Poly(acrylic acid)-Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (PAC-IONs) did not compromise the viability of mononuclear cells and potentially interact with cells through scavenger receptors. This study evaluated: 1) The capacity of the PAC-IONs to induce platelet activation and aggregation, and 2) The effect of the PAC-IONs in two functions of Monocyte-Derived Macrophages (MDMs) when differentiated in their presence; that is, the removal of apoptotic cells (ACs) and the levels of cytokines induced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and the ACs. The PAC-IONs did not affect the platelet activation but antagonized their aggregation.

Background: Endothelial activation and damage is commonly observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and is related to development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Different components of the immune system seem to participate in the endothelial injury, such as generation of autoantibodies and formation of immune complexes (ICs). Microparticles (MPs) and their immune complexes (MPs-ICs) are increased in the circulation of patients with SLE and RA; therefore, we propose these extracellular vesicles could interact and modulate the function of endothelial cells.

Fiber fermentation by gut microbiota yields short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are either absorbed by the gut or excreted in feces. Studies are conflicting as to whether SCFAs are beneficial or detrimental to cardiometabolic health, and how gut microbiota associated with SCFAs is unclear. In this study of 441 community-dwelling adults, we examined associations of fecal SCFAs, gut microbiota diversity and composition, gut permeability, and cardiometabolic outcomes, including obesity and hypertension.

Emergence of drug resistance and targeting all stages of the parasite life cycle are currently the major challenges in antimalarial chemotherapy. Molecular hybridization combining two scaffolds in a single molecule is an innovative strategy for achieving these goals. In this work, a series of novel quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide hybrids containing either chloroquine or primaquine pharmacophores was designed, synthesized and tested against both chloroquine sensitive and multidrug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum.

Benzophenones (BPs) family is one of the most frequently used groups of UV-filters. However, it has been reported by different authors that this kind of chemical compounds could be associated with some endocrine disrupting activity, genotoxicity and reproductive toxicity. In addition, different studies have evidenced the presence of BPs in several environmental matrices, indicating that conventional technologies of water treatment are not able to remove them, which generates the necessity of evaluating new alternatives of remediation.

Astrocytes play metabolic and structural support roles and contribute to the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), linking communication between neurons and the endothelium. Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) likely exerts a dual effect on the endothelium and astrocytes due to its involvement in migration and angiogenesis; the overactivation of CDK5 is associated with dysfunction in glutamate recapture and hypoxia. Recently, we proposed that CDK5-targeted astrocytes facilitate the recovery of neurological and motor function in transplanted ischemic rats.

During the past two decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the recognition and characterization of novel insect-specific flaviviruses (ISFVs). Some of these agents are closely related to important mosquito-borne flavivirus pathogens. Results of experimental studies suggest that mosquitoes and mosquito cell cultures infected with some ISFVs are refractory to superinfection with related flavivirus pathogens; and it has been proposed that ISFVs potentially could be used to alter the vector competence of mosquitoes and reduce transmission of specific flavivirus pathogens, such as dengue, West Nile, or Zika viruses.
