Lanthanide (Ln) co-doped transition metal (TM) upconversion (UC) co-doped systems are being intensively investigated for their exciting applications in photonics, bioimaging, and luminescence thermometry. The presence of TM, such as Mo6 + /W6 +, Mn2 +, or Fe3 + determines significant changes in Ln UC emission, such as intensity enhancement, colour modulation, and even the alteration of the photon order. The current mechanism assumes a ground-state absorption/excited-state absorption (ESA/GSA) in TM-Yb dimer followed by direct energy transfer to Er/Tm excited states.

Patterning the consecutive Pd to Pd on PdGa surface via temperature-promoted reactive metal-support interaction.

Sci Adv

December 2022

Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China.

Atom-by-atom control of a catalyst surface is a central yet challenging topic in heterogeneous catalysis, which enables precisely confined adsorption and oriented approach of reactant molecules. Here, exposed surfaces with either consecutive Pd trimers (Pd) or isolated Pd atoms (Pd) are architected for PdGa intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) using reactive metal-support interaction (RMSI). At elevated temperatures under hydrogen, in situ atomic-scale transmission electron microscopy directly visualizes the refacetting of PdGa NPs from energetically favorable (013)/(020) facets to (011)/(002).

Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, ETH Zürich Leonhardstrasse 21 CH 8092 Zürich Switzerland

The thermal carburization of MoO nanobelts (nb) and SiO-supported MoO nanosheets under a 1 : 4 mixture of CH : H yields MoC-nb and MoC/SiO. Following this process by Mo K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals different carburization pathways for unsupported and supported MoO. In particular, the carburization of α-MoO-nb proceeds MoO, and that of MoO/SiO the formation of highly dispersed MoO species.

Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, ETH Zurich CH-8092 Zürich Switzerland

MgO is a promising solid oxide-based sorbent to capture anthropogenic CO emissions due to its high theoretical gravimetric CO uptake and its abundance. When MgO is coated with alkali metal salts such as LiNO, NaNO, KNO, or their mixtures, the kinetics of the CO uptake reaction is significantly faster resulting in a 15 times higher CO uptake compared to bare MgO. However, the underlying mechanism that leads to this dramatic increase in the carbonation rate is still unclear.

Plastic pollution is a major global challenge of our times, baring a potential threat for the environment and the human health. The increasing abundance of nanoplastic (NP) and microplastic (MP) particles in the human diet might negatively affect human health since they - particularly in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) - might surpass the intestinal barrier. To investigate whether ingested plastic particles cross the intestinal epithelium and promote bowel inflammation, mice were supplemented with NP or MP polystyrene (PS) particles for 24 or 12 weeks before inducing acute or chronic dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) colitis with continuous plastic administration.

Many in-memory computing frameworks demand electronic devices with specific switching characteristics to achieve the desired level of computational complexity. Existing memristive devices cannot be reconfigured to meet the diverse volatile and non-volatile switching requirements, and hence rely on tailored material designs specific to the targeted application, limiting their universality. "Reconfigurable memristors" that combine both ionic diffusive and drift mechanisms could address these limitations, but they remain elusive.

A microcalorimetric and microscopic strategy to assess the interaction between dietary fibers and small molecules.

Carbohydr Polym

July 2022

Department of Health Science and Technology, Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health, ETH Zurich, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland. Electronic address:

The interaction between small molecules and neutral soluble dietary fiber is one of the proposed mechanisms determining the bioavailability of these components in the small intestine. However, the weak nature of these interactions makes it difficult to find an analytical method sensitive enough to detect them. Here, we probed the molecular interaction between galactomannan, arabinoxylan, and β-glucan with gallic acid, cinnamic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, and acetaminophen, using advanced analytical methods, namely isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and in the form of gold-nanoparticles, transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

The nuclear pore complex (NPC) mediates nearly all exchanges between nucleus and cytoplasm, and in many species, it changes composition as the organism ages. However, how these changes arise and whether they contribute themselves to ageing is poorly understood. We show that SAGA-dependent attachment of DNA circles to NPCs in replicatively ageing yeast cells causes NPCs to lose their nuclear basket and cytoplasmic complexes.

In recent years, lipid bicontinuous cubic liquid-crystalline nanoparticles known as cubosomes have been under investigation because of their favorable properties as drug nanocarriers useful for anticancer treatments. Herein, we present organic/inorganic hybrid, theranostic cubosomes stabilized in water with a shell of alternate layers of chitosan, single strand DNA (model genetic material for potential gene therapy), and folic acid-chitosan conjugate (the outmost layer), coencapsulating up-converting Er and Yb codoped NaYF nanoparticles and daunorubicin. The latter acts as a chemotherapeutic drug of photosensitizing activity, while up-converting nanoparticles serve as energy harvester and diagnostic agent.

Amyloid-Templated Palladium Nanoparticles for Water Purification by Electroreduction.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

March 2022

Department of Health Sciences & Technology, ETH Zurich, Schmelzbergstrasse 9, 8092, Zurich, Switzerland.

Electrocatalysis offers great promise for water purification but is limited by low active area and high uncontrollability of electrocatalysts. To overcome these constraints, we propose hybrid bulk electrodes by synthesizing and binding a Pd nanocatalyst (nano-Pd) to the electrodes via amyloid fibrils (AFs). The AFs template is effective for controlling the nucleation, growth, and assembly of nano-Pd on the electrode.

In recent years, we have come to appreciate the astounding intricacies associated with the formation of minerals from ions in aqueous solutions. In this context, a number of studies have revealed that the nucleation of calcium sulfate systems occurs nonclassically, involving the aggregation and reorganization of nanosized prenucleation species. In recent work, we have shown that this particle-mediated nucleation pathway is actually imprinted in the resultant micrometer-sized CaSO crystals.

The human brain contains a wide array of billions of neurons and interconnections, which are often simplified for analysis using compartmentalized microfluidic devices for neuronal cell culturing, to better understand neuronal development and disease. However, such devices are traditionally incompatible for high-pressure freezing and high-resolution nanoscale imaging and analysis of their sub-cellular processes by methods including electron microscopy. Here we develop a novel compartmentalized neuronal co-culture platform allowing reconstruction of neuronal networks with high variable spatial control, which is uniquely compatible for high-pressure freezing.

Ptychographic hard X-ray computed tomography (PXCT) is a recent method allowing imaging with quantitative electron-density contrast. Here, we imaged, at cryogenic temperature and without sectioning, cellular and subcellular structures of a chemically fixed and stained wild-type mouse retina, including axons and synapses, with complete isotropic 3D information over tens of microns. Comparison with tomograms of degenerative retina from a mouse model of retinitis pigmentosa illustrates the potential of this method for analyzing disease processes like neurodegeneration at sub-200 nm resolution.
