Immunoglobulin (Ig) replacement therapy (IgRT) consists of the administration of low-dose human polyclonal Igs for the treatment of primary and secondary hypogammaglobulinemia that are associated with recurrent infections and immune dysfunction. IgRT restores physiological antibody levels and induces an immunomodulatory effect by strengthening immune effector cells, thus reducing infections. Here, we describe the pharmacology of different Ig formulations with a particular focus on their mechanism of action as low-dose IgRT, including the direct anti-microbial effect and the immunomodulatory function.

The small Rho GTP-binding proteins are important cell morphology, function, and apoptosis regulators. Unlike other Rho proteins, RhoB can be subjected to either geranylgeranylation (RhoB-GG) or farnesylation (RhoB-F), making that the only target of the farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI). Mucin1 (MUC1), a glycoprotein associated with an aggressive cancer phenotype and chemoresistance, is aberrantly overexpressed in a subset of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Recent studies suggest that MUC1 plays a role in modulating cancer cell metabolism, but its role in regulating immunoflogosis in the tumor microenvironment remains poorly understood. In a previous study, we showed that pentraxin-3 (PTX3) can affect the immunoflogosis in the ccRCC microenvironment by activating the classical pathway of the complement system (C1q) and releasing proangiogenic factors (C3a, C5a).

Objective: Despite higher sperm DNA fragmentation may affect intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes, sperm selection protocols do not evaluate this parameter. Therefore, sperm's head birefringence has been suggested as an adjuvant of seminal processing to select viable sperm for couples with severe male factor. Considering men with normal seminal parameters may also curse with DNA fragmentation, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of sperm selection by birefringence on ICSI outcomes in couples with different infertility factors compared to those submitted to conventional sperm selection.

Objective: The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of autoantibodies to desmoglein 1 and desmoglein 3 detected by ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence in the diagnosis of oral pemphigus and to correlate the antibody titres with the severity of the disease.
Materials And Methods: We report a retrospective cohort study of 22 patients with oral pemphigus and 64 controls from a single tertiary centre. Data about histopathological examination, direct immunofluorescence, indirect immunofluorescence and ELISA were analysed.

An altered metabolism is involved in the development of clear cell - renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), and in this tumor many altered genes play a fundamental role in controlling cell metabolic activities. We delineated a large-scale metabolomic profile of human ccRCC, and integrated it with transcriptomic data to connect the variations in cancer metabolism with gene expression changes. Moreover, to better analyze the specific contribution of metabolic gene alterations potentially associated with tumorigenesis and tumor progression, we evaluated the transcription profile of primary renal tumor cells.

In a previous study, we reported the identification of Hemilipin, the first secreted heterodimeric phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) from Hemiscorpius lepturus scorpion venom and demonstrated its effective inhibition of all angiogenesis key steps in vitro and in vivo. Here, we aimed to characterize a second sPLA, Hemilipin2, from the same venom and to elucidate its antiangiogenic effect. Several classes of drugs have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and occurrence of arrhythmias potentially involved in sudden deaths in chronic users even at therapeutic doses. The study presented herein focuses on pathological changes involving the heart possibly due to methadone use. 60 cases were included in the study in total and were divided into three groups (therapeutic methadone users: 20 cases, recreational methadone users: 20 cases, and sudden death group in subjects who had never taken methadone: 20 cases).

Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are enzymes which specifically hydrolyze the sn-2 acyl ester bond of phospholipids producing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids. The secreted PLA2 (sPLA2) are the most common types of PLA2 purified from the snake venom, mammalian pancreatic juice and other sources.
