High expression of WDR1 in primary glioblastoma is associated with poor prognosis.

Primary glioblastoma always has a fatal outcome despite maximal therapy. Identification and validation of prognostic biomarkers and novel therapeutics will be potentially powerful to transform the care of glioblastoma patients. In this study, we constructed Affymetrix gene microarrays with 14 glioma samples to screen for genes with potential prognostic value by hieratical clustering, and 83 genes including WD-repeat containing protein 1 (WDR1) were filtered out.

Identification and verification of PRDX1 as an inflammation marker for colorectal cancer progression.

Chronic inflammation contributes to high risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Thus, discovering inflammation biomarkers for monitoring of CRC progression is necessary. In this study, we performed isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation-based proteomic assay on CRC tissues and paired normal mucosal tissues to identify key components in CRC pathogenesis.

Activation of α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Decreases On-site Mortality in Crush Syndrome through Insulin Signaling-Na/K-ATPase Pathway.

On-site mortality in crush syndrome remains high due to lack of effective drugs based on definite diagnosis. Anisodamine (Ani) is widely used in China for treatment of shock, and activation of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) mediates such antishock effect. The present work was designed to test whether activation of α7nAChR with Ani decreased mortality in crush syndrome shortly after decompression.

The molecular chaperone heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is highly conserved in eukaryotes and facilitates the correct folding, productive assembly and maturation of a diverse cellular proteins. In fungi, especially the most prevalent human fungal pathogen Candida albicans, Hsp90 influences development and modulates drug resistance. Here, we mainly explore the effect of non-Geldanamycin Hsp90 inhibitor HSP990 on the activity of fluconazole (FLC) against Candida albicans and investigate the underlying mechanism.

Clinical significance of urothelial carcinoma associated 1 in colon cancer.

This study aimed to investigate the expression levels of urothelial carcinoma associated 1 (UCA1) in cancer tissues and plasma of colon cancer patients, and evaluate its clinical significance. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to determine the expression levels of UCA1 in 80 pairs of colon cancer and adjacent normal tissues, plasma samples from 20 healthy controls, 20 colon cancer patients before and after tumor removal. The relationships between UCA1 expression and clinical features and overall survival were analyzed.

Glutamine synthetase predicts adjuvant TACE response in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Background: Adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is associated with better outcome and reduced tumor recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between glutamine synthetase (GS) expression and survival of HCC patients after postoperative adjuvant TACE.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 554 HCC patients in two independent cohorts who underwent curative resection.

Objective: To explore the association between polymorphism of the norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene rs2242446 and rs5669 loci and depression in Chinese Han population.

Methods: A case-control study was carried out, the gene types and allele distributions of NFT gene rs2242446 and rs5569 loci in 302 depression patients and 302 healthy controls were detected by Taqman SNP genotyping technology.

Results: The gene types and allele frequency distributions of NFT gene rs2242446 and rs5569 loci had significant differences between case group and control group (rs2242446, x(2)=26.

16S rRNA gene sequencing is a non-culture method of defining the specific bacterial etiology of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an acquired respiratory tract infection following tracheal intubation. The most common hospital-acquired infection among patients with acute respiratory failure, VAP is associated with a mortality rate of 20-30%. The standard bacterial culture method for identifying the etiology of VAP is not specific, timely, or accurate in identifying the bacterial pathogens.

Development of a self-assessment tool for measuring competences of obstetric nurses in rooming-in wards in China.

Introduction: To provide high-quality nursing care, a reliable and feasible competency assessment tool is critical. Although several questionnaire-based competency assessment tools have been reported, a tool specific for obstetric nurses in rooming-in wards is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to develop a competency assessment tool for obstetric rooming-in ward nurses.
