Six previously undescribed prenylated indole diketopiperazine alkaloids, talaromyines A-F (1-6), were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Talaromyces purpureogenus SCSIO 41517. Their structures including absolute configurations were elucidated on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic data including NMR, HR-ESI-MS, and electronic circular dichroism calculations, together with chemical analysis of hydrolysates. Compounds 1-5 represent the first example of spirocyclic indole diketopiperazines biosynthesized from the condensation of L-tryptophan and L-alanine.

Metal pollution in sediment from construction areas raises ecological and health concerns, yet source-based sediment pollution in Bangladesh remains understudied. Our investigation focused on fifteen locations in the Kohelia River and the coastal regions near the Matarbari projects (Matarbari Power Plant, Matarbari Deep Seaport), assessing metal concentrations' sources and impacts on ecology and human well-being. Sediment quality indices indicated high Cd and Cr contamination, with sites near Matarbari projects being the most polluted.

Red Noctiluca scintillans (RNS), a prominent species of dinoflagellate known for its conspicuous size and ability to form blooms, exhibits heterotrophic behavior and functions as a microzooplankton grazer within the marine food web. In this study, a straightforward technique referred to as the blue-green index (BGI) has been introduced for the purpose of distinguishing and discerning RNS from neighboring waters, owing to its pronounced absorption in the blue-green spectral range. This method has been applied across a range of satellite imagery, encompassing both multi-spectral and hyperspectral sensors.

An ethyl acetate extract of a marine actinomycete strain, SCSIO 53858, isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample in the South China Sea, exhibited anti-quorum-sensing (QS) activity against CV026. Guided by the anti-QS activity, a novel active compound was isolated and purified from the extract and was identified as 2,3-dimethoxycinnamic acid (2,3-DCA) through spectral data analysis. The haploid and diploid life-cycle phases of coccolithophores might have different vertical distribution preferences. Our extensive field studies demonstrate that saline groundwater inland and freshened groundwater offshore coexist in the same aquifer system in the Pearl River delta and its adjacent shelf. This counterintuitive phenomenon challenges the commonly held assumption that onshore groundwater is typically fresh, while offshore groundwater is saline. To address this knowledge gap, we conduct a series of sophisticated paleo-hydrogeological models to explore the formation mechanism and evolution process of the groundwater system in the inland-shelf systems.
