Unlabelled: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a complex chronic liver disorder. Examination of parental pregnancy-related characteristics may provide insights into the origins of risk of NAFLD in offspring. We examined relationships between parental pregnancy-related characteristics and NAFLD in 1,170 adolescent offspring aged 17 years participating in the Western Australian Pregnancy (Raine) Cohort Study.

Introduction: The current Australian National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) involves biennial, cytology-based screening of women from the age of 18 years. From December, 2017 this will change to a five-yearly human papilloma virus-based screening commencing at age 25. There is some concern that the new program may delay the opportunistic detection of cervical cancers in women under 25 years.

Background: Neurological deficits noted immediately after childbirth are usually various obstetric neuropathies, but prospective studies are limited. The main study aim was to quantify and describe immediate postpartum neurological deficits of the lower extremity, including the buttocks.
Methods: A prospective observational study of postpartum women delivering in a single maternity hospital during three months of 2016.

Background: Season and vitamin D are indirect and direct correlates of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and are associated with pregnancy outcomes. Further to producing vitamin D, UV has positive effects on cardiovascular and immune health that may support a role for UV directly benefitting pregnancy.
Objectives: To investigate the effects of UV exposure on pregnancy; specifically fetal growth, preterm birth and hypertensive complications.

Prophylactic vasopressor administration is commonly recommended to reduce maternal hypotension during spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section. Metaraminol has undergone limited investigation in obstetric anaesthesia for this purpose, particularly in comparison with phenylephrine. In this multicentre, randomised, double-blind, non-inferiority study, we compared prophylactic phenylephrine or metaraminol infusions, started immediately after spinal anaesthesia, in 185 women who underwent elective caesarean section.

Background And Aims: Assessment of adiposity using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been considered more advantageous in comparison to anthropometry for predicting cardio-metabolic risk in the older population, by virtue of its ability to distinguish total and regional fat. Nonetheless, there is increasing uncertainty regarding the relative superiority of DXA and little comparative data exist in young adults. This study aimed to identify which measure of adiposity determined by either DXA or anthropometry is optimal within a range of cardio-metabolic risk factors in young adults.

Across the Western World there is an increasing trend to postpone childbearing. Consequently, the negative influence of age on oocyte quality may lead to a difficulty in conceiving for many couples. Furthermore, lifestyle factors may exacerbate a couple's difficulty in conceiving due mainly to the metabolic influence of obesity; however, the negative impacts of low peripheral body fat, excessive exercise, the increasing prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, and smoking all have significant negative effects on fertility.

Objective: The objective was to determine the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on live-delivery rates in women who had previously undergone tubal sterilization.
Study Design: We examined first IVF live deliveries for women aged 20-44 years at their first embryo transfer (ET) with history of hospital admission for tubal sterilization in Western Australia (WA). The ET cycles (n=178) were ascertained over the period of 1996 to 2010 using WA hospital records.

Aims: To perform a population-based review of monomorphic endometrial stromal tumours and their histological mimics presenting over a 20-year period, including an evaluation of fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) for the JAZF1 and YWHAE breakaparts.
Methods And Results: Forty-nine tumours were examined, comprising 13 histological mimics and 36 endometrial stromal tumours [six stromal nodules (ESNs), 25 low-grade stromal sarcomas (ESSs), and five monomorphic undifferentiated sarcomas (mUESs)]. Nine ESSs showed variant histological patterns, including smooth muscle, sex cord-like/glandular, fibrous or rhabdoid differentiation.

Background: Intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure may affect neonatal outcome by altering fetal lung and immune system development. We hypothesized that intra-amniotic LPS exposure would cause persistent fetal pulmonary responses as the lungs develop in utero.
Methods: Fetal lambs were exposed to intra-amniotic LPS at 118 or at 118 and 123 d of gestational age (GA) with delivery at 125, 133, or 140 d (term = 147 d).

The effects of lung volume recruitment manouvres on pulmonary blood flow (PBF) during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) in preterm neonates are unknown. Since increased airway pressure adversely affects PBF, we compared the effects of two HFOV recruitment strategies on PBF and oxygenation index (OI). Preterm lambs (128+/-1 day gestation; term approximately 150 days) were anesthetized and ventilated using HFOV (10 Hz, 33% tI) with a mean airway pressure (Pao) of 15 cmH2O.

Background: Endometriomata are endometriotic deposits within the ovary. The surgical management of these blood filled cysts is controversial. The laparoscopic approach to the management of endometriomata is favoured over a laparotomy approach as it offers the advantage of a shorter hospital stay, faster patient recovery and decreased hospital costs.

Increasing numbers of women are requesting non-hormonal treatments for menopausal symptoms. Estrogen-containing HRT is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms in healthy women but is contraindicated for some women and avoided by many others. This review will assess the evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of non-hormonal treatments for menopausal symptoms.

Increasing numbers of women have menopausal symptoms after treatment for breast cancer. These symptoms can result directly from cancer treatments (such as oophorectomy, ovarian suppression, chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure, and antioestrogens), as a spontaneous event, or after discontinuation of hormone-replacement therapy. The onset of menopausal symptoms after treatment for breast cancer can have a long-lasting effect on quality of life, body image, sexual function, and self esteem.
