Evolution produced a large variety of rhabdomeric photoreceptors in the compound eyes of insects. To study effects of morphological and electrophysiological differences on signal generation and modulation, we developed models of the cockroach and blow fly photoreceptors. Dopamine (DA) is the critical neurotransmitter involved in the unconscious control of muscle tone and body posture. We evaluated the general motor capacities and muscle responses to postural disturbance in three conditions: normal DA level (wild-type rats, WT), mild DA deficiency (WT after administration of α-methyl-p-tyrosine-AMPT, that blocks DA synthesis), and severe DA depletion (DAT-KO rats after AMPT). The horizontal displacements in WT rats elicited a multi-component EMG corrective response in the flexor and extensor muscles.

The nigrostriatal system composed of the dorsal striatum and the substantia nigra (SN) is highly involved in the control of motor behavior. Various extremal and pathological conditions as well as social isolation (SI) may cause an impairment of locomotor function; however, corresponding alterations in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway are far from full understanding. A product of the immediate early gene Arc (Activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein or Arc protein) of retroviral ancestry resides in the genome of all tetrapods for millions of years and is expressed endogenously in neurons. It is a well-known protein, very important for synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation. Omnipresent microplastics (MPs) in marine ecosystems are ingested at all trophic levels and may be a vector for the transfer of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) through the food web. We fed rotifers polyethylene MPs (1-4 µm) spiked with seven congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and two congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). In turn, these rotifers were fed to cod larvae from 2-30 days post-hatching (dph), while the control groups were fed rotifers without MPs.

Electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of olfaction are of fundamental and practical interest for many reasons. In the field of neural technologies, olfactory-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent an approach that could be useful for neurorehabilitation of anosmia, dysosmia and hyposmia. While the idea of a BCI that decodes neural responses to different odors and/or enables odor-based neurofeedback is appealing, the results of previous EEG investigations into the olfactory domain are rather inconsistent, particularly when non-primary processing of olfactory signals is concerned.

Objective: To identify features in the compensatory mechanisms of sleep regulation in response to acute sleep deprivation after chronic sleep restriction in rats.
Material And Methods: Male Wistar rats 7-8 months old underwent 5-day sleep restriction: 3 h of sleep deprivation and 1 h of sleep opportunity repeating throughout each day. Six-hour acute total sleep deprivation was performed at the beginning of daylight hours on the 3rd day after sleep restriction.

Neuromodulating the locomotor network through spinal cord electrical stimulation (SCES) is effective for restoring function in individuals with gait deficits. However, SCES alone has limited effectiveness without concurrent locomotor function training that enhances activity-dependent plasticity of spinal neuronal networks by sensory feedback. cAMP is a key regulatory molecule that controls many important processes in the retina, including phototransduction, cell development and death, growth of neural processes, intercellular contacts, retinomotor effects, and so forth. The total content of cAMP changes in the retina in a circadian manner following the natural light cycle, but it also shows local and even divergent changes in faster time scales in response to local and transient changes in the light environment. Changes in cAMP might also manifest or cause various pathological processes in virtually all cellular components of the retina.

Vertebrate rods and cones operate over a wide range of ambient illumination, which is provided by light adaptation mechanisms regulating the sensitivity and speed of the phototransduction cascade. Three calcium-sensitive feedback loops are well established in both rods and cones: acceleration of the quenching of a light-activated visual pigment and cGMP synthesis by guanylate cyclase, and increased affinity of ion channels for cGMP. Accumulating evidence suggests that the molecular mechanisms of light adaptation are more complex.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a widespread metabolic disorder that results in podocyte damage and diabetic nephropathy. Previous studies demonstrated that TRPC6 channels play a pivotal role in podocyte function and their dysregulation is associated with development of different kidney diseases including nephropathy. Here, using single channel patch clamp technique, we demonstrated that non-selective cationic TRPC6 channels are sensitive to the Ca store depletion in human podocyte cell line Ab8/13 and in freshly isolated rat glomerular podocytes.

To simultaneously treat phantom limb pain (PLP) and restore somatic sensations using peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), two bilateral transradial amputees were implanted with stimulating electrodes in the proximity of the medial, ulnar and radial nerves. Application of PNS evoked tactile and proprioceptive sensations in the phantom hand. Both patients learned to determine the shape of invisible objects by scanning a computer tablet with a stylus while receiving feedback based on PNS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
