Serum immunoglobulins and complement factors were investigated retrospectively in 35 splenectomised (n = 28) and autoreplanted (n = 7) patients following trauma. The main deficiency of the immune system following splenectomy was a reduction in the concentrations of serum IgM, C3, and Factor B with normal IgG, IgA and C4 values. These changes were not correlated with the time elapsed after splenectomy.

Peripheral blood and tumor-infiltrating T lymphocyte subsets in BERH-2 hepatoma-bearing rats were investigated by indirect immunofluorescence stain and flow cytometry. Based on the above study, comparison of immunoregulatory action and inhibitory effect on the tumor were also done in vivo among several groups which received IFN, IL-2, 5-FU, combined immunotherapy (CI) or immunochemotherapy (IC), respectively. The results indicated that T lymphocyte subsets in hepatoma-bearing rats would undergo changes which were closely related with tumor growth and metastasis.

A reversed-phase HPLC system with 88% methanol in 1 M ammonium acetate buffer pH 5.35 as the mobile phase on an ODS column was used to analyse pheophorbides a, a', b, b' and pyropheophorbides a and b. Pyropheophorbides a and b were found in samples obtained from silkworm excrement but not from spinach leaves though the preparation methods used were the same.

The nongenomic membrane receptor-mediated mechanism is an important but not fully explored facet in the action of steroid hormones. In the present study the action of glucocorticoid on nerve cell membrane was studied using isolated and superfused coeliac ganglion preparations by an intracellular electrophysiological technique. Glucocorticoid hyperpolarized the membrane potential of guinea pig ganglion neurons in vitro with a latency of less than 2 min.

A simplified method for the preparation of wheat germ agglutinin(WGA)-Sepharose 4B by coupling highly purified WGA, prepared by improved affinity chromatography, with BrCN activated Sepharose 4B in a solution of high carbonate buffer is described. The amount of WGA linked to Sepharose 4B was 82.40% (3.

Administration of polyvinyl alcohol containing hydrocortisone (F-PVA) to rats twice caused a rapid increase of plasma glucocorticoids (GCs) around 30 micrograms/dl for 3 days. This rise led to decrease of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in rat liver cytosol and spleen cells 1 h post F-PVA and remained at low level for more than 10 days. Two hours after administration of hydrocortisone 5 mg/100 g b.

Rats were randomized into splenectomised and sham-splenectomised groups (n = 15 in each). W256 carcinosarcoma cells were implanted in the subcutis of each animal 10 days after splenic operation. T cell subsets of peripheral blood were evaluated serially before and after the operation.

This paper describes a device designed for controlling the size of cell-enveloping microcapsules. Microcapsule size varied inversely with air flow rate; an empirical formula was obtained relating packing density to microcapsule diameter. Microcapsule loading and cell distribution in the microcapsule are discussed.

T cell subsets in rat peripheral blood and spleen were analysed longitudinally by flow cytometer and MAbs in a murine intrahepatic implanted tumor model. In the peripheral blood. OX-19+ cells (pan T cell) and W3/25+ cells (Th/i cell) were reduced with the tumor growth in hepatoma bearing rats, giving a significant difference as compared with the control group.

The kinetics of erythrocyte haemolysis in blood samples taken from normal and burned rabbits were investigated by nephelometry. The rate of haemolysis decreased significantly from 30 min to 2 h after severe burns, when many abnormal red cell forms were found in blood films; there was also an increase in osmotic fragility. The results confirm that the rate of haemolysis is strongly related to structural changes of the red cell membrane but do not parallel osmotic fragility.

beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (beta-ELI) was measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 36 acute head-injured patients and 12 patients without head injury as controls. The mean level of beta-ELI in CSF of controls, mild cerebral contusions, and severe cerebral contusion patients were 51.9 +/- 5.

This paper introduces the clinical use of coagglutination as a method for the rapid detection of pneumococcal antigens in patients with community-acquired pneumonia and compares it with the sputum Gram stain and culture methods. Among 105 patients, 50 (48%) were diagnosed as having pneumococcal pneumonia by at least one of the three methods. Of 95 sputa tested, 44 (46%) were found to be positive by the coagulation test, 26 (27%) by Gram staining and only 16 (17%) by the bacterial culture method.

Numerous organic silver salts have been tested against a virulent strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa which had been deliberately applied to the scalded tails of mice and deeper scald wounds on the backs of rabbits. Silver pipemidate was found to be more effective than silver sulphadiazine in treating these infected wounds.
