For last months, humanity has faced a formidable unknown enemy, which is presented as a new coronavirus infection. Despite the fact that the causative agents of new diseases appear at a certain frequency and that the virus SARS-CoV-2 has certain common properties with its predecessors, at the moment we are dealing with a new unknown pathogenesis of the development of severe complications in patients with risk factors. A final understanding of pathological process mechanisms is the goal of the scientific community.

Patients on anticoagulant treatment are constantly increasing, with an estimated prevalence in Italy of 2% of the total population. The recent spreadout of the COVID-19 pandemic requires a re-organization of Anticoagulation Clinics to prevent person-to-person viral diffusion and continue to offer the highest possible quality of assistance to patients. In this paper, based on the Italian Federation of Anticoagulation Clinics statements, we offer some advice aimed at improving patient care during COVID-19 pandemic, with particular regard to the lockdown and reopening periods.

Pulmonary embolism (PE)-related death is often a component of the primary outcome in venous thromboembolism (VTE) clinical studies. Definitions for PE-related death vary widely, which may lead to biased risk estimates of clinical outcomes, thereby affecting both internal and external validity of study results. We here provide a standardized definition of PE-related death and propose guidance for classification and reporting of the cause of death for clinical studies in VTE.

Glutamate (Glu) excitotoxicity, which accompanies brain ischemia or traumatic brain injury, is the leading mechanism of neuronal death. In the present work, we studied the effects of the peptides HFRWPGP (ACTHPGP), KKRRPG, and PyrRP on the survival of cultured cortical neurons on the background of excitotoxic effect of Glu (100 µM). Biochemical (MTT/WST) and morphometric analyzes showed that, depending on the dose, ACTHPGP and KKRRPGP protect neurons from the cells death, while PyrRP, conversely, enhances it.

Knowledge of the distribution of risk factors for superficial thrombosis (SVT) in low-risk population is fundamental to improve the prevention of the disease in each individual and high-risk settings of patients. Background: The safety and efficacy of nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) have been established in randomized controlled trials, but limited data are available on their use in clinical practice across geographical regions.
Methods: In the international RE-COVERY DVT/PE observational study (enrollment January 2016 to May 2017), we sought to characterize the patient population and describe the prescribed anticoagulant. Patient characteristics and anticoagulants administered after objective diagnosis of VTE were recorded at the baseline visit and again at hospital discharge or at 14 days after the diagnosis, whichever was later.

Skull base tumors arising from the middle cranial fossa and invading of the infratemporal fossa (ITF) and middle cranial fossa are challenging for neurosurgeons, because of complex anatomy and critical neurovascular structure involvement. The first pioneering ITF approaches resulted in invasive procedures and carried a high rate of surgical morbidity. However, the acquisition of deep anatomical knowledge, and the development operative skills and reconstruction techniques allowed surgeons to achieve total or near total resection of many ITF lesions with a low morbidity rate.

Results obtained showed that infection with HCMV prevented the death of THP-1 cells treated with DOX in both active and latent forms of infection. In the presence of mTOR inhibitors (rapamycin and Torin2), the sensitivity of the infected cells to DOX was restored. Rapamycin inhibited the expression of the HCMV protein IE1-p72 and increased sensitivity to DOX.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), also known as nanowhiskers, have recently gained much attention due to their biodegradable nature, advantageous chemical and mechanical properties, economic value and renewability thus making them attractive for a wide range of applications. However, before these materials can be considered for potential uses, investigation of their toxicity is prudent. Although CNC exposures are associated with pulmonary inflammation and damage as well as oxidative stress responses and genotoxicity in vivo, studies evaluating cell transformation or tumorigenic potential of CNC's were not previously conducted.

We hypothesized that redox reprogramming of 15-lipoxygenase (15-LOX) during the generation of pro-ferroptotic signal 15-hydroperoxy-eicosa-tetra-enoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (15-HpETE-PE) modulates ferroptotic endurance. Here, we have discovered that inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)/NO-enrichment of activated M1 (but not alternatively activated M2) macrophages/microglia modulates susceptibility to ferroptosis.
