Prokaryotes play an important role in marine nitrogen and methane cycles. However, their community changes and metabolic modifications to the concurrent impact of ocean warming (OW), acidification (OA), deoxygenation (OD), and anthropogenic‑nitrogen-deposition (AND) from the surface to the deep ocean remains unknown. We examined here the amplicon sequencing approach across the surface (0-200 m; SL), intermediate (200-1000 m; IL), and deep layers (1000-2200 m; DL), and characterized the simultaneous impacts of OW, OA, OD, and AND on the Western North Pacific Ocean prokaryotic changes and their functional pattern in nitrogen and methane cycles.

Aims: Streptococcus parauberis is responsible for the development of streptococcosis in marine fish. The aim of the current study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of aquatic Strep. parauberis strains, thus establishing laboratory-specific epidemiological cut-off (COWT) values to distinguish wild-type (WT) and nonwild-type (NWT) strains.

Many aquatic products have been stored using superchilling technology, but rarely used for the storage of sturgeon fillets. In this study, we investigated the effects of protein oxidation, cathepsin, and various freezing temperatures on the quality of superchilled sturgeon fillets. Sensory evaluation results showed that the sensory attributes of superchilled (-3 °C) sturgeon fillets were acceptable three times longer (18 days) than samples stored at refrigeration temperatures (4 °C).

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in 23 seafood species widely consumed by the Korean population in the periods of 2005-2007, 2010-2011, and 2015-2017. The ΣPCB (sum of 82 PCB congeners) and ΣPBDE (sum of 19 PBDE congeners) concentrations in the seafood samples of 2015-2017 were 0.06-6.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, found frequently in oysters and other seafoods, is the most prevalent gastroenteritis-causing pathogen in Korea and other Asian countries. It is associated exclusively with the consumption of raw or improperly cooked contaminated seafood, especially oysters. In this study, we isolated and characterized 59 V.

Optofluidic single-cell genome amplification was used to obtain genome sequences from sub-micron cells collected from the euphotic and mesopelagic zones of the northwestern Sargasso Sea. Plankton cells were visually selected and manually sorted with an optical trap, yielding 20 partial genome sequences representing seven bacterial phyla. Two organisms, E01-9C-26 (), represented by four single cell genomes, and Opi.

Considerable attention has been paid to the occurrence and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments. However, the temporal variation and dissemination of ARGs in aquaculture environments and reared organisms need further study. This study investigated the abundance and diversity of ARGs and bacterial community in water source, shrimp pond water, sediment, and shrimps during the rearing period in Pearl River Delta region, South China.

The large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea, as one of the most economically important marine fish in China and East Asian countries, are facing the fatal attraction of various pathogens in recent years. Elucidation of the organism immunomodulatory mechanism of croaker response to pathogen infection is essential for the disease control. In present study, we reported for the first time the molecular characterization and expression analysis of two terminal complement components (TCCs) of croaker, Lc-C7 and Lc-C9.

Two sRNA libraries with or without poly(I:C) infection of large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea were constructed and sequenced using the high-throughput Illumina/Solexa deep sequencing technology. The high-throughput sequencing pipeline yielded 163,79,272 and 217,07,070 raw reads corresponding to 132,27,594 and 206,86,409 clean reads for the normal and infected libraries, respectively. Bioinfromatic analysis identified 534 miRNAs, of which, 158 miRNAs were known in miRBase 20.

A study was conducted to examine spinal deformities such as lordosis, scoliosis, and dwarfism in cod (Gadus morhua callaris L.) that were caught in the southern Baltic. The bone tissue of the spine and the muscle of the deformed cod were analyzed for concentration of macroelements (Sr, Ca and P) and toxic metals (Cd, Pb and Hg).

This study determined the concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) in flounder from the southern Baltic for the 1996-2003 period. Analysis of more than 200 samples was used to determine the following: (1) concentrations of Hg and As in muscle tissue of flounder from different regions of the southern Baltic; (2) concentrations of Hg in the muscle tissue of flounder of different sizes; and (3) temporal trends in the concentrations of trace metals during the 1996-2003 period. A positive correlation between fish length and Hg concentration was noted.

A 60 year (1948-2007) dataset gathered by Polish researchers working on the Vistula Lagoon fish assemblages and fisheries has shown this stressed transitional environment to be always been dominated by a few highly abundant fish species. During this period, the surrounding countries Poland and Russia (Kaliningrad) were transformed from centrally-planned economies with fixed prices to free market systems. The organization of the fishery evolved from one in which the majority of the fishing effort was expended by cooperatives, to one which was characterized by individual economic activity.

Production, respiration, egestion of faeces and excretion of ammonia were measured in competing early developmental stages of fish species (herring, smelt, perch and stickleback) to calculate their daily energy (food) requirements in the Vistula Lagoon, southern Baltic Sea. The highest consumption (per capita and per unit body mass) was found in perch and European smelt, and the lowest in herring. However, young herring had the highest contribution to the exploitation of food resources because of their dominance in the Lagoon.

PCBs measured in the muscle, liver, and gonads of cod collected from two locations in the southern Baltic were evaluated as total (summation operator PCBs), indicator (summation operator PCB(7)), and dioxin-like (summation operator DL-PCBs) concentrations. Gender, tissue lipid content, and collection site were important determinants of PCB levels. Irrespective of collection site, lipid-normalized summation operator PCBs, summation operator PCB(7), and summation operator DL-PCBs in females were the lowest in the muscle, and of similar levels in liver and gonads.
