Background: Since the withdrawal of cerivastatin, statin-fibrate combination therapy has been questioned in China due to safety concern. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of fenofibrate as an add-on in patients with dyslipidemia despite receiving statin therapy.

Methods: This was a prospective, multi-center, single-arm, open-label study conducted in Chinese dyslipidemia patients with high CV risk.

Adefovir dipivoxil is commonly used for treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients. We present a case of acquired Fanconi syndrome and hypophosphatemic osteomalacia in a patient with chronic hepatitis B who had been treated with ADV for 8 years. A 41-year-old man complained of severe bilateral hypochondrium pain and lower limb weakness, and he had the diagnosis of bone metastasis cancer or multiple myeloma.

High-intensity focused ultrasound therapy in combination with gemcitabine for unresectable pancreatic carcinoma.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect and safety of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy combined with gemcitabine in treating unresectable pancreatic carcinoma.

Methods: The 45 patients suffering from pancreatic carcinoma were randomized into two groups. The patients in the experimental group (n=23) received HIFU in combination with gemcitabine and those in the control group (n=22) received gemcitabine alone.

Effect of lentivirus-mediated integrin αVβ3-shRNA on tumor growth of mice with lung cancer xenografts.

Objective: To study the effect of lentivirus-mediated integrin αVβ3-shRNA on tumor growth of mice with lung cancer xenograft.

Methods: Lung cancer tissue, paracancer tissue and normal tissue were collected and integrin αVβ3 expression was detected; BALB/c nude mice were selected, divided into integrin αVβ3 knockdown group (KD group) and negative control group (NC group), and inoculated with cells stably infected by integrin αVβ3-shRNA lentivirus and cells stably infected by negative control-shRNA lentivirus, respectively, the growth of tumor tissue was continuously observed, and the number of apoptosis cells as well as the expression of angiogenesis, apoptosis and invasion genes in tumor tissue were detected.

Results: mRNA content and protein content of integrin αVβ3 in lung cancer tissue were significantly higher than those in paracancer tissue and normal tissue; increasing trend of tumor tissue volume of KD group was weaker than that of NC group, and tumor volume at various points in time of KD group was lower than that of NC group; mRNA contents and protein contents of VEGF, FGF, EGF, Bcl-2, MMP-9, MMP-12 and MMP-13 in tumor tissue of KD group were lower than those of NC group, and apoptosis index as well as mRNA content and protein content of Bax were higher than those of NC group.

The lipid lowering medication, fenofibrate (FF), is a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα) agonist, possessing beneficial effects for type 2 diabetic nephropathy (DN). We investigated whether FF can prevent the development of type 1 DN, and the underlying mechanisms. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin in C57BL/6J mice.

Diminished but Not Abolished Effect of Two His351 Mutants of Anthrax Edema Factor in a Murine Model.

Edema toxin (ET), which is composed of a potent adenylate cyclase (AC), edema factor (EF), and protective antigen (PA), is one of the major toxicity factors of Bacillus anthracis. In this study, we introduced mutations in full-length EF to generate alanine EF(H351A) and arginine EF(H351R) variants. In vitro activity analysis displayed that the adenylyl cyclase activity of both the mutants was significantly diminished compared with the wild-type EF.

Unlabelled: The treatment outcomes of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and transformed acute myelogenous leukemia (tAML) remain very unsatisfactory. We designed a combination of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-mismatched hematopoietic stem cell microtransplantation (MST) with chemotherapy for patients with MDS and tAML and evaluated its effects and toxicity. Patients were between 13 and 79 years old.

Tigecycline Inhibits Glioma Growth by Regulating miRNA-199b-5p-HES1-AKT Pathway.

Tigecycline is a broad-spectrum, first-in-class glycylcycline antibiotic currently used to treat complicated skin infections and community-acquired pneumonia. However, there is accumulating evidence showing that tigecycline has anticancer properties. In this study, we found tigecycline could inhibit cell proliferation by inducing cell-cycle arrest, but not apoptosis in glioma.

Subject-driven titration of biphasic insulin aspart 30 twice daily is non-inferior to investigator-driven titration in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with premixed human insulin: A randomized, open-label, parallel-group, multicenter trial.

Aims/introduction: The present study was to compare the efficacy and safety of subject-driven and investigator-driven titration of biphasic insulin aspart 30 (BIAsp 30) twice daily (BID).

Materials And Methods: In this 20-week, randomized, open-label, two-group parallel, multicenter trial, Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by premixed/self-mixed human insulin were randomized 1:1 to subject-driven or investigator-driven titration of BIAsp 30 BID, in combination with metformin and/or α-glucosidase inhibitors. Dose adjustment was decided by patients in the subject-driven group after training, and by investigators in the investigator-driven group.

