Organoruthenium complexes are potent alternatives for platinum-based complexes because of their superior anticancer activity. In this investigation, a series of new Ru(II)-arene complexes with triarylamine-thiosemicarbazone hybrid ligands with higher anticancer activity than cisplatin are reported. The molecular structure of the ligands and complexes was confirmed spectroscopically and supported by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

Although low-molecular-weight (LMW) biothiols function as a disease indicator in plasma, rapidly and effectively analyzing them remains challenging in the extracellular oxidative environment due to technical difficulties. Here, we report a newly designed, affinity pulldown platform using a -derived organic hydroperoxide resistance regulatory (OhrR) protein and its operator dsDNA for rapid and cost-effective analyses of plasma LMW biothiols. In the presence of organic hydroperoxide, LMW biothiols triggered the rapid dissociation of FAM-labeled dsDNA from FLAG-tagged OhrR via S-thiolation of OhrR on anti-FLAG antibody-coated beads, which led to a strong increase of fluorescence intensity in the supernatant after pulldown.

Our aim was to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of CT (ie, high-intensity interval and resistance training) in Mapuche adults from Chile and in their peers of European descent. In total, 96 hyperglycemic adult women (mean age 46 years [95% confidence interval; 38, 53]) were divided in four groups: Mapuche CT (Map-CT, n = 14) or control group (Map-CG, n = 44), and European CT (Eur-CT, n = 14) or control group (Eur-CG, n = 23). The following endpoints were analyzed at baseline and after 12 weeks: anthropometric (body mass, body mass index, waist circumference), body composition (fat mass, muscle mass, lean mass), cardiovascular (systolic [SBP]/diastolic [DBP] blood pressure), metabolic (blood fasting glucose and total cholesterol), and muscle strength (handgrip of dominant/non-dominant arm).

NR4A2 is a nuclear receptor and a transcription factor, with distinctive physiological features. In the cell nuclei of the central nervous system, it is widely expressed and identified as a crucial regulator of dopaminergic (DA) neuronal differentiation, survival, and maintenance. Importantly, it has regulated different genes crucial for dopaminergic signals, and its expression has been diminished in both aged and PD post-mortem brains and reduced in PD patients.

Most organisms on Earth use glucose, a photosynthetic product, as energy source. The chloroplast, the home of photosynthesis, is the most representative and characteristic organelle in plants and is enclosed by the outer envelope and inner envelope membranes. The chloroplast biogenesis and unique functions are very closely associated with proteins in the two envelope membranes of the chloroplast.

We study a dynamic interplay between Hamiltonian mean-field oscillators and inertial Kuramoto oscillators. We present several sufficient frameworks leading to asymptotic complete synchronization for the mixed ensemble. For a two-oscillator system with the same natural frequencies, we prove that the mixed ensemble exhibits asymptotic complete synchronization for any initial data, whereas we also show that the two-oscillator system tends to asymptotic complete synchronization under an assumption on the uniform boundedness on the phase diameter.

Increases in the numbers of immunocompromised patients and the emergence of drug-resistance fungal pathogens have led to the need for new, safe, efficacious antifungal agents. In this study, we designed a histidine-lysine-lysine (HKK) motif and synthesized six HKK peptides with repetitions of the motif. These peptides showed length-dependent antifungal activity against drug-susceptible and drug-resistant fungal pathogens via membranolytic or non-membranolytic action.

The individual response to exercise training is of great interest with methods that have been proposed to measure this response reviewed in this paper. However, individual training response estimates may be biased by various sources of variability present in exercise studies, and in particular by within-subject variability. We propose the use of protocols that can separate trainability from within-subject variability.

A common null polymorphism (rs1815739; R577X) in the gene that codes for α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) has been related to different aspects of exercise performance. Individuals who are homozygous for the X allele are unable to express the α-actinin-3 protein in the muscle as opposed to those with the RX or RR genotype. α-actinin-3 deficiency in the muscle does not result in any disease.

The increasing emergence of drug-resistant bacteria creates a requirement for new antibiotics and various types of antibiotic materials such as proteins, peptides, polymers, and chemical compounds. Among these, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered to be promising antibiotic candidates for clinical treatments. In this study, we have designed a novel series of peptides with repeated sequences of minimum membrane-active motif, 'XWZX' basic sequence (X: lysine or arginine, Z: leucine, tyrosine, valine, or glycine), and an α-helical secondary structure.

The frequent rainfall during the low tide would erode and transport the surface sediment and microphytobenthos (MPB) in the intertidal flat. In order to quantify the rainfall effects on the erodibility of sediment and MPB at the salt marsh and mixed flat, a series of erosion experiments have been conducted with a Gust erosion microcosm system. Surface sediments were sampled for analyzing algal biomass (Chl-a) and primary production (PP) during three typical weather (without rain, rain, and post-rain) conditions.

Borrelidin is an inhibitor of threonyl-tRNA synthetase with both anticancer and antiangiogenic activities. Although borrelidin could be a potent drug that can treat metastatic cancer through synergistic therapeutic effects, its severe liver toxicity has limited the use for cancer therapeutics. In this study, we developed a liposomal formulation of borrelidin to treat metastatic breast cancer effectively through its combined anticancer and antiangiogenic effects while reducing the potential liver toxicity.
