Background: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in early adults aged 25 to 44 years represents an important and unexpected cause of death. We assessed trends in SCD-related mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2020 among early adults to determine differences by sex, ethnoracial groups, urbanization, and census region.

Methods And Results: Mortality data were retrieved from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) data set from 1999 to 2020.

In the last three decades, ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) has become an evidence-based safe and efficacious treatment for managing the most common cardiac arrhythmia. In 2007, the first joint expert consensus document was issued, guiding healthcare professionals involved in catheter or surgical AF ablation. Mounting research evidence and technological advances have resulted in a rapidly changing landscape in the field of catheter and surgical AF ablation, thus stressing the need for regularly updated versions of this partnership which were issued in 2012 and 2017.

Article Synopsis
  • Despite advancements in emergency response, mortality rates from sudden cardiac arrest remain high due to gaps in bystander intervention and disparities in access to care.
  • Recent innovations like machine learning algorithms show promise in identifying at-risk individuals and recognizing emergencies but need to be integrated into public health strategies.
  • The authors suggest a system that combines data-driven technology with equitable public health approaches to enhance outcomes for sudden cardiac arrest.

Background: Daily weighing has been shown to help with weight management. In primary care, the majority of virtual visits will ask patients about their weight. However, little is known about whether patients, especially those in the Hispanic/Latino population, have access to a weight scale.

Background Diagnosis of shockable rhythms leading to defibrillation remains integral to improving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes. New machine learning techniques have emerged to diagnose arrhythmias on ECGs. In out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, an algorithm within an automated external defibrillator is the major determinant to deliver defibrillation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the long-term outcomes of ablation procedures targeting specific heart areas in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, focusing on recurrence and treatment efficacy.
  • A total of 1,633 patients were divided into two groups: those without comorbidities and those with cardiovascular issues, with recurrence rates after 10 years being higher in the comorbidity group (51% vs. 31%).
  • Despite these differences, both groups showed high success rates in remaining arrhythmia-free after repeat ablation, indicating the importance of addressing non-pulmonary vein triggers regardless of existing health conditions.

Background We compared the cognitive status and quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) or remaining on oral anticoagulation (OAC) after atrial fibrillation ablation. Methods and Results Cognition was assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) survey at baseline and follow-up. Consecutive patients receiving LAAO or OAC after atrial fibrillation ablation were screened, and patients with a score of ≤17 were excluded from the study.

Study Objectives: To evaluate weight loss with lorcaserin in persons with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Methods: This retrospective analysis evaluated weight loss of lorcaserin (10 mg twice daily) versus placebo in persons with obesity or overweight persons with OSA from a pooled database of three randomized, controlled trials. Primary end points were reductions in the baseline body weight of ≥5% and ≥10% at year 1 and overall weight change at year 1.
