The objective of this pilot in vivo animal study was to determine the effects of postoperative radiation using brachytherapy on bone and soft tissue healing in mandibles reconstructed with the endoprosthesis. In this review, we examine the trends in cancer incidence, mortality and survival in the last decade, using published data from the Singapore Cancer Registry in the period 1998 to 2009. While overall cancer incidences have remained stable, overall cancer mortality rates have declined for both genders. Thus, it is not surprising that there was an improvement in cancer survival.

Identification of autism spectrum disorders using the Child Behavior Checklist in Singapore.

We tested the ability of the 2001 CBCL syndromes to discriminate among 86 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), 117 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-Inattentive type, 426 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-Hyperactive-Impulsive or Combined type, 200 clinically referred children who did not receive a diagnosis, and 436 typically-developing children in a community sample. The Withdrawn/Depressed, Social Problems, and Thought Problems syndromes significantly discriminated the ASD group from the four other groups. An ASD scale, constructed from nine CBCL items, demonstrated moderate to high sensitivity (68 to 78%) and specificity (73 to 92%).

Ranulas are mucus extravasation phenomenon formed after trauma to the sublingual gland or mucus retention from the obstruction of the sublingual ducts. There are various methods for treating ranulas, including marsupialization with or without open packing, excision of ranula with or without removal of sublingual gland, and laser excision and vaporization of ranula. The authors present a case series report on the use of carbon dioxide laser treatment for ranula and a literature review of cases treated using carbon dioxide laser.

Modular endoprosthesis for mandibular reconstruction: a preliminary animal study.

Effect of EDTA with and without surfactants or ultrasonics on removal of smear layer.

This study compared the in vitro efficacy of Smear Clear (Sybron Endo, CA), a 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution with surfactants, to 17% EDTA, with and without the use of ultrasonics, in removal of the smear layer. Seventy-five extracted teeth, randomly distributed into 5 test groups, were prepared by using ProFile rotary instruments (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and subjected to different final irrigating regimes; group A, 1% sodium hypochlorite; group B, 17% EDTA; group C, 17% EDTA with ultrasonics; group D, Smear Clear; and group E, Smear Clear with ultrasonics. Samples were examined under the scanning electron microscope and scored for debris and smear layer removal.

Altogether, 135 postmenopausal Chinese female subjects aged 55 years and older participated in the study, and their bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry.

Since its inception in 2001, the numbers of page-views, monthly visits and repeat visitors have increased markedly.

During the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Singapore from 1 March to 11 May 2003, various national prevention and control measures were undertaken to control and eliminate the transmission of the infection. During the initial period of the epidemic, public communication was effected through press releases and media coverage of the epidemic. About a month into the epidemic, a public education campaign was mounted to educate Singaporeans on SARS and adoption of appropriate behaviours to prevent the spread of the disease.
