Insulin-like peptide 3 (INSL3) is a constitutive product of mature, adult-type Leydig cells of the testes and consequently in most mammals is an ideal biomarker with which to monitor pubertal development. A new heterologous time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay was developed and validated to measure circulating INSL3 in the blood of adult male dogs. Compared to other species, INSL3 concentration is low with marked variation between individuals, which appears to be independent of breed, age, or weight.

Nephropathis epidemica (NE), a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), is an acute zoonotic disease endemic in the Republic of Tatarstan. B-mode ultrasound is routinely performed to evaluate the prostate gland in neutered dogs, although, the detection of malignancies may be challenging. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has shown to be useful for the assessment of prostatic perfusion in normal and diseased dogs, although the interpretation of contrast ultrasonographic features may still be subjective. A quantitative tool for evaluating prostatic perfusion might improve the reliability of the results in terms of early detection of prostate neoplasia in neutered dogs.

Spillover of SARS-CoV-2 into a variety of wild and domestic animals has been an ongoing feature of the human pandemic. The establishment of a new reservoir in white-tailed deer in North America and increasing divergence of the viruses circulating in them from those circulating in the human population has highlighted the ongoing risk this poses for global health. Background: Quality control material (QCM) for hematology in veterinary laboratories is limited, and repeat patient testing quality control (RPT-QC) is an alternative method using excess matrix-specific samples.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine if median differences between RPT-QC analyses for each time interval for RBC, HGB, HCT, and WBC were the same, determine if unified RPT-QC limits can be applied to a network of veterinary laboratories, compare the performance of RPT-QC to commercial QCM for the reference analyzer and evaluate the experience over a 4 month period and design, improve and implement an automated spreadsheet for RPT-QC data management.

Methods: The potential to unify individual analyzer RPT-QC limits for red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin (HGB), and white blood cells (WBC) on multi-site Sysmex XT-2000-iV analyzers was explored by a difference of means test and confidence interval determination for the median difference for each network analyzer in comparison to the network reference analyzer.

Fractures caused by bone overloading are a leading cause of euthanasia in Thoroughbred racehorses. The risk of fatal fracture has been shown to be influenced by both environmental and genetic factors but, to date, no specific genetic mechanisms underpinning fractures have been identified.
