Background: Zinner syndrome (ZS) is a congenital malformation characterized by a triad of mesonephric (Wolffian) duct dysplasia, first identified by Zinner in 1914. The classical presentation of ZS includes unilateral renal hypoplasia or dysplasia, ipsilateral seminal vesicle cysts, and obstruction of the ejaculatory duct. This case presents a rare variant of the syndrome, where an ejaculatory duct cyst is observed instead of the typical ipsilateral seminal vesicle cyst.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to see if histogram analysis of amide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) MRI images can predict complete pathological regression (pCR) in locally advanced rectal cancer patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy.
  • One hundred forty-five patients were evaluated, showing that those with pCR had distinct APTw and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) characteristics compared to non-pCR patients, which could help identify treatment response.
  • The findings suggest histogram analysis could be a valuable method for predicting how patients will respond to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, with a high accuracy rate in the combined model used in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disrupts gut microbiota and reduces the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), worsening kidney damage.
  • The study explored whether Astragalus polysaccharide (APS), a component of Chinese medicine, can improve gut microbiota and SCFA production to slow CKD progression in mice.
  • Findings showed that APS supplementation lowered harmful substances in the blood, improved kidney health, increased the presence of SCFA-producing bacteria, and elevated G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) linked to kidney function.

  • Endometriosis is an estrogen-related condition linked to inflammation and altered fat metabolism, which may increase cardiovascular risks; its relationship with the Cardiometabolic Index (CMI) needs further exploration beyond traditional BMI assessments.
  • The objective of the study was to analyze how CMI correlates with the risk of endometriosis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) covering participants aged 20-54 with endometriosis history.
  • Results indicated that higher CMI levels corresponded to a greater likelihood of developing endometriosis, a trend that held true even after accounting for various demographic and lifestyle factors such as age and socioeconomic status.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between preoperative C-Reactive Protein to Albumin Ratio (CAR) and negative postoperative outcomes in older patients facing non-cardiac surgeries.
  • It involved analyzing data from 2,511 patients across seven centers, focusing on complications classified as Clavien-Dindo grade III and other associated morbidities.
  • Results indicate that higher CAR levels correlate with increased risks of severe complications and overall morbidity, suggesting that CAR can be a useful indicator for surgical risk in older adults.

Psoriasis, an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory skin disease, is primarily diagnosed through clinical assessment. Currently, specific markers for the accurate diagnosis and prediction of psoriatic disease are lacking. Here, we employed a three-step designed study to perform untargeted metabolomics, with the aim of identifying candidate biomarkers for psoriasis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) affects about 40% of diabetic patients, leading to severe health issues like end-stage renal disease and significant economic costs globally; symptoms include protein leakage in urine and increased cardiovascular risk.
  • - Current treatments for DKD primarily manage hypertension and blood sugar levels but do not cure the disease or tackle its root causes; medications like SGLT2 inhibitors and ACE inhibitors are commonly used.
  • - Recent research emphasizes mitochondrial dysfunction as a critical factor in DKD progression, suggesting that targeting mitochondrial health could improve treatment outcomes by reducing oxidative stress and promoting better energy production in kidney cells.

Signal Transduct Target Ther

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, Shanghai Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Zhongshan Hospital and Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • EphrinB2 is crucial for promoting the formation of blood and lymph vessels during embryo development and plays a significant role in cardiac lymphangiogenesis after a heart attack (myocardial infarction, MI).
  • The study found that EphrinB2 helps prevent heart remodeling and dysfunction post-MI by activating pathways involved in lymphangiogenesis, with its absence leading to worsening heart conditions.
  • Mechanistically, EphrinB2 enhances the proliferation and migration of lymphatic endothelial cells, boosts the activity of a specific transcription factor (ISL1), and its effects are diminished when the VEGFR3 pathway is inhibited, highlighting its importance in cardiac recovery after MI.
