Background: Ultra-short-term heart rate variability (HRV) analysis (< 5 min) has been extensively growing in the field of exercise performance for autonomic assessment. However, the validation of ultra-short-term HRV was unclear in the recovery period of exercise. This study aimed to elucidate the agreement between ultra-short-term HRV (0-30 s, 0-1 min, 0-2 min, 0-3 min, 0-4 min) and standard short-term HRV (5 min) and to explore the optimal recording duration under rest and post-exercise conditions.

Praxis (Bern 1994)

September 2015

2 The Second Department of Special Treatment II, Eastern Hepatobilary Surgery Hospital, Second Military Medical College, Shanghai, China.

Pyogenic hepatic abscesses are rare, and fatal if untreated. Recent progresses in diagnostic and interventional radiology facilitated their management. However, abscesses located in the caudate lobe are still a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, especially to general internists, who tend to overtreatment.

Objective: The present study aims to elucidate whether or not scoring deformed cartilages reduces postoperative pain after the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum patients.

Methods: A total of 46 pectus excavatum patients for whom the Nuss procedure was conducted were included in the study. The patients were categorized into two groups, depending on whether or not the supplementary maneuver of scoring deformed cartilages was performed in addition to the Nuss procedure.

Background: Calcipotriol/betamethasone dipropionate combination in a non-alcoholic, lipophilic gel formulation (two-compound gel) has previously been demonstrated as a safe and effective treatment for scalp psoriasis in Caucasian, Hispanic/Latino, and Black/African American populations. The purpose of this randomized, investigator-blinded, active-controlled, 4-week study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the two-compound gel in Chinese subjects with scalp psoriasis.

Method: Subjects were randomized in a 1 : 1 ratio to four weeks of treatment with either the two-compound gel once daily or calcipotriol scalp solution twice daily.

The occurrence of aortic regurgitation (AR) attributable to Behçet's disease is rare, but it brings extraordinary complexity to surgical intervention due to the high risk of postoperative morbidity as the result of valve dehiscence or pseudoaneurysms caused by fragile aortic structures and inflamed tissue. The high rate of prosthetic valve detachment after aortic valve replacement is one of the most serious consequences of aortic regurgitation in Behçet's disease, which results in severe aortic annular destruction, presenting a big challenge to cardiac surgeons. Under this condition, a conventional surgical technique is necessary to be modified for improving postoperative prognosis of patients.

Department of Etiologic Biology, Second Military Medical College, Shanghai 200433, China.

This paper reports the rectification results of the tribe aedini mosquitoes formerly recorded in China, using the classification system proposed by Reinert during the recent years. Among all the 171 species of Chinese aedini mosquitoes examined, 160 species could be included in the new classification system. The other 11 species were listed in traditional taxonomic status for further study.

Objective: To explore the effect of 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME2) and arsenic trioxide (As2O3) on the apoptosis related gene expression in multiple myeloma cell line CZ-1.

Methods: Total RNA was isolated from CZ-1 cells which had been treated with 2ME2 and As2O3 at an apoptosis-inducing concentration and reverse-transcribed into a cDNA probe labeled with Bio-16-dUTP, and then hybridized it with a microarray containing up to 96 key genes involved in apoptosis. The gene expression profile of the 2ME2 and As2O3 treated CZ-1 cells were analyzed with GEArray Analyzer software.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility about the cloning, expression and characterization of multifunctional anticoagulated peptide.

Methods: We designed a construct using glutathione S-transferase (GST) as a protein vector, fused via a cleavable linker to an antithrombotic peptide of 31 amino acids. The peptide was designed to include three inhibitory regions: (1) the Lys-Gly-Asp (KGD) amino acid sequence to prevent fibrinogen binding to platelets; (2) a part of fibrinopeptide A, an inhibitor of thrombin; and (3) the tail of hirudin, a potent direct antithrombin.

Department of Thorac Cardiorasc Surgery, Changhai Hospital, Second Military Medical College.

From May 1995 to October 1996, 20 patients with mitral valve disease underwent the maze procedure for chronic atrial fibrillation and mitral valve replacement or mitral valvuloplasty. Epicardial mapping data demonstrated that the large macrorecurre flutter circuit was located in left atrium (14/20) and complex fibrillation in right atrium (18/20) of the majority of patients. No early death occurred.

Dynamic changes of contents of beta-endorphin, leu-enkephalin and oxytocin in plasma were determined in seventeen fracture patients with shock, fascial space syndromes, or infection postoperation. There was significant rise of contents in beta-endorphin and leu-enkephalin but not in oxytocin after trauma, Of those accompanied by infection postoperation, beta-endorphin and oxytocin remained high. The contents of beta-endorphin and enkephalin decreased gradually in non-infectious group, but were still higher than normal.
