The management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains largely unresolved due to our limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the pathology and the challenges in accurately phenotyping this heterogeneous syndrome. A paradigm shift is required to personalise care and unify our approaches to HFpEF patients for future clinical trials. Accordingly, we propose a staging classification for HFpEF based on the identification of the involved cardiac chambers by echocardiography.

This study delves into the intricate molecular and cellular mechanisms by which vitamin D3 influences OTM. Vitamin D3 is identified as a critical regulator in bone metabolism, enhancing osteoblast activity and bone formation while also modulating osteoclast quantity and RANKL expression, essential for the remodeling of the alveolar bone.

Transcranial Photosensitizer-Free Laser Treatment of Glioblastoma in Rat Brain.

Over sixty years, laser technologies have undergone a technological revolution and become one of the main tools in biomedicine, particularly in neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. Glioblastoma is the most lethal form of brain cancer, with very limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. In this study on rats, we demonstrate that glioblastoma (GBM) growth can be suppressed by photosensitizer-free laser treatment (PS-free-LT) using a quantum-dot-based 1267 nm laser diode.

The study of microstructural features and chemical composition of sintered samples was carried out using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively.

To achieve the goal, the studies determined soil pH, the content of skeletal fraction, basal respiration, and performed the acidimetric assessment of CO. The research program aimed to investigate the peculiarities of plant communities' formation in areas with different degrees of revitalization and investigate the influence of soil cover on plant associations.

Multicenter phase 2 study of intrapleural nivolumab in patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer and pleural effusion.

About 40% of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) developed pleural effusions at some time during the course of their disease. Preliminary results from our Phase 2 multicentre clinical trial (Cohort 1) demonstrated the safety of intrapleural nivolumab in cancer patients. In Cohort 2 we assessed the preliminary efficacy and toxicity of intrapleural instillation of the nivolumab in patients with metastatic NSCLC and large pleural effusion requiring evacuation.

Catalytic filtration: efficient C-C cross-coupling using Pd-salen complex-embedded cellulose filter paper as a portable catalyst.

A new approach has been developed for environmentally friendly C-C cross-coupling reactions using bi-functional Pd(ii)-salen complex-embedded cellulose filter paper (FP@Si-Pd-Salen-[IM]OH). A Pd(ii)-salen complex bearing imidazolium [OH]moieties was covalently embedded into a plain filter paper, then used as an efficient portable catalyst for the Heck, Suzuki, and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions under environmentally friendly conditions the filtration method. The catalytic filter paper properties were studied by EDX, XPS, TGA, ATR, XRD, and FESEM analyses.

Role of the Synergistic Interactions of Environmental Pollutants in the Development of Cancer.

There is a growing awareness that the large number of environmental pollutants we are exposed to on a daily basis are causing major health problems. Compared to traditional studies that focus on individual pollutants, there are relatively few studies on how pollutants mixtures interact. Several studies have reported a relationship between environmental pollutants and the development of cancer, even when pollutant levels are below toxicity reference values.

Carbamazepine, phenytoin, and oral anticoagulants: Drug-drug interaction and clinical events in a retrospective cohort.

Background: Carbamazepine and phenytoin are potent inducers of enzymes that metabolize oral anticoagulants.

Objectives: To determine the clinical impact of drug-drug interactions between these anticonvulsants and oral anticoagulants, and whether they affect the treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) or vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

The true incidence of subacute thyroiditis, caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, is probably considerable since it is often masked by more dramatic affection of the respiratory system. This report presents two female patients who developed de Quervain's thyroiditis after COVID-19 disease.

Benefit-Risk of Rivaroxaban for Extended Thromboprophylaxis After Hospitalization for Medical Illness: Pooled Analysis From MAGELLAN and MARINER.

Background Thromboprophylaxis extended after hospital discharge in medically ill patients currently is not recommended by practice guidelines because of uncertainty about the benefit for preventing major or fatal thromboembolic events, and the risk of bleeding. Methods and Results We assessed the benefit and risk of thromboprophylaxis with rivaroxaban 10 mg once daily extended for 25 to 45 days after hospitalization for preventing major thromboembolism in medically ill patients using the pooled data in 16 496 patients from 2 randomized trials, MARINER (Medically Ill Patient Assessment of Rivaroxaban Versus Placebo in Reducing Post-Discharge Venous Thrombo-Embolism Risk) and MAGELLAN (Multicenter, randomized, parallel-group efficacy and safety study for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in hospitalized medically ill patients comparing rivaroxaban with enoxaparin). The data from the MARINER trial were pooled with the data from the MAGELLAN trial in patients who were free of thrombotic or bleeding events up to the last dose of enoxaparin/placebo and who continued in the outpatient phase of thromboprophylaxis.

A crosstalk established between tumor microenvironment and tumor cells leads to contribution or inhibition of tumor progression. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are critical cells that fundamentally participate in modulation of the tumor microenvironment, and have been reported to be able to regulate and determine the final destination of tumor cell. Conflicting functions have been attributed to the activity of MSCs in the tumor microenvironment; they can confer a tumorigenic or anti-tumor potential to the tumor cells.

A physician survey of perioperative neuraxial anesthesia management in patients on a direct oral anticoagulant.

Background: The perioperative management of patients taking a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) who require a high-bleed-risk surgery and/or neuraxial anesthesia is uncertain. We surveyed clinician practices relating to DOAC interruption and related perioperative management in patients having high-bleed-risk surgery with neuraxial anesthesia, and assess the suitability of a randomized trial of different perioperative DOAC management strategies.

History of the E.I. Martsinovsky Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine: research on malaria and leishmaniasis.

This review presents the 100-year history of the Martsinovsky Institute of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine in Moscow, Russia, starting with its foundation and early activities, and also describes the impact of its leading scientists, some of whom became internationally known. The institute headed a network of nine tropical institutes in the various Soviet republics from the 1920s to 1990. The extensive body of literature on the history and research accomplishments of this institute has mainly been published in Russian; our goal here is to introduce these achievements and this expertise to the international scientific and medical community, focusing on malaria and leishmaniasis and the development of measures to control and monitor these diseases in the USSR.

Particular attention is paid to oxidative stress as one of the main causes for subfertility and male infertility, as well as the role of trace elements (zinc, selenium) and antioxidants (vitamins A, E and C) in the pathogenesis of male infertility and opportunities for the correction of fertility issues. Some aspects of COVID-19 influence on the problems of reproductive medicine, andrology and urology are highlighted.
