

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a primary immunodeficiency disease caused by molecular defects in nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase. p67-CGD is an autosomal recessive CGD, which is caused by a defect in the cytosolic components of NADPH oxidase, p67, encoded by NCF2. We previously established a flow cytometric analysis for p67 expression, which allows accurate assessment of residual protein expression in p67-CGD.

Background: A recent large real-world study conducted in the United States reported the effectiveness of palbociclib plus aromatase inhibitor in HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer (ABC). However, local clinical practice and available medical treatment can vary between Japan and Western countries. Thus, it is important to investigate Japanese real-world data.

Purpose: To assess the impact of glaucoma on perceiving three-dimensional (3D) shapes based on monocular depth cues.
Study Design: Clinical observational study.
Methods: Twenty glaucoma patients, subjected to binocular visual-field sensitivity (binocular-VFS) tests using a Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, and 20 age-matched healthy volunteers, underwent two tasks: identifying the nearest vertex of a 3D shape using monocular shading (3D-SfS), texture (3D-SfT), or motion (3D-SfM) cues, and distinguishing elementary one-dimensional (1D) features of these cues.

Background: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is often concomitant with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which can cause adverse cardiovascular events. Although an appropriate approach to SDB prevents cardiac remodelling, detection of concomitant SDB in patients with HCM remains suboptimal. Thus, we aimed to develop a machine learning-based discriminant model for SDB in HCM.

Rationale: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nerves, leading to weakness and sensory symptoms. CIDP is a rare disease, and few studies have reported on anesthetic management in patients with this condition, especially the peripheral nerve block (PNB). Therefore, a safe and standardized anesthetic approach remains to be established.
