The effect of the supplementation of diets containing low available P concentrations with low and supra-activities of an Eschericia coli 6-phytase was assessed using growing broiler chicks. Tests were made of the effects of altering nitrogen metabolism in zygote donor ewes on fetal development and expression of the gene encoding the type II insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF2R) following the transfer of ovine embryos cultured from these zygotes, either in the absence or presence of serum. Zygotes, recovered from superovulated ewes (32 on a urea supplemented (30 g urea/kg) diet (high N) and 32 on a control diet (low N)) 36 h after intrauterine AI using semen from a single sire, were cultured for 5 days in synthetic oviductal fluid (SOF) media either with BSA and amino acids (SOF-) or with 10% (v/v) steer serum (SOF+). In total, 166 embryos, including 30 in vivo controls, were transferred singly at day 6 post-AI to synchronous recipients and the products of conception recovered at day 125 of gestation.

The effects of osmotic and matric potential on mycelial growth, sclerotial production and germination of isolates of Rhizoctonia solani [anastomosis groups (AGs) 2-1 and 3] from potato were studied on potato dextrose agar (PDA) adjusted osmotically with sodium chloride, potassium chloride, glycerol, and matrically with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000. All isolates from AGs 2-1 and AG-3 exhibited fastest mycelial growth on unamended PDA (-0.4MPa), and growth generally declined with decreasing osmotic and matric potentials.

A general model is proposed for predicting the effects of subclinical pathogen challenges of different doses and virulence on the relative feed intake (RFI) of animals. The RFI is defined as the feed intake (FI, kg/d) of the animal challenged by a pathogen divided by its FI in the same state had it not been challenged. Actual FI can be predicted from the RFI and the animal's state.

This paper aims to identify the factors underlying farmers' propensity to participate in organic farming programmes in a Romanian rural region that confronts non-point source pollution. For this, we employ structural equation modelling with latent variables using a specific data set collected through an agri-environmental farm survey in 2001. Under Council Directive 1999/74/EC, minimum space allowances per laying hen range from 550 cm(2) in unfurnished cages to 1111 cm(2) in alternative housing, and to 40,000 cm(2) outdoors for free-range hens. In official reports on the welfare of laying hens, there is recognition that knowledge of their space requirements is inadequate. This experiment studied expression of behaviour, including spacing, in five groups of six and one group of five ISA Brown hens aged 21-33 weeks in an adjustable test pen providing 600, 2400, 4800, 7200, 9600, and 12,000 cm(2) floor area per hen.

The measurement of gas produced as a fermentation end product in vitro was correlated with absorbance as a measure of bacterial growth and was used as a rapid screening procedure to test the antimicrobial activity of certain essential oil and tannin secondary plant metabolites on gastrointestinal microorganisms from chickens. The assay was optimised using Clostridium perfringens and Lactobacillus fermentum, and tested in antimicrobial assays against C. perfringens; the minimum inhibitory concentration for each essential oil and condensed tannin was determined.

Autonomous replicating sequences are DNA elements that trigger DNA replication and are widely used in the development of episomal transformation vectors for fungi. In this paper, a genomic library from the mycorrhizal fungus Gigaspora rosea was constructed in the integrative plasmid YIp5 and screened in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for sequences that act as ARS and trigger plasmid replication. Background And Aims: Insect damage to plants leads to wound-activated responses directed to healing of damaged tissues, as well as activation of defences to prevent further insect damage. Negative cross-talk exists between the jasmonic acid-based signalling system that is activated upon insect attack and the salicylic acid-based system frequently activated following pathogen infection. There are selection methods available that allow the optimisation of genetic contributions of selection candidates for maximising the rate of genetic gain while restricting the rate of inbreeding. The reference ranges for blood copper (Cu) concentration used by SAC and the UK Veterinary Laboratories Agency have been developed for use with plasma only. Copper sequestration into the clot, primarily in the form of caeruloplasmin, means that serum Cu concentrations are significantly lower than plasma Cu concentrations in the same animals. This study assessed the interactive effects of carbohydrate type (fibre vs starch) and fatty acid (FA) supplementation (0% vs 6% calcium soaps of palm oil FA) on the post-fertilisation development of oocytes recovered from low and moderate body condition score (BCS) heifers. A secondary objective was to compare the FA composition of plasma to that of granulosa cells (GCs) and cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from these animals, and to relate these findings to the developmental potential of oocytes.
