Trypanosomes are blood parasites capable of infecting nearly any vertebrate. Many Neotropical primates frequently host trypanosomes and are considered potential reservoirs for and other human-pathogenic trypanosomatids. However, diagnostic methods originally developed for detecting these trypanosomatids in humans and domestic species must be validated to reliably diagnose infections in non-human primates.

The systematics of the holoendoparasitic flowering plant families Apodanthaceae and Rafflesiaceae has been discussed for over two centuries. The morphological reduction of roots, shoots and leaves in all members of both families, resulting in a cryptic mycelium-like vegetative body, has been interpreted either as a key common feature, or as a result of convergent evolution due to full dependence upon their hosts. Historically, the two families have been placed together due to similar morphological features, but recent analyses based on few mitochondrial and ribosomal gene markers placed them in the distantly related orders Cucurbitales and Malpighiales.

Introduction: Amyloid beta and tau pathology are the hallmarks of sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) and autosomal dominant AD (ADAD). However, Lewy body pathology (LBP) is found in ≈ 50% of AD and ADAD brains.
Methods: Using an α-synuclein seed amplification assay (SAA) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from asymptomatic (n = 26) and symptomatic (n = 27) ADAD mutation carriers, including 12 with known neuropathology, we investigated the timing of occurrence and prevalence of SAA positive reactivity in ADAD in vivo.

Fusarium, a member of the Ascomycota fungi, encompasses several pathogenic species significant to plants and animals. Some phytopathogenic species have received special attention due to their negative economic impact on the agricultural industry around the world. Introduction: Heart rate variability (HRV), brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), and gut microbiota (GM) are three recognized indicators of health status, whose relationship has not been characterized. We aimed to identify the GM genera and families related to HRV and rsFC, the interaction effect of HRV and rsFC on GM taxa abundance, and the mediation effect of diet on these relationships.
Methods: Eighty-eight healthy, young Colombian men were included in this cross-sectional study.

Oxidative stress may regulate telomere shortening, which is implicated in the increased risk. Mitoviruses were initially known for their presence in the mitochondria of fungi and were considered exclusive to these organisms. However, recent studies have shown that they are also present in a large number of plant species. Despite the potential impact that mitoviruses might have on the mitochondria of plant cells, there is a lack of information about these ancient RNA viruses, especially within the Cannabaceae family.

Researchers working on evolutionary developmental plant biology are inclined to choose non-model taxa to address how specific features have been acquired during ontogeny and fixed during phylogeny. In this chapter we describe methods to extract RNA, to assemble de-novo transcriptomes, to isolate orthologous genes within gene families, and to evaluate expression and function of target genes. We have successfully optimized these protocols for non-model plant species including ferns, gymnosperms, and a large assortment of angiosperms.

This article presents the use of generalized additive model for location scale and shape (GAMLSS) in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the relationships between environmental parameters and cyanotoxins in the tropical reservoirs of Colombia. The physicochemical parameters were evaluated on each of the cyanotoxins detected with levels high by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The models showed a relation between cyanotoxins and the nutrients as soluble total Kjeldahl nitrogen (NTK), soluble phosphorus (soluble P), total phosphorus (total P), and nitrates (NO), among other nutrients that are necessary for the growth of organisms that produce toxins.

This study presents the main results related to the use of activated persulfate (PS) in the elimination of the beta-lactam antibiotic cephalexin (CPX). Experiments were done using KSO and simulated sunlight. A face-centered central composite experimental design was used to analyze the effects of the solution pH and the PS concentration on the reaction, and to determine the optimized conditions that favor the CPX elimination.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen causing tuberculosis (TB) disease in humans. Intestinal microbiota facilitates food breakdown for energy metabolism and influences the immune response, maintaining mucosal homeostasis. Overall, HIV infection is associated with intestinal dysbiosis and immune activation, which has been related to seroconversion in HIV-exposed individuals. However, it is unclear whether microbiota dysbiosis is the cause or the effect of immune alterations and disease progression or if it could modulate the risk of acquiring the HIV infection.
