NADH-cytochrome b5 oxidoreductase (Ncb5or) in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is involved in fatty acid metabolism, and Ncb5or(-/-) mice fed standard chow (SC) are insulin-sensitive but weigh less than wild type (WT) littermates. Ncb5or(-/-) mice develop hyperglycemia at about age 7 weeks due to β-cell dysfunction and loss associated with saturated fatty acid accumulation and manifestations of ER and oxidative stress. Here we report that when Ncb5or(-/-) mice born to heterozygous mothers fed a high fat (HF) diet continue to ingest HF, they weigh as much as SC-fed WT at age 5 weeks.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has a high incidence of cervical micrometastases and sometimes metastasizes contralaterally because of the rich lymphatic intercommunications relative to submucosal plexus of oral cavity that freely communicate across the midline, and it can facilitate the spread of neoplastic cells to any area of the neck consequently. Clinical and histopathologic factors continue to provide predictive information to contralateral neck metastases (CLNM) in OSCC, which determine prophylactic and adjuvant treatments for an individual patient. This review describes the predictive value of clinical-histopathologic factors, which relate to primary tumor and cervical lymph nodes, and surgical dissection and adjuvant treatments.

With the progress of cancer treatment, fertility preservation has become an urgent requisition. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) and antagonist (GnRH-ant) have been used to protect fertility for these patients. However, studies showed that although GnRH-a and GnRH-ant had a comparable down-regulating effect on the pituitary, GnRH-ant could not preserve ovarian function.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is reportedly involved in chronic diabetic complications such as diabetic nephropathy, but changes of the RAS in diabetic skin remain unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of angiotensin (Ang) II and its type 1 (AT1) and type 2 (AT2) receptors in diabetic skin tissues, and explore the relationship between the local RAS and pathological changes of diabetic skin. Our results showed that thinning of epidermis, degeneration of collagen, fracture of dermal layer, and atrophy/disappearance of subcutaneous fat were observed in diabetic skin.

Cysteine-rich protein 61 (Cyr61) selectively binds heparin and insulin-like growth factors and mediates a variety of biological actions, including cell adhesion, differentiation, proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and tumorigenesis. Cyr61 is also a prognostic factor for tumor progression and survival of individuals with various types of tumors. This study investigated the relationship between the expression level of Cyr61 and clinicopathological features, as well as the prognostic significance of Cyr61 expression in human salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify and characterize side population cells from three human pancreatic cancer cell lines: SW1990, Capan-2, and BxPC-3.
  • Using flow cytometry, researchers sorted these cells and assessed various traits such as growth, resistance to chemotherapy, and ability to invade and form tumors in mice.
  • Results showed that side population cells exhibited cancer stem cell-like characteristics, including higher proliferation, greater resistance to the drug gemcitabine, and significant tumor-forming potential, suggesting a link to the aggressiveness of pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

To determine how UL54-specific siRNA affects virus replication and protection of host cells, we examined virus titer and the activity of the cells at 12 hours, 24 hours, 36 hours, 48 hours, 60 hours and 72 hours after process of RNAi, including: four UL54-specific siRNAs and the positive/negative control siRNAs synthesized in vitro by chemical processes. The Vero cells were transfected with siRNAs using lipofectamine 2000 followed by infection by HSV-II. Our studies reveal that the groups with UL54-specific siRNA decreased significantly in virus titer at 12-24 hours, and only slightly decreased after that; groups with UL54-specific siRNA had higher OD values shown by MTT colorimetric assay than blank cells and survived better; R2 and R4 groups had lower virus titer and better survival than other groups.
