Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the first-line treatment for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), but 20-40% of patients do not respond well to UDCA. We aimed to develop and validate a prognostic model for the early prediction of patients who nonresponse to UDCA. This retrospective analysis was conducted among patients with primary biliary cholangitis(N = 257) to develop a predictive model for early-stage nonresponse to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the genetic etiology in an infertile patient presenting with consistently elevated progesterone levels.

Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from the patient's blood sample and subjected to whole-genome sequencing (NGS) using the Illumina NovaSeq platform. Bioinformatic analyses were conducted to identify single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and insertion-deletion mutations (Indels) potentially associated with the patient's clinical phenotype.

Background: Our previous study demonstrated that temperature-related microwave ablation (MWA) can safely modulate growth plates of piglets' vertebrae. Therefore, this study is designed to investigate the effects of different temperatures on chondrocyte viability and the underlying molecular mechanisms in vitro.

Methods: Following a 10-minute treatment at different temperatures (37 °C, 40 °C, 42 °C, 44 °C, 46 °C, 48 °C, and 50 °C), CCK-8 assay was used to examine the viability of ATDC5 cells at 12 h.

To compare the efficacy and safety of gecacitinib (also known as jaktinib) with hydroxyurea (HU) in treating myelofibrosis (MF) patients. In this multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial (ZGJAK016), intermediate- or high-risk primarily JAK inhibitor naïve MF patients were assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either gecacitinib (100 mg twice a day, BID) or HU (500 mg BID). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with ≥35% reduction in spleen volume (SVR35) from baseline at week 24.

Zhongguo Xiu Fu Chong Jian Wai Ke Za Zhi

December 2024

Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Kunming Yunnan, 650504, P. R. China.

Objective: To establish a finite element model of the knee joint based on coronal plane alignment of the knee (CPAK) typing method, and analyze the biomechanical characteristics of different types of knee joints.

Methods: The finite element models of the knee joint were established based on CT scan data of 6 healthy volunteers. There were 5 males and 1 female with an average age of 24.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

December 2024

Department of General Surgery, Nujiang Prefecture People's Hospital, Nujiang, Yunnan, China.

Rationale: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a clinically rare tumor that predominantly occurs in females and presents with nonspecific symptoms, often resulting in misdiagnosis. While postoperative pathology remains the gold standard for diagnosis, accurate preoperative identification through various diagnostic methods is essential for effective treatment planning. To raise awareness of this condition, we present a case of a middle-aged male diagnosed with LAMN.

The global incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) is rising. Localized PCa can be managed through surgical intervention or radiotherapy, but certain patients may experience recurrence or develop metastatic disease following localized treatment. Despite aggressive therapeutic approaches, the majority of metastatic patients with PCa will eventually progress to metastatic castration‑resistant PCa, with limited treatment alternatives and a dismal prognosis.

Background: Asplenia-type heterotaxy syndrome (HS) is rare and refers to visceral malposition and dysmorphism. It is associated with a high infant mortality rate due to cardiac anomalies, and related digestive endoscopic interventions are poorly understood. With the improved long-term prognosis of these individuals after modern cardiac surgery, intra-abdominal anomalies have become increasingly significant.

Background: Leveraging the radiomics information from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) primary lesion and brain metastasis (BM) to develop and validate a bimodal radiomics nomogram that can accurately predict epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) status.

Methods: A total of 309 NSCLC patients with BM from three independent centers were recruited. Among them, the patients of Center I were randomly allocated into the training and internal test cohorts in a 7:3 ratio.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between oxygen saturation levels (SpO2) and in-hospital mortality in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF), revealing that optimal SpO2 levels are not clearly defined across different guidelines.
  • It was found that a median SpO2 between 96-98% correlates with lower mortality rates, while levels below 96% or above 98% are associated with higher mortality risks, particularly for patients with specific conditions like cancer and COPD.
  • The research concludes that maintaining SpO2 within the optimal range can potentially improve survival outcomes for ARF patients, suggesting the need for clearer clinical targets.

Background/aims: Studies have shown the significance of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the development of malignant tumors, including cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). However, the molecular mechanisms through which the lncRNA SNHG3 contributes to CCA development remain unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to investigate SNHG3's role and possible processes in CCA.

Heliyon

November 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, 374 Dianmian Avenue, Wuhua District, Kunming, 650101, Yunnan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses the growing interest in extracellular vesicles (EVs) for drug development, emphasizing the benefits of plant-derived EVs over animal-derived ones, such as cost-effectiveness and low immune response.
  • It highlights the need for more research in this area since current studies on plant-derived EVs are sparse and not well-organized.
  • The review aims to summarize key aspects like isolation methods and therapeutic potential while identifying challenges in developing these EVs and suggesting future research pathways.
