VZV IE4 downregulates cellular surface MHC-I via sequestering it to the Golgi complex.

Cell Mol Life Sci

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection downregulates surface major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) expression and retains MHC-I in the Golgi complex of infected cells. However, the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. The VZV IE4 protein is a multifunctional protein that is essential for VZV infection.

The complex pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD) requires comprehensive understanding and multi-pronged interventions for communication between nerve cells. Despite new developments in nanotechnology in the treatment of PD, in-depth exploration of their biological effects, in particular, the specific mechanisms of inflammation inhibition are lacking. Herein, using the stable cascade catalysis channel formed by polydopamine (PDA), imidazole groups, and Cu ions, a microgel system comprising functional monomers [superoxide dismutase (SOD) with double bonds, PDA, 2-methacryloyloxy ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), and Cu ions] is proposed for managing PD.

Background: Anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) antibody combined with chemotherapy simultaneously is regarded as the standard treatment for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by current clinical guidelines. Different immune statuses induced by chemotherapy considerably affect the synergistic effects of the chemo-anti-PD-1 combination. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the optimal timing of combination treatment administration.

Background: Volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) may have the highest overall performance for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) treatment of inoperable early-stage NSCLC. However, in centers lacking the VMAT technique, the dynamic conformal arc therapy (DCAT) technique is potentially the best option for small and rounded NSCLC-SBRT. Therefore, we will comprehensively analyze the advantages of the DCAT versus the other techniques except VMAT in terms of dosimetry, plan complexity, delivery time, γ-passing rates and the interplay effect.

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) (AML-MSCs) have been identified to play a significant role in AML progression. The functions of MSCs mainly depend on their paracrine action. Here, we investigated whether AML-MSCs functioned in AML cells by transferring METTL14 (Methyltransferase 14) into AML cells via exosomes.

Metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), is a long non-coding RNA localized in the cell nucleus, known for its multifunctional roles, including potential involvement in spermatogenesis. This study investigates the mechanism by which MALAT1 dysregulation contributes to the pathogenesis of idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (iNOA). We analyzed MALAT1 levels in two gene expression profiling datasets comprising patients with obstructive azoospermia (OA) who have normal spermatogenesis and 13 patients with iNOA.

Advances in B Cell Targeting for Treating Muscle-Specific Tyrosine Kinase-Associated Myasthenia Gravis.

Immunotargets Ther

December 2024

Department of Neuroimmunology, Henan Institute of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, People's Republic of China.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a typical autoimmune disease of the nervous system. It is characterized by skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue due to impaired neuromuscular junction transmission mediated by IgG autoantibodies. Muscle-specific receptor tyrosine kinase-associated MG (MuSK-MG), a rare and severe subtype of MG, is distinguished by the presence of anti-MuSK antibodies; it responds poorly to traditional therapies.

Background: Pleural invasion (PI) is considered to be an adverse prognostic factor in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the prognostic roles of PI in pathologic (p)T3-4N0M0 NSCLC remain controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of PI in patients with pT3-4N0M0 NSCLC.

Background: Current studies have shown inconsistent results regarding the impact of baseline alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels on the prognosis of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients who undergo 177Lu-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) radioligand therapy (PRLT). Therefore, a comprehensive meta-analysis is needed to clarify the implications.

Methods: This study was carried out in full compliance with the PRISMA protocol 2020, and a comprehensive search was conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for published literature up to April 1st, 2024.

Th9 and Th17 Cells in Human Ulcerative Colitis-Associated Dysplastic Lesions.

Clin Med Insights Oncol

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology & Nutrition, University Hospital of North Norway, University of Tromsø, Tromsø, Norway.

Background: Inflammation is the most important deriving force for the development of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) through the Inflammation-Pretumor dysplasia-CAC sequence. T helper (Th) subsets Th9 and Th17 cells can potentially stimulate inflammation in the ulcerative colitis (UC). Therefore, Th9 and Th17 cells may play a promoting role in the colitis-associated dysplasia (CAD).

Purpose: This study utilized a group-based dual-trajectory model to identify distinct dyadic quality of life (QoL) trajectories among young to middle-aged stroke couples and to analyze the predictive factors influencing these trajectories.

Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted with 168 young to middle-aged stroke couples. Assessments at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months post-discharge included patients' functional recovery (modified Rankin Scale) and stroke couples' depression, anxiety, stress, benefit finding, social support, couple relationship, and QoL (12-item short-form health scale).

To explore the impact of air pollution on hospital visits for mental and behavioral disorders among residents in an industrial area in Henan Province from 2016 to 2021. Daily outpatient visits data for mental and behavioral disorders, as well as air pollutants and meteorological data during the same period, were collected from Angang General Hospital in Angang Industrial Zone at Anyang City between January 2016 and December 2021. A generalized additive model was used for time-series analysis to examine the relationship between daily average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO), fine particulate matter (PM), inhalable particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O) with a lag of 0 to 7 days on the number of visits for mental and behavioral disorders among residents.

In recent years, epigenetic modifications have been strongly linked to tumor development, with histone modifications representing a key epigenetic mechanism. In addition, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play a critical role in regulating cancer-related pathways. The abnormal interaction between histone modifications and ncRNAs, both pivotal epigenetic regulators, has been widely observed across various cancer types.

Radiation therapy is indispensable in medical practice but often causes adverse effects on healthy tissues, necessitating the search for natural radioprotectors. This study investigates the protective effect of Biochanin A (BCA) against gamma radiation-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage in Swiss albino mice. Gamma radiation, a potent ionizing source, generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage cellular biomolecules, including DNA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how dyadic coping affects the mental health of stroke survivors and their spouse caregivers, highlighting both individual and mutual influences.
  • Conducted in China with 224 dyads, it used various scales to analyze data, focusing on both actor and partner effects within the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.
  • Results show that effective dyadic coping can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression for both partners, while poor coping strategies may lead to increased mental health issues, emphasizing the need for targeted dyadic interventions.
