Purpose: To explore if recentering the humeral head could improve shoulder abduction in shoulders with irreparable massive rotator cuff tears (IMRCTs).

Methods: Nine fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were used to simulate the intact condition and IMRCTs as controls. Four 'recenter' interventions were then sequentially applied: subacromial interposition (SI) using 4- and 8-mm spacers and superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) using two- and four-layer fascia lata grafts.

Background: Nursing staff need to be constantly exposed to information systems at work and encounter patients who share medical data obtained from the internet; this was widely observed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Hence, nursing staff should have the necessary skills and education that can help them develop nursing students' informatics competencies. However, research on assessing and improving nursing students' informatics competencies remains scarce.

Variants in EP400, encoding a chromatin remodeler, cause epilepsy with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Am J Hum Genet

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Institute of Neuroscience, Key Laboratory of Neurogenetics and Channelopathies of Guangdong Province and the Ministry of Education of China, the Second Affiliated Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou 510260, Guangdong, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • EP400 is a gene that encodes an essential protein for ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling, and its role in diseases is not well understood, although this study suggests a link to epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).
  • Researchers conducted whole-exome sequencing on 402 families and found EP400 variants associated with individuals experiencing epilepsy and NDDs, with some variants being inherited and others newly formed.
  • The study also demonstrated that EP400 is crucial during brain development, particularly in neurons, and its deficiency can lead to significant neurological issues, making it a potentially key player in these conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) along with Procalcitonin (PCT) levels in distinguishing Tuberculous Lymph Nodes (TLN) from Metastatic Lymph Nodes (MLN) in 207 patients.
  • Results showed significant differences in imaging patterns, with TLN exhibiting specific enhancements that were less common in MLN, and higher PCT levels indicating a higher risk for MLN.
  • The combination of CEUS and PCT provided a more accurate predictive model for diagnosing MLN, demonstrating good calibration and diagnostic performance.

Clin Exp Med

December 2024

Department of Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery, Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200127, People's Republic of China.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract that is characterized by a poor prognosis. This study investigates the roles of immunogenic cell death (ICD) genes in the prognosis and progression of PC. Expression data for PC patients were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets, while ICD genes were sourced from published literature.

Background: Fabry disease (FD), an X-linked lysosomal disorder, is marked by a lack of alpha-galactosidase A (α-Gal A). Agalsidase beta, a recombinant form of α-Gal A, is fundamental to enzyme replacement therapy for FD but requires close monitoring for adverse events (AEs).

Research Design And Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database for agalsidase beta-related AEs.
