Embryo size is a critical trait determining not only grain yield but also the nutrition of the maize kernel. Up to the present, only a few genes have been characterized affecting the maize embryo/kernel ratio. Here, we identify 63 genes significantly associated with maize embryo/kernel weight ratio using a genome-wide association study (GWAS).

This study provides a detailed picture of how a protein (lysozyme) complexes with a poly(acrylic acid) polyelectrolyte (PAA) in water at the atomic level using a combination of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. The effect of PAA and temperature on the protein's structure is explored. The simulations reveal that a lysozyme's structure is relatively stable except from local conformational changes induced by the presence of PAA and temperature increase.

Computational models have made significant progress in predicting the effect of protein variants. However, deciphering numerous variants of uncertain significance (VUS) located within intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) remains challenging. To address this issue, we introduce phase separation, which is tightly linked to IDRs, into the investigation of missense variants.

In this study, the distribution of eight phthalate esters (PAEs), namely (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP)) were examined across fifteen sampling stations in Yazd industrial Park. All the PAEs in dust deposited in the outdoor environment were analyzed using a Gas-mass chromatography (GC-MS/MS) device. Both probabilistic and deterministic approaches were utilized to assess the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks for adult occupational population groups.

Polymer nanocomposites have found ubiquitous use across diverse industries, attributable to their distinctive properties and enhanced mechanical performance compared to conventional materials. Elucidating the elastic-to-plastic transition in polymer nanocomposites under diverse mechanical loads is paramount for the bespoke design of materials with desired mechanical attributes. In the current work, the elastic-to-plastic transition is probed in model systems of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and silica, SiO, nanoparticles, through detailed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations.

Polymer nanocomposites are characterized by heterogeneous mechanical behavior and performance, which is mainly controlled by the interaction between the nanofiller and the polymer matrix. Optimizing their material performance in engineering applications requires understanding how both the temperature and strain rate of the applied deformation affect mechanical properties. This work investigates the effect of strain rate and temperature on the mechanical properties of poly(ethylene oxide)/silica (PEO/SiO) nanocomposites, revealing their behavior in both the melt and glassy states, via atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and continuum models.

The air pollution levels from polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (dl-PCBs) in three residential areas located north, west, and south of the Da Nang airport were determined by using passive air samplers containing polyurethane foam (PUF) discs with 3-month sampling intervals from 2017 to 2020. The total toxic equivalents (∑TEQs) of the PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, using WHO-TEFs, were highest north of the airport (134 to 10610 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day, with an average of 1108 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day). The ∑TEQs were lower west of the airport, between 159 and 381 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day and averaged 230 fg WHO-TEQ/PUF day.

Objectives: To assess the effects of the transparent online open procurement arrangement on the prices, volumes, and costs of medicines in Ningxia, China.
Methods: Data were extracted from the Ningxia pharmaceutical procurement platform, covering 16 months of purchase orders (December 2019 to March 2021) prior to the implementation of the transparent online open procurement policy and 20 months of purchase orders after the implementation of the policy (April 2021 to November 2022). Interrupted time series (ITS) analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of the transparent online open procurement policy on the prices, volumes, and total costs of the purchase orders.

Passive air samplers were used to monitor polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorobiphenyls (dl-PCBs) between 2020 and 2022 in four residential areas around Bien Hoa hot spot (BHS) including Trung Dung (TD), Tan Phong (TP), Quang Vinh (QV), and Buu Long (BL). The total toxic equivalents of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs (∑TEQs) were highest in the TD area, from 284 to 642 fg TEQ/PUF day. Next was the QV area, where ∑TEQs ranged from 229 to 569 fg TEQ/PUF day.

In order to study the tensile properties of rock-concrete composite disc specimens with different roughness, the surface of the gray-white sand specimen was artificially grooved, and six different roughness were configured. The test results show that the roughness size and roughness mode jointly control the tensile strength of the rock-concrete interface. With the increase of roughness, the tensile strength of the sample changes from the initial decrease to the increase and then decrease, and the tensile strength reaches the highest when the roughness is f3.

Wetlands provide resources, regulate the environment, and stabilize shorelines; however, they are among the most vulnerable ecosystems in the world. The classification of mangrove species allows the determination of the habitat of each species, thereby serving as a basis for determining protection solutions and planning plans for mangrove conservation and restoration according to each environmental condition. We used Phantom 4 multispectral unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect data from wetland areas in the Dong Rui Commune, which is one of the most diverse and valuable wetland ecosystems in northern Vietnam.

Due to industrialization, soil heavy metal pollution is a growing concern, with humic substances (HS) playing a pivotal role in soil passivation. To address the long duration of the compost humification problem, coal fly ash (CFA) in situ catalyzes the rapid pyrolysis of the cotton stalk (CS) to produce HS to address Cd passivation. Results indicate that the highest yield of humic acid (HA) (8.

Background: A dramatic increase in fetal situs inversus diagnoses by ultrasound in the months following the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) surge of December 2022 in China led us to investigate whether maternal SARS-CoV-2 exposure could be associated with elevated risk of fetal situs inversus.
Methods: In this multi-institutional, hospital-based, matched case-control study, we investigated pregnant women who underwent ultrasonographic fetal biometric assessment at gestational weeks 20-24 at our hospitals. Each pregnant woman carrying a situs inversus fetus was randomly matched with four controls based on the date of confinement.

Large gas bubbles can reach the surface of pools of mud and lava where they burst, often through the formation and expansion of circular holes. Bursting bubbles release volatiles and generate spatter, and hence play a key role in volcanic degassing and volcanic edifice construction. Here, we study the ascent and rupture of bubbles using a combination of field observations at Pâclele Mici (Romania), laboratory experiments with mud from the Imperial Valley (California, USA), numerical simulations and theoretical models.
