Metal ions have been shown to play a critical role in amyloid-β (Aβ) neurotoxicity and plaque formation which are key hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Amyloid-β peptides can bind both copper and hemin and this interaction modulates the redox chemistry of these metals. The characterization of the binding of hemin through UV-Vis spectroscopic titration with Aβ(4-16) shows a significantly higher affinity than that with Aβ(1-16).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) encompasses a long continuum from a preclinical phase, characterized by neuropathological alterations albeit normal cognition, to a symptomatic phase, marked by its clinical manifestations. Yet, the neural mechanisms responsible for cognitive decline in AD patients remain poorly understood. Here, we posit that anosognosia, emerging from an error-monitoring failure due to early amyloid-β deposits in the posterior cingulate cortex, plays a causal role in the clinical progression of AD by preventing patients from being aware of their deficits and implementing strategies to cope with their difficulties, thus fostering a vicious circle of cognitive decline.

Complex microbiomes are part of the food we eat and influence our own microbiome, but their diversity remains largely unexplored. Here, we generated the open access curatedFoodMetagenomicData (cFMD) resource by integrating 1,950 newly sequenced and 583 public food metagenomes. We produced 10,899 metagenome-assembled genomes spanning 1,036 prokaryotic and 108 eukaryotic species-level genome bins (SGBs), including 320 previously undescribed taxa.

Limb apraxia is a higher-order motor disorder often occurring post-stroke, which affects skilled actions. It is assessed through tasks involving gesture production or pantomime, recognition, meaningless gesture imitation, complex figure drawing, single and multi-object use. A two-system model for the organisation of actions hypothesizes distinct pathways mediating praxis deficits via conceptual, 'indirect', and perceptual 'direct' routes to action.

Background: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) diagnostic criteria underestimate the complex presentation of semantic (sv) and logopenic (lv) variants, in which symptoms partially overlap, and mixed clinical presentation (mixed-PPA) and heterogenous profile (lvPPA +) are frequent. Conceptualization of similarities and differences of these clinical conditions is still scarce.

Methods: Lexical, semantic, phonological, and working memory errors from nine language tasks of sixty-seven PPA were analyzed using Profile Analysis based on Multidimensional Scaling, which allowed us to create a distributed representation of patients' linguistic performance in a shared space.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to post-acute cognitive symptoms, often described as 'brain fog'. To comprehensively grasp the extent of these issues, we conducted a study integrating traditional neuropsychological assessments with experimental cognitive tasks targeting attention control, working memory, and long-term memory, three cognitive domains most commonly associated with 'brain fog'. We enrolled 33 post-COVID patients, all self-reporting cognitive difficulties, and a matched control group (N = 27) for cognitive and psychological assessments.

The leafhopper genus Arboridia includes several species that feed on Vitis vinifera and cause leaf chlorosis. We report the first alien Arboridia infestation in Italy in 2021 in an Apulian vineyard. To confirm the taxonomic status of the species responsible for crop damage, and reconstruct its demographic history, we barcoded individuals from Apulia together with Arboridia spp.

The response of older people to the COVID-19 pandemic has attracted much attention as they are at increased risk of adverse outcomes. A longitudinal study has shown that improvement in global cognitive, executive and language functioning in healthy older adults enrolled at the University of the Third Age appears to play a protective role against emotional dysregulation and mood changes during the pandemic. To date, no study has examined emotional dysregulation through COVID-19-related images using facial electromyographic recordings in healthy older adults.

Growing evidence supports the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal in down-regulating food desire. Still, the neural bases of food craving down-regulation via reappraisal, as well as their degree of overlap vs specificity compared with emotion down-regulation, remain unclear. In this manuscript, we report on a novel architecture for the fabrication of highly sensitive multimodal tactile transducers, for the simultaneous detection of temperature and force. Such devices are based on a flexible Organic Charge Modulated Field Effect Transistor (OCMFET) coupled with a pyro/piezoelectric element, namely a commercial film of poly-vinylene difluoride (PVDF). The reduction of the channel length, obtained by employing a low-resolution vertical channel architecture, allowed to maximize the ratio between the sensing area and the transistor's channel area, a technological approach that allows to considerably enhance both temperature and force sensitivity, while at the same time minimize the sensor's dimensions.