Nemonoxacin has potent activity against gram-positive, but not gram-negative clinical isolates.

Objectives: The aim of the current study was to analyze the susceptibility of gram-positive and -negative clinical isolates to a novel des-F(6)-quinolone (nemonoxacin) and other selected antimicrobial agents.

Materials And Methods: Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by the agar plate dilution method according to NCCLs.

Results: Nemonoxacin exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than other quinolones, such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin, and other antimicrobials when tested against selected gram-positive organisms.

Expression of OPG, RANKL, and RUNX2 in rabbit periodontium under orthodontic force.

This study aims to investigate the expression changes of RANKL, RUNX2, and OPG in rabbit periodontal tissues under orthodontic force and explore its effect on the remodeling of periodontal tissues. A total of 16 specific pathogen-free rabbits were used in this study. The maxillary appliance was worn on the right (experimental) side, and the appliance-free left side was used as the control.

The protective effects of Masson pine pollen aqueous extract on CCl4-induced oxidative damage of human hepatic cells.

Objective: We observed the effects of Masson pine pollen aqueous extracts (MPPAE) on CCl4-induced oxidative damage of the human hepatic cell line L-02.

Methods: We created an in vitro model of oxidative liver damage by treating L-02 human hepatic cells with 40 mmol/L CCl4. Effects of different concentrations of MPPAE on cell proliferation, morphology, and change of functional indexes were observed after addition of CCl4.

[Clinical Analysis of 4 AML Patients Aged Over 80 Years Treated with Chemotherapy Combined with Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem Cell Infusion].

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of MA (mitoxantrone and cytarabine) regimen chemotherapy combined with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized family related HLA-haploidentical donor peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell (G-PBHSC) infusion for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients aged over 80 years.

Methods: Four elderly patients with AML were treated in Chinese Second Artillery General Hospital from August 2008 to September 2013. The proportion of male to female was 1 : 3 and the median age 83 (80-85) years.

[Laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease-related cough: a report of 70 cases].

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-related cough.

Methods: Retrospective review of 70 patients with GERD-related cough who received laparoscopic fundoplication in GERD Department of The Second Artillery General Hospital during June 2008 to June 2013 was carried out. GERD-related symptoms (reflux, heartburn, cough, expectoration, globus sensation and hoarseness) before and after surgery were compared through questionnaire, and the symptom remission rate (preoperative symptom score - postoperative symptom score)/preoperative symptom score×100%) was calculated.

Syntaxin 1A mediates isoflurane but not hypoxia preconditioning-induced alleviation of hypoxia-reoxygenation injury in rat cardiomyocytes.

Preconditioning with ischemia/hypoxia (IPC/HPC) or clinically available volatile anesthetics such as isoflurane (Iso-PC) could activate cardioprotective signaling pathways, thereby reducing myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury. However, their molecular targets remain elusive. We herein investigated the roles of syntaxin 1A (Stx-1A) in cardiomyocyte protection induced by HPC and Iso-PC.

An efficient strategy for establishing a model of sensorineural deafness in rats.

Ototoxic drugs can be used to produce a loss of cochlear hair cells to create animal models of deafness. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no report on the establishment of a rat deafness model through the combined application of aminoglycosides and loop diuretics. The aim of this study was to use single or combined administration of furosemide and kanamycin sulfate to establish rat models of deafness.

The Technical Efficiency of Earthquake Medical Rapid Response Teams Following Disasters: The Case of the 2010 Yushu Earthquake in China.

Purpose: Performance assessments of earthquake medical rapid response teams (EMRRTs), particularly the first responders deployed to the hardest hit areas following major earthquakes, should consider efficient and effective use of resources. This study assesses the daily technical efficiency of EMRRTs in the emergency period immediately following the 2010 Yushu earthquake in China.

Methods: Data on EMRRTs were obtained from official daily reports of the general headquarters for Yushu earthquake relief, the emergency office of the National Ministry of Health, and the Health Department of Qinghai Province, for a sample of data on 15 EMRRTs over 62 days.

Effect of peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin on the expression of NF-κB and TNF-α in multiple organs of rats with severe acute pancreatitis.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin on the expression levels of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in multiple organs of rats with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the following groups: Sham-operated (C), SAP model (SAP), saline lavage (SL), intravenous ulinastatin (IU) and peritoneal lavage with ulinastatin (UL). The SAP model was induced by the retrograde infusion of 5% sodium taurocholate into the biliopancreatic ducts of the rats.
