We studied the effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the defended body weight in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into three weight-matched groups: weight cyclers ( = 18), ad libitum-fed controls ( = 9), and maturity controls ( = 9). Cyclers underwent four rounds of 20% weight loss from 50% caloric restriction, each cycle followed by recovery to stable plateau weight on ad libitum feeding.

Corporatized Radiology: From Down Under to Over Here?

Curr Probl Diagn Radiol

December 2016

Department of Radiology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Electronic address:

In this article, we reflect on the current state of corporatized radiology, forces driving consolidation, and alternatives to corporatization that allow radiologists to maintain their autonomy while providing the highest level of care to their medical communities.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common complication of chronic renal disease. Clinical signs and symptoms tend to be severe and often are not controlled with medical measures. When medical therapy fails, parathyroidectomy becomes necessary.

Human furuncular myiasis caused by Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae).

J Med Entomol

Department of Health Services, Research and Development, Seattle Veteran's Administration Hospital, WA 98108, USA.

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Hermetia illucens (L.) has not been reported previously. We present a case of facultative furuncular myiasis characterized by infestation with a single larva in a woman from Seattle, WA, who had traveled to East Africa.

Glycoprotein IX is a relatively small (M(r) 20,000) surface glycoprotein of human platelets; one of three (Ib alpha, Ib beta, IX) polypeptide chains present in the glycoprotein Ib-IX complex that functions as the von Willebrand factor receptor and mediates platelet adhesion in the arterial circulation. Using a cDNA for human glycoprotein IX as the probe, clones were isolated from a human genomic library, and the genomic sequence for glycoprotein IX (3.2 kilobases) was determined.

Rotational thrombectomy in acute canine coronary thrombosis.

Int J Cardiol

January 1989

Division of Cardiology, Seattle Veterans Administration Hospital, University of Washington.

We have developed a mechanical thrombolytic catheter which defibrinates a fresh intra-arterial thrombus by wrapping fibrin about its rotating shaft. Defibrination results in liquification of the thrombus and reperfusion of the thrombotically occluded vessel. In this study, we employed this catheter-based approach in dogs with coronary thrombosis to simulate possible clinical use in acute myocardial infarction.

Endarterectomy was performed in vivo using a high speed rotating abrasive-tipped catheter device in 11 normal canine coronary arteries. The device is designed to remove atheromatous material from diseased arteries by the abrasive action of its rotating tip. It was operated percutaneously from a femoral approach using conventional angioplasty guiding equipment.

Genetically susceptible BALB/c and resistant C57BL/6 mice were infected with Leishmania major and the phenotypes of the responding cells in the draining lymph nodes and cutaneous lesions were analyzed. As early as 1 week, significantly increased numbers of L3T4+ cells as compared to Lyt-2+ cells were present in BALB/c mice lymph nodes (P less than 0.005).

PTCA is not technically possible in many patients with symptoms of coronary artery disease. In addition, atheroma is not physically removed by PTCA, and restenosis of the treated vessel is common. We have tested a new, rotating, abrasive-tipped angioplasty device in vivo in 13 atherosclerotic rabbit iliac vessels.

In this study, two prototype rotational devices were compared to balloon angioplasty in a canine model of subacute arterial thrombosis. Radiographic 2- to 8-day-old total thrombotic occlusions were produced in 30 canine femoral arteries. A high-speed rotating device with a cutting tip was used in 18 arteries.

Peptides and the control of meal size.

Diabetologia

March 1981

Departments of Psychology and of Medicine, The Diabetes Research Center, and The Regional Primate Research Center, University of Washington, USA.

There are now a large number of experiments demonstrating that peripheral administration of exogenous cholecystokinin or its synthetic analogue, CCK-8, reduces meal size in a number of species. The peptide interacts with other factors which influence satiety, and treatments thought to be effective in eliciting secretion of cholecystokinin have predictable effects on meal size. Cholecystokinin is effective in the genetically obese Zucker rat, obese rats with lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus, and subdiaphragmatically vagotomized rats.
