Purpose: Blackberries are rich in polyphenols and are a human health food continuously consumed to improve health and reduce diseases caused by aging. Herein, we evaluated the effects of daily blackberry administration before and after transient cerebral ischemia in gerbils.
Methods: Blackberry extract (BBE) was orally administered twice a day for two weeks to protect against ischemic events during continuous administration.
Purpose: Amid rising health awareness, natural products which has milder effects than medical drugs are becoming popular. However, only few systems can quantitatively assess their impact on living organisms. Therefore, we developed a deep-learning system to automate the counting of cells in a gerbil model, aiming to assess a natural product's effectiveness against ischemia.

Immune checkpoint blockade has led to breakthroughs in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. However, the prominent heterogeneity in gastric cancer, notably the heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment, highlights the idea that the antitumor response is a reflection of multifactorial interactions. Through transcriptomic analysis and dynamic plasma sample analysis, we identified a metabolic "face-off" mechanism within the tumor microenvironment, as shown by the dual prognostic significance of nicotinamide metabolism.

Purpose: To develop a new 4/6 infarct nephrectomy (INx) model rat mimicking moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to evaluate its application.
Methods: We modified the conventional 5/6 INx rat model to create the 4/6 INx model by ligating the renal artery branch to induce infarction of one-third of the left kidney after right kidney removal and compared biochemically and histologically both models. To demonstrate the application of the 4/6 INx model, the effects of a supplementary compound containing calcium carbonate, chitosan, palm shell activated charcoal etc.

Congenital tremor (CT) in piglets was first reported in 1922, and although the causative pathogen was unknown for many years, atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) was recently shown to be the cause. APPV is difficult to isolate, and there have been few reports of APPV isolated from field materials. Here, we successfully isolated infectious particles from a tonsillar emulsion from a CT-affected piglet using the established swine-kidney-derived cell line SK-L.

The aim of this study was to construct a new dual-flow perfusion system in rat model and optimized the oxygen supply to ensure the aerobic metabolization.
Methods: The dual-flow circuit was fabricated using rat liver and whole blood samples as perfusates.

Understanding internal and external loading in exercise is important for safe rehabilitation. The physiological parameters of dogs have been studied in swimming, but those of dogs walking on an underwater treadmill have not been documented. In this study, four healthy beagle dogs were examined for changes in physiological parameters before and after walking in water for 20 min at a speed of 4 km/h with the water level set at the height of the hip joint as an external load.

Wild Japanese monkeys () were exposed to radiation after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in 2011. To clarify the biological effects of radiation exposure on their fetal growth, pregnant monkeys and their fetuses were analyzed. The Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi) is found only on the two islands of Amami-Ōshima and Tokunoshima in southwest Japan. It has a primitive appearance and ecology, is an evolutionarily valuable animal and has been assigned to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. We describe a case with mild purulent wounds on the distal digital skin of both forelimbs and multiple nodular lesions in various organs, including the heart and kidney.

Classical swine fever (CSF) live vaccine used in Japan, GPE strain, is produced using guinea pig kidney (GPK)-derived primary culture cells. This means that a large number of guinea pigs are used to generate the primary GPK cells needed to produce the CSF live vaccine, and alternative solution is desired. Hence, we established two GPK cell lines capable of culturing the GPE strain: spontaneously immortalized GPK (GPK-SI) cells were generated by repeated passaging of primary GPK cells, and the other cell line, artificially immortalized GPK (GPK-AI) cells, were obtained by introducing the SV40 large T antigen gene into primary GPK cells.

Intraperitoneal administration of hydrogen (H2)-containing saline inhibited neuronal cell death in ischemic stroke in a number of animal models, but it is unknown whether H2 is absorbed from the abdominal cavity into the blood and reaches the brain. In this study, we investigated whether intraperitoneal administration of saline containing H2 inhibits neuronal cell death caused by cerebral ischemia and measured the concentration of H2 in the carotid artery and inferior vena cava (IVC). Gerbils were subjected to transient unilateral cerebral ischemia twice, and saline or H2-rich saline was administered intraperitoneally three or seven times every 12 hours.

Unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs) induce inflammatory cytokines and type I interferons (IFNs) to activate the immune system. To apply CpG ODNs as vaccine adjuvants, the cellular uptake and stability of phosphodiester-based, non-modified ODNs require further improvement. Previously developed new CpG ODNs forming guanine-quadruplex (G4) structures showed higher nuclease resistance and cellular uptake than linear CpG ODNs; however, the complex formation of G4-CpG ODNs with antigen proteins is necessary for their application as vaccine adjuvants.

Prevention of hypothermia induced by anesthesia and enhanced by low environmental temperatures is difficult in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in dogs as forced warming devices, including magnetic materials, are not acceptable for use in the MRI room. A hot water bottle (HWB) can be carried into an MRI examination room and can contribute to the prevention or attenuation of hypothermia. Here, we retrospectively investigated the effects of HWB on body temperature during MRI examinations in dogs under general anesthesia (GA).
