Background: Robust evidence on whether diagnostic discordance exists between lumbar osteoporosis detected by quantitative computed tomography (QCT) vs. dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is still lacking. In this study involving a relatively large prospective cohort of older men (aged > 60 years) and postmenopausal women, we assessed lumbar QCT-derived volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and DXA-derived area BMD and evaluated their predictive performance for prevalent vertebral fracture (VF).

Importance: Digestive system neoplasms (DSNs) are the leading cause of cancer-related mortality with a 5-year survival rate of less than 20%. Subjective evaluation of medical images including endoscopic images, whole slide images, computed tomography images, and magnetic resonance images plays a vital role in the clinical practice of DSNs, but with limited performance and increased workload of radiologists or pathologists. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in medical image analysis holds promise to augment the visual interpretation of medical images, which could not only automate the complicated evaluation process but also convert medical images into quantitative imaging features that associated with tumor heterogeneity.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a highly heterogeneous disease, and about 30%-40% of patients will develop relapsed/refractory DLBCL. In this study, we aimed to develop a gene signature to predict survival outcomes of DLBCL patients based on the autophagy-related genes (ARGs). We sequentially used the univariate, least absolute shrinkage and selector operation (LASSO), and multivariate Cox regression analyses to build a gene signature.

Choriocarcinoma (CC) tends to metastasize early into various organs and may exhibit peculiar clinical behaviors specific to metastases. Although chemotherapy has revolutionized the survival of most patients, the mortality rate remains high in cases at ultra high-risk, which may be associated with multiple organs involvement and intolerable toxicity resulting from combination chemotherapy. Here, we illustrate a 46-year-old woman patient with oral and lung lesions whose clinical and morphological heterogeneity misled the preliminary diagnosis.

Background: It is generally believed that hypercapnia and hypocapnia will cause secondary injury to patients with craniocerebral diseases, but a small number of studies have shown that they may have potential benefits. We assessed the impact of partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide (PaCO) on in-hospital mortality of patients with craniocerebral diseases. The hypothesis of this research was that there is a nonlinear correlation between PaCO and in-hospital mortality in patients with craniocerebral diseases and that mortality rate is the lowest when PaCO is in a normal range.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by dysregulated host response to infection. Immunosuppression is an important factor of secondary infection in the late state of sepsis, including multi-drugs resistant bacteria, which ultimately leads to the death of patients. The aim of this article was to help clinical staffs better manage patients with sepsis, improve long-term survival rate of the patients, and reduce their re-hospitalization rate by reviewing the relationship between sepsis-induced immunosuppression and multi-drugs resistant bacteria through three aspects: the mechanism of sepsis-induced immunosuppression, the mechanism of antibiotic resistance and the relationship between sepsis-induced immunosuppression and secondary infections.
