Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and places a significant burden on society. Neuroinflammation is closely associated with the pathophysiology of depression. Increasing evidence suggests that astrocytes, as the most abundant glial cells in the brain, are involved in the occurrence and development of depression due to morphological abnormalities and dysfunction.

S-nitrosylation (SNO) modification, a nitric oxide (NO)-mediated post-translational modification (PTM) of proteins, plays an important role in protein microstructure, degradation, activity, and stability. Due to the presence of reducing agents, the SNO modification process mediated by NO derivatives is often reversible and unstable. This reversible transformation between SNO modification and denitrification often influences the structure, activity, and function of proteins.

Mandibular tongue-shaped flap reconstruction for lip defects following lip tumor surgery.

J Craniomaxillofac Surg

December 2024

Department of Dermatology, Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China. Electronic address:

Lip defects due to lip tumor surgery need proper reconstruction to preserve their function. Traditional methods offer various options for lip repair, but each has limitations, and can lead to deformity, asymmetry, or functional impairment. This study aimed to investigate the clinical application of mandibular tongue-shaped flap reconstruction for postoperative defects following lip tumor surgery.

Background: The effectiveness of immune checkpoint therapy highlights the need to understand abnormal programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), especially when treatments fail, or resistance develops. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) signaling is crucial for regulating programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Our study focuses on interferon gamma receptor 2 (IFNGR2), an essential part of the IFN-γ pathway, and its impact on malignant traits in NPC.

To compare the efficacy and safety of gecacitinib (also known as jaktinib) with hydroxyurea (HU) in treating myelofibrosis (MF) patients. In this multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial (ZGJAK016), intermediate- or high-risk primarily JAK inhibitor naïve MF patients were assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either gecacitinib (100 mg twice a day, BID) or HU (500 mg BID). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with ≥35% reduction in spleen volume (SVR35) from baseline at week 24.

Article Synopsis
  • Colon cancer, traditionally understood through direct spread and standard metastasis methods, is seeing increased focus on the role of perineural invasion (PNI) in its progression, though research on PNI mechanisms and biomarkers remains limited.
  • The study used bioinformatics to identify genes associated with PNI in colon cancer, specifically analyzing AGRN, which was linked to tumor growth and invasion through gene enrichment analysis.
  • Results showed that AGRN is overexpressed in colon cancer with PNI and correlates with poorer patient outcomes, suggesting it plays a critical role in PNI development and progression by enhancing both tumor and neural cell activity.*

Cervical cancer (CC) remains a leading cause of female cancer mortality globally. Immunogenic cell death (ICD) influences the tumor microenvironment (TME) and adaptive immune responses. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) within the TME suppress anti-tumor immunity and contribute to CC progression.

Purpose: Maresin 1 (MaR1) is a specialized pro-resolving mediator with anti-inflammatory properties that promotes tissue repair. This study aims to investigate the molecular involvement of MaR1 in protecting against sepsis-induced acute liver injury (SI-ALI).

Methods: In vivo, a murine SI-ALI model was established using the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) paradigm, providing a system in which the mechanistic functions of MaR1 could be tested.

Gram-negative bacteria infections in diabetic wounds are complicated to control, leading to amputation and even death in severe cases. There is an urgent need to develop effective therapeutic strategies. In recent years, electrospinning has attracted much attention due to its resemblance to extracellular matrix (ECM), which can regulate local cellular proliferation, migration, differentiation, etc.

The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling pathway exerts a dual role in oncogenesis, acting as a suppressor in healthy and early stage neoplastic tissues while promoting malignancy and metastasis in advanced cancers. Tumor hemorrhage further exacerbates TGF-β-mediated metastasis by up-regulating its expression. Here, a coagulation-targeting peptide (A15)-decorated TGF-β inhibitor nanomedicine (A15-LY-NPs) was developed.

A Modular Approach to Obtain HER2-Targeting DM1-Loaded Nanoparticles for Gastric Cancer Therapy.

ACS Omega

December 2024

Gastroenteric Medicine and Digestive Endoscopy Center, The Second Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin Province 130041, China.

Antibody-based tumor-targeting nanomedicines, despite their high efficacy, present significant challenges in preparation and long-term storage. We introduce a novel approach for the synthesis of durable, ready-to-use, antibody-coupled nanomedical drugs. Our research centers on the development of HER2-targeting DM1-loaded nanoparticles for gastric cancer treatment using a modular methodology.

Recent studies underscore the anti-inflammatory role of SIRT1; however, its levels during inflammatory states remain ambiguous. We synthesized relevant studies up to 20 March 2024 to evaluate the relationship between SIRT1 and inflammation, using data from three major databases. Employing a random-effects model, we analyzed both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, calculating weighted mean differences (WMDs) for pooled effect sizes.

Mycetoma is a granulomatous disease of subcutaneous tissue that is caused by different species of aerobic filamentous bacteria (actinomycetoma) or fungi (eumycetoma). Mycetoma treatment depends on the causative pathogen, and it mainly consists of antimicrobial interventions or surgery. Aspergillus terreus is an etiologic agent of invasive aspergillosis and a rare cause of eumycetoma that is common in central and southern China.

Placental development is a multifaceted process critical for a fruitful pregnancy, reinforced by a complex network of molecular pathways that synchronize trophoblast migration, differentiation, and overall placental function. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the key signaling pathways, such as Wnt, Notch, TGF-β, and VEGF, which play fundamental roles in trophoblast proliferation, invasion, and the complicated process of placental vascular development. For instance, the Wnt signaling pathway is essential to balance trophoblast stem cell proliferation and differentiation, while Notch signaling stimulates cell fate decisions and invasive behavior.

Deubiquitinase USP37 enhances the anti-HIV-2/SIV ability of the host restriction factor SAMHD1.

J Virol

December 2024

Center of Infectious Diseases and Pathogen Biology, Institute of Virology and AIDS Research, Key Laboratory of Organ Regeneration and Transplantation of The Ministry of Education, The First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China.

The Vpx protein encoded by HIV-2/simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) can antagonize the restriction of the host intrinsic restriction factor, SAMHD1, in nondividing cells by promoting its polyubiquitination and subsequent degradation, thereby facilitating viral replication and immune evasion. However, the role of deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) in the dynamics of virus and host remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that DUB USP37 significantly reverses the Vpx-mediated degradation of SAMHD1 in various HIV-2/SIV subtypes by interacting with SAMHD1 and removing its ubiquitin chains.
