Methods: Data were collected in September/October 2021-2023 in a monthly population-based survey on smoking and drinking behaviour of adults across Great Britain (N = 6311), weighted to match the overall population. We consider a numerical framework tailored to identifying optimal parameters in the context of modelling disease propagation. Our focus is on understanding the behaviour of optimisation algorithms for such problems, where the dynamics are described by a system of ordinary differential equations associated with the epidemiological SIRD model. Applying an optimise-then-discretise approach, we examine properties of the solution operator and determine existence of optimal parameters for the problem considered.

Objectives: A conservative oxygenation strategy is recommended in adult and pediatric guidelines for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome to reduce iatrogenic lung damage. In the recently reported Oxy-PICU trial, targeting peripheral oxygen saturations (Spo2) between 88% and 92% was associated with a shorter duration of organ support and greater survival, compared with Spo2 greater than 94%, in mechanically ventilated children following unplanned admission to PICU. We investigated whether this benefit was greater in those who had severely impaired oxygenation at randomization.

The diphyllobothriid tapeworm Dibothriocephalus dendriticus, one of the causative agents of the fish-borne zoonosis dibothriocephalosis, is mainly distributed in the Arctic/subarctic and temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, North America, and Asia), but also in the southern cone region of South America (Patagonia).
